They've made it so ENGAGING while still being deeply IMPACTFUL. Sure, Surface Slap was an impactful ability, no pun on "slap/impact" intended, but it was more of the implication rather than the actual usage. It got kinda rote. Show up, slap the best slap target, set it and forget it. But Dawntrail FSH has brought us stuff that has us following flowcharts of "did the Lure proc the guaranteed message?" type stuff. And they have new animations, sound effects, messages... It's just so FUN to fish.
I love that there's unique text when intuition refreshes. I was hype when I got it for the first time on charibenet and "the reek intensifies" popped up.
For fishing hotbar space, I plan to create two different gearsets. One for normal fishing and one for spearfishing. Which helped me a lot with my hotbar space issues. Edit: So tried this, and doesn't work the way I had expected sadly. Hotbar's are apparently tied to the job you are on and not a specific gearset. I still made it work by using some copy hotbar macro magic, but not as easy as initially expected.
I use a hotbar switcher macro which gives me a lot more hotbar space for fishing and spear fishing. One macro switches to hotbar 4, and the other macro switches back to hotbar 1.
There are /hotbar commands that you could set up in a macro, and could have two (likely more actually) macro buttons that instantly place actions onto your hotbar. I'm gonna tinker around with that tonight probably.
I kind of want multiple macros. One is "basic" fisher. It has buttons that swap to either spear, or fish mode. Those two have buttons that change back to basic. Figure I don't mind using 4 macros and 7 hotbars.

Given the lack of hotbar space, which actions would you say are a must-have on your hotbar for 100 FSH as of now? Was very interesting to hear your thoughts on DT fishing updates, in any case; as always, I appreciate everything you do to make fishing content more accessible in FF14 (even for not-so-hardcore fishers like me)! It's nice to hear that it seems to be a good, well thought-out update so far/that the updates seem to be being positively received by the fishing community.

I really want a fishing expert to attend a yoshi P Q&A or media tour one day. I need someone to beg the developers to standardize language used in fishing tooltips. Ambitious lure says large fish when they really mean powerful biting fish (maybe its a mistranslation from large mouth?) and the only reason i suspected it meant powerful biting was because the coloring matched powerful hookset. This is a ridiculous thing to ask of the players to find out. Half of the tooltips make little to no sense and a quarter of them misuse the word large. We need fisher representation to fix these attrocities and make fishing more intuitive

The only hints that it works on Powerful fish is that it says "can also be used with fish caught using Powerful Hookset" but that part of it seems to be its primary usage? Especially the part of it that says it guarantees a "large-sized fish" which is definitely talking about Powerful fish, not formerly-HQ fish. (I don't even know why I'd want to guarantee a non-HQ fish, ever) The message that pops up saying the "next cast" (which isn't the next cast, but the next *hook*) will land a "large-sized fish", does not guarantee me a moochable formerly-HQ fish, and doesn't seem to interact with that system at all. I really wish they would come up with new terminology for one or the other.
In 3 windows of trying to catchy Ruby Dragon, I got more casts off with a mooched Ku'er in those three windows than the previous 20+ combined. And I caught it in the third so the ratio coulda been worse. Spareful hand is the single most broken ability on any class ever. If a fish is caught via mooching, the catch is free. You get it. Prep your three, hold your fourth and your golden. Now fish like Seth and Ruby and The great serpent of Ronka will no longer be giant pains in the ass.
And lets not forget about Sidreal whale. Storing three horizon events is huge. And the new int extension trait should result in more casts at it per window. Still very new to fishing, as I literally only grabbed it for the first Mogpendium, and reached level 58 just from all the Ocean Fishing I had to do to get the mogpendium requirement lol Only recently got to properly using it in tandem with leveling all my DoL/H jobs. Been slow but I am mostly enjoying the process. It is really interesting hearing about the depth behind things that I am fresh to. I don't know how deep into it I'm gonna go, as I'm primarily motivated by story content (society/role quests, custom deliveries, etc). But it is still fun to get a feel for how everything works. My partner and I have been working on the Feast of Famine/Nepto Dragon sidequest in ARR occasionally. It takes me a bit longer to catch stuff but so far I'm at 2 of the preliminary fish. I'm curious to see how the rest goes!
@@TheKeyblader133 that is a fun thing about fishing. You can go as deep as you want for your enjoyment. Don't need to go hella deep to have, just make it fun on your own.
Took a fishing break after failing to get Ruby Dragon so many times. Looking forward to your new guide for it with the new skills so I can get back into it again!
You can even reroll it into a fish that bite window might've already had passed too! So, for example, Steel Razor bites at exactly 7s, if you didn't get a bite, you can use Lure to reroll and potentially get it to bite based on the weighted pool that the lure would bring.
I know how lures work and that they work but it still feels a bit like a "huff copium"-ability. [Spend 10GP to definitely get the big fish bite, promise!]
I literally used fish eyes/spareful hand to get greater serpent yesterday...I'd love to see if you can get the 3 priests before you go amiss, that'd be a real feat (I was only able to get 1 with the full hour)
Spareful Hand is a neat mechanic and I like the new strats it enables, but I'm a little wary of how long it'll make prep times on some fish. I suppose in a lot of cases you'll get the extra fish while you're stacking up AA anyways, but rarer catches are going to need a much earlier start to guarantee. I'd usually rather have to go for multiple attempts but spend more time fishing in the actual window than do that much pre-fishing and get it in fewer tries. I'm also a bit sad about Rest killing the Patience trick for Fork/Salad (maybe some others?) I kind of enjoy getting screwed over by accidental catches sometimes, it makes things a little spicier. Maybe I just have a latent gambling addiction. In any case, good video thank you Fruity 👍
I agree! (and totally didn't talk about it yet) about how mooch prep has the potential to get real long. I think the distinction will need to be made though that this prep for a lot of fish probably won't be necessary (like with how we treat AA stacks), but we'll see as testing happens. I know for a fact for Xenacanthus I'll probably have 2 options for prep now lol.
I started getting into fishing as a meme with some friends. Then I found out about Big Fish about six months ago, and started watching Fruity's guides. Now I'm finding myself watching over an hour long video talking about fishing in FFXIV. How deep does this rabbit hole go.
Does anybody have a macro that I could use that would switch me between two sets of fishing bars, one with fishing, and one with spearfishing? Only way I can fit all this now.
Cinder would require precision hookset, whereas Hornhelm is powerful. Ambitious Lure would do literally nothing positive for Cinder, because you'd have to use Modest Lure.... and Modest Lure would affect not just Cinder Surprise, but also Sand Egg, Crab, Dustfish...
@@FruitySnacks Oh I mistakenly assumed cinder was powerful. But as a follow-up, you're not saying that cinder/certain legendary fish are excluded from the effect of the new lures its just that they arent useful due to their particular pool?
@@kiyokiyoko ALure/MLure will affect ALL FISH. But how effective using them _with_ that fish is either up in the air or not likely useful. There's plenty of Precision fish with Cinders Pool so based on what we know, it's unlikely that it'll be useful.
@@FruitySnacks Ah ok I just mistook modest not helping as a hard coded interaction like fish eyes not working on arr legendaries. ty for your clarification and thank you for the great videos :)
All 6 HW legendaries are Intuition fish, and half of them are mooched from fish required to trigger the intuition. And having spareful hand for 3 free mooches, absolutely legendaries will be easier.
(At the time of this comment) We're still determining which ones are best and which to recommend. For now, the Fleeting Brand and Kitefin Shark farms are fine.
Feels like possibly you can weed out certain fish with the correct usage of modest/amb lures. Does using the lure refill the fish of its already compatible with the given hook set? I wonder
I have done my best to avoid as many zone spoilers as I can. I do not talk about or name the final zone. I do not talk about MSQ or anything. So it should be relatively spoiler free, but that will depend on what you consider 'a spoiler.'
I wonder if this will make furcacauda easier to catch by slapping isle skipper, since its the only other small sized fish you can catch on the bait? I might have to play around with it some, although the iribainion hook rate is still quite high relative so we will see. I DO wonder if the big game fishing is going to play into the big fish of dawntrail at all, although I have no idea how that would even work. Maybe they will be adding a new buff in future patches? I cant really see why they would add it JUST for size hunters (not that its a bad thing, but they had to have had an actual mechanics reason for it) Or am I dumb, and is big game fishing just a GP storage via anglers art for prize catch (as in does it just make it a large size fish?) I mean if so cool but not really what I would have wanted from it haha. edited, got to the part of the video where you talked about big game fishing making the massive aethersand drop lol. Interesting, very interesting. How does one get in that fisher discord btw, ive tried finding fisher discords before but i swear they are more hidden than cinder surprise.
There is testing underway to see how the impact is on Fork, yes. That is a strategy that is being tested -- it may not work on Salad though. As for Big-game fishing, it's for size hunters insofar that it CAN be used for max-size fish for records AND can be used for collectables to push the higher tiers -- sometimes it's even needed to hit a T3 collectable (if your gear is low and past a certain perception breakpoint). It pushes a fish to its top 1% size range (or so we know right now) if you hit a certain threshold of perception. I think I mentioned collectables as a future ramble topic and this is part of why I want to dedicate time to just it. It only works *with* large sized fish, so you have to use PC, P2 or hope for a 'natural' large-sized fish for it to trigger (but it doesn't fall off if you catch a non large sized, fwiw). It's an interesting skill and they COULD make it so you need to use BGF to force a large-sized (moochable) fish, but right now we are not seeing that behaviour.
as much as this sounds interesting to deep dive in to (perhaps literally), what actually is the purpose or the rewards of obtaining these fish? outside of simply having caught them?
Many fish are used in crafting, Leves, GC turn ins. Some desynth into things (ARR and a few SB ones, at least). Beyond that, it's achievements for minions, titles, new glam rods, etc... and yea, just log completion.
There isnt that much money to be made in fishing. there is some, yes, but not much. its a niche market of people who want fish tank fish and/or when a tiers food uses a seafood (like the jhinga shrimp in endwalker) Most of us are insane people who are achievement hunting/love fish irl/just crazy. There are some really good resources for fishing for big fish especially but honestly just get lvld up first and start playing with it. Just have fun :)
There *can* be money in fishing, but it's way harder to explain or 'teach' than others and is usually very slow. Expansion/Patch Launches do really well because there are a lot of fishing related things people just don't want to get. They eventually crash in price, but do exist.
For sure - Spareful Hand helps with the 3 Ku'er pocket. Unsure on if ALure will help with *getting* Ku'er. Beyond that, you still have to get Ruby to bite.
I thought about it! But at this point in time, I don't really have that much footage, or it's messy, or it's not going to be about what I'm talking about. On top of that all, to do that would require way more time than I am able to commit at this point. For these, you're really just meant to listen for now. The specific stuff I talk about will get videos, when I can properly record and structure them in a way that isn't just part of a ramble.
Fishing was always kind of boring to me so I never fully got into it, and most of the mechanics are somewhat confusing to me. This is the first expansion I am playing from start and I want to give FSH a proper try. Would it be possible to get some nice in-depth tutorial for both fishing and spearfishing in Dawntrail for someone new/semi-new? Especially that when I tried farming for the spearfishing iqrrax crab, I found it very hard to get one and if I do, it's not of decent collectability and even with using HQ Cordial I need to wait a lot
Those tutorials already exists just search youtube. This guy isn't going to make one, he just spend over an hour talking about minute details without any editing whatsoever. He ain't gonna make a tutorial.
I will get around to doing a tutorial on that crab, but it's not my highest priority. If you check my channel, I do have starter guides on fishing (in general), ocean fishing, and Spearfishing that you can use, along with fish specific guides. With DT being so new and there being so much going on with it, I'm a smidgen behind on what guides I wanted to make, but eventually I'll have all the important ones out. As DieKao pointed out (weirdly) there are other guides online, so if I don't have one yet, there may be one else where that could work.
You keep mentioning not having enough space for all the skills so I'll assume you're using a controller. Setup correctly there's more than extra slots available on a controller setup. I could make a video response to this showing you how to have ever skill available and still have extra bar space for skills.
I use keyboard and mouse and I have plenty of space once I rearranged other things - like food, cordials, and shortcuts. that's more for those who don't have enough space.
@@FubukiShiromiya ok! Sorry you didn't like your time with the video! If you'd like to skip ahead to where I start talking about the change, that starts at ~ 2:03
I've never thought fishing is boring. I do think it's a massive RNG timesink made for people who have no life outside of the game. Having weather AND time requirements means sometimes waiting weeks just for the chance to get certain fish and that's put me off entirely.
The consolation is that you don't have to sit by the pool that entire time Just set a phone alarm or calendar notification, show up 10-15 minutes prior for Angler's Art/Swimbait prep, and try your hand at the slot machine If you get it, cool, you never have to worry about that one again; the biggest saving grace of the legendary fish system is that they aren't used for crafting materials or anything, so it's literally just one and done for log completion If you don't get it, set another alarm for the next one And in between, go about the rest of the game doing whatever you'd like I picked up legendary fishing on a whim during EW, and filled out my entire log in about five or six months, then got the EW title within two weeks of 6.55's release It's hard to breach into the scene, but once you do and you learn the ins and outs of the system, it honestly gets really fun to try and manipulate the RNG in your favor And then everything added with Dawntrail just adds so many layers to what you can pull off
@@Dendrago0 I physically do not have the time to get into it. I work shifts that change every week so there's no consistent time for me to be at home for this. It could be years before I see some of these fish.
@@FruitySnacks Got my FSH to lvl 100. Spend a day doing stuff like Titanic Sawfish, then went for Feast of Famine Fish and started doing the fishing holes in Western La Noscea. I think I get it now. Being able to prepare swimtbaits before windows came up is already very nice. Cancelling with Rest saves like a second or two which is nice. But then the lvl 100 Lures are going to be huge IF I can find a good site that lists the hooks properly. ff14angler is ok to check which baits I need, but otherwise it's useless.
@@TKing95 however deep you want it to go
Does anybody have a macro that I could use that would switch me between two sets of fishing bars, one with fishing, and one with spearfishing? Only way I can fit all this now.
You briefly mentioned "modest won't work on cinder" but just to clarify, it's not worth using ambitious lures for cinder with a hornhjelm slap?
Wonder if this will make some legendaries easier to catch with these updates
Drep's so far easier.
All 6 HW legendaries are Intuition fish, and half of them are mooched from fish required to trigger the intuition. And having spareful hand for 3 free mooches, absolutely legendaries will be easier.
Are you gonna be making a purple scrip farm? :3
(At the time of this comment) We're still determining which ones are best and which to recommend. For now, the Fleeting Brand and Kitefin Shark farms are fine.
@@FruitySnacks thanks, looking forward to it!
Feels like possibly you can weed out certain fish with the correct usage of modest/amb lures.
Does using the lure refill the fish of its already compatible with the given hook set? I wonder
What do you mean by "Does using the lure refill the fish of its already compatible with the given hook set?"
Jesus christ a 1 hour 15 minute video on fishing of all things. Who would watch this? *clicks video*
This is the abbreviated version as well!
is this spoiler safe if i havent finished msq yet?
I have done my best to avoid as many zone spoilers as I can. I do not talk about or name the final zone. I do not talk about MSQ or anything.
So it should be relatively spoiler free, but that will depend on what you consider 'a spoiler.'
@@FruitySnacks it was fine! 🙏
@@FruitySnacks great, thank you! i look forward to diving in to your channel to learn more :D
I just started fishing and its already way too much and I'm not even sure why I'm doing it because every fish sells for like 10 Gil 😭
There isnt that much money to be made in fishing. there is some, yes, but not much. its a niche market of people who want fish tank fish and/or when a tiers food uses a seafood (like the jhinga shrimp in endwalker)
Most of us are insane people who are achievement hunting/love fish irl/just crazy.
They eventually crash in price, but do exist.
fruity snacks do any of the new things make ruby dragon easier or just the ability to pocket 3 kuers before the window
For sure - Spareful Hand helps with the 3 Ku'er pocket.
Unsure on if ALure will help with *getting* Ku'er.
Beyond that, you still have to get Ruby to bite.
Bro love the content but put you fishing in the background as stock footage or put you catching these fish up
I thought about it!
Do you know what channel this is, lol?
I will get around to doing a tutorial on that crab, but it's not my highest priority. If you check my channel, I do have starter guides on fishing (in general), ocean fishing, and Spearfishing that you can use, along with fish specific guides.
With DT being so new and there being so much going on with it, I'm a smidgen behind on what guides I wanted to make, but eventually I'll have all the important ones out. As DieKao pointed out (weirdly) there are other guides online, so if I don't have one yet, there may be one else where that could work.
@@DieKao Oh no the guy who is literally a community featured creator by SE for fishing talks about fishing
Fishing will never make sense to me as long as we have large fish large sized fish and big fish all referring to different things
if it helps it's a bit better in other languages?
Man I gave you two minutes to get to some of the actual changes and I’m sorry that’s just all the patience I have
@@FubukiShiromiya well, Patience II has a longer duration, you should try that.
@@FruitySnacks or perhaps you could learn to take feedback and respect your audience’s time. Make content that is worth it, not this rambling mess.
@@FruitySnacks I tried to tell you respectfully and you responded with snark so now you get it straight.
@@FubukiShiromiya ok! Sorry you didn't like your time with the video!
If you'd like to skip ahead to where I start talking about the change, that starts at ~ 2:03
@@FruitySnacks thank you, I appreciate it. I’ll give it another go later on. I’d absolutely like to learn more about the fishing changes.
75 minutes wasted to just find out that getting rare fish is still fucking annoying
I've never thought fishing is boring.
I do think it's a massive RNG timesink made for people who have no life outside of the game.
Having weather AND time requirements means sometimes waiting weeks just for the chance to get certain fish and that's put me off entirely.
The consolation is that you don't have to sit by the pool that entire time
Just set a phone alarm or calendar notification, show up 10-15 minutes prior for Angler's Art/Swimbait prep, and try your hand at the slot machine
If you get it, cool, you never have to worry about that one again; the biggest saving grace of the legendary fish system is that they aren't used for crafting materials or anything, so it's literally just one and done for log completion
If you don't get it, set another alarm for the next one
And in between, go about the rest of the game doing whatever you'd like
I picked up legendary fishing on a whim during EW, and filled out my entire log in about five or six months, then got the EW title within two weeks of 6.55's release
It's hard to breach into the scene, but once you do and you learn the ins and outs of the system, it honestly gets really fun to try and manipulate the RNG in your favor
And then everything added with Dawntrail just adds so many layers to what you can pull off
@@Dendrago0 I physically do not have the time to get into it. I work shifts that change every week so there's no consistent time for me to be at home for this. It could be years before I see some of these fish.
Damn, I'm not autistic enough to get anything from this video. I'm just gonna read the skills and watch a 5 mins explanation.
I will have those eventually
@@FruitySnacks Got my FSH to lvl 100. Spend a day doing stuff like Titanic Sawfish, then went for Feast of Famine Fish and started doing the fishing holes in Western La Noscea.
I think I get it now. Being able to prepare swimtbaits before windows came up is already very nice. Cancelling with Rest saves like a second or two which is nice. But then the lvl 100 Lures are going to be huge IF I can find a good site that lists the hooks properly. ff14angler is ok to check which baits I need, but otherwise it's useless. FF14Fish Tracker is good for the big fish and seeing what you need.
But exploiting fishing holes with the different lure skills isn't possible at the moment unless I find a good ressource. This has always been my main issue with fishing in this game as well.
