  • Constantine I, or Constantine the Great, was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity, changing the history of the world. The emperor that renamed the city of Byzantium to Constantinople and made it the capital of the empire, a capital that lasted for over a thousand years.

Constantine I the Great is one of those hinge characters in history, one who cannot be ignored, either for his military and administrative achievements or his radical change in imperial policy, as well as being one of the last effective reunifiers of the already dying roman empire (if it is understood from the beginning of its increasing decentralization and loss of material capacity), without forgetting that, if it were not for him, perhaps Christianity would not be what it has become today, for better or for worse .
And although we loved your video of Aureliano (a character for whom we have great affection in the Temple) for his similar achievements, he has a huge sense of the greatness that this character had, as well as how impressive he was in the scheme historical.

The energy that drives civilization was fading since the late republic. That is to say that Rome's territorial economic or military's might was peaked in the late republic IS wrong. He is greatly overrated, even his title of "the great" seems too much for a man who achieved so little. His reforms were a continuation of Diocletian's ones (specially in the military), and his reunification of the Empire can't be compared to Aurelian's, everything he do could've been achieved by anyother usurper, like Maxentius.
He's just over-praised by ancient, medieval and modern christian historians for making christianity the official religion, and that after ignoring Constantine was a pagan for most of his own life, even he depicted himself in statues as Sol Invictus during his "christian era".
Thanks to his religious reforms, another usurper like him, Theodosius, banned all other religions based on christianity's intolerance, which gave the Empire lots of social uprisings, the death and censorship of many philosophers and artists and a turbulent political climate that Theo's own sons couldn't handle without great costs.
Aswell as establishing 2 powerful churches who would be atrocious for Europe for centuries to come

@@bobross9581 Alurian? You mean Aurelian? Lmao, Constantine took up the mantle of Diocletian in any case (specially the military reforms), Aurelian was long dead by then.
Again, you are overestimating him, he was an usurper like the other 900 wannabe emperors, he founded a fortified city in a well stablished trade route, so what? He didn't make Constantinople the way it eventually was going to be, he didn't build the Theodosian Walls, nor the Walls of Blachernae, Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire is the end result of centuries of good and bad emperors.
Explain to me how different would've been if the Empire was reunified by somebody like Maxentius.
The mass spread of christianity actually destroyed lots of ancient knowledge, buildings and even people. It was a huge regression in tech, philosophy, science, etc. that cost Europe various centuries of "darkness". Advancement is the church burning books and the Inquisition torturing "heretics" who were nothing more than other christians of gnostic or just slightly different beliefs, oh, what a beacon of civilization!
Europeans could only achieve a real progress after the Renaissance, when Byzantine scholars shared the pagan knowledge and Westerners rejected the Church and started the Age of Enlightenment. Even then the christians managed to start killing each other once more, with the Reformation wars, truly a religion of love and peace.
Christian barbarians are no better than the muslims, and we don't even know if Constantine was really a christian, he surely used them for political reasons but he kept being represented till his very end, in statues and coins as an avatar of Sol Invictus. It wasn't till Theodosius that true christians ruled the Empire, and Theodosious himself prove it by banning all other religions and sending the christian mobs to destroy or sack pagan temples and houses

Constantine was the purest incarnation of Chad energy ever known to mankind since big J. and his disciples.
