Normally each hair is in a different phase so when you loose them it's just a few hair. Postpartum hair loss is all the hair that would have fallen out of pregnancy
I just went through this and it wasn't because of pregnancy. This is called telogen effluvium and can have many causes. Stresses on the body. I had forgotten about it and really thought I was going bald
Some people do go bald from telogen effluvium or w/e, it’s not always temporary, and there are like half a dozen different kinds or so. There’s also multiple types of Alopecia. Several hundred autoimmune conditions also cause random, diffuse, patchy, or chronic hair loss. I’ve been thinning for 20+ years.
This is not just for postpartum, but for any traumatic event that induces stress on the body. It's common after illness or impact as well. This is why many people experienced "covid hair"
My mom, after having me, lost about 1/3rd of her hair volume, and it stayed that way. She's 77 now, and it stayed the same all her life. After menopause she did not lose more hair, it just stayed the same since after pregnancy; never grew back in.
I'm 15 pp and the past two weeks the hair loss has hit me hard 😭 My hair is my everything in regards to my appearance and it's the way I have me time and makes me feel like me again and when I see clumps coming out it really affects me. I'm sure it wasn't this bad with my previous two
I never lost any hair when I had my son. It behaved normally while pregnant and didn’t fall out in chunks at all. However, after the birth of my daughter. My second child. I lost soooo much hair it was horrific. I saw a specialist who confirmed bald spots. So much hair and it left bald patches. My daughter is a year and 4 months old now, and I’m still loosing masses amounts of hair loss. Not every women experiences postpartum hair loss, and not every woman experiences the same amount of hair loss. My doctor told me not all women have their hair grow back either.
I really wish they teach these things. It didn't happen with my first baby but definitely did with my second and I was in a panic until my hair dresser told me what was going on.
I've gone through this 6 times. I swear I'm still recovering from postpartum hair loss from my now 3 yr old. Not still losing hair, but still working on making my hair seem normal again.
CSB: I had my daughter at 31 weeks (severe preeclampsia, yay), and I really didn't notice much postpartum hair loss - I assume because I was only pregnant for seven months? My COVID-stress hair loss was way more significant.
Yes I was so concerned when I was pulling out chunks of hair when i washed it in the shower. The front section was the worst it still hasn’t completely grown back and I’m a year postpartum
How does the hair gets back into a regular rhythm and it doesn’t look like we are going bald anymore? Also I feel like I lost more hair after my daughter than after my son, is there any truth to that?
I would imagine that as the reproductive hormones rebalance themselves, the hair follicles go back to their normally functioning phases. Like MDJ said, all the hair doesn't fall out at once and you won't go bald. So some of the follicles are going to still remain in the growth phase. It must all balance itself out after the postpartum period and goes back to the average 100 strands per day. As far as hair loss being affected by the sex of the baby, I have no idea but that's a really interesting question!!!
Thinking more about it, MDJ always emphasizes that every pregnancy is different for every person and from one pregnancy to another. Was there anything about your pregnancy with your daughter that was very different from your son? For example, did you have a lot of hyperemesis during that pregnancy? That could certainly cause more hair loss if it meant you were unable to hold down as many nutrients or even stay hydrated. Were there certain food aversions you had while pregnant with your daughter? I'm just trying to think about potential reasons why you'd experience more hair loss with one than the other that isn't related to their biological sex... 🤔
The main difference I could notice between my pregnancies were: - hcg higher with my daughter (at same DPO based off how dark the line was on the tests) - not as much cravings and less weight gain with my daughter (max weight similar) - more sleep deprived with my son (yay for colicky babies) - daughter had a little bit more hair than my son though both were mostly bald - didn’t have morning sickness with either (felt mildly nauseated a couple times for both pregnancies but nothing bad) - didn’t have aversions with my daughter but couldn’t smell the scent of eggs with my son… - both were born at 41+2 🤷🏻♀️ So I guess all in all pretty similar pregnancies. My hair had gone back to normal some time after my son was born but was curious about the mechanics of follicules spacing out their cycles after synchronising during pregnancy 🙂
@@ladyninja3014 So interesting! I wonder if there are any studies on this. My sister has three children - girl 21, boy 8, and girl 5 - and she has the most glorious head of hair you could even imagine! Fine baby strands of straight, smooth hair but HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF THEM. Her hair is so thick and sleek and healthy it's marvelous to look at. And she swears that her pregnancies destroyed her hair and I think she's insane because it's so incredibly gorgeous. Like a horse's mane.
@@carag2567 we unfortunately aren’t all blessed with the same gorgeous head of hair 😆 I have plenty of baby hairs that look absolutely crazy and can’t get my hair to look smooth, so I’m embracing the messy bun look 🙂 Does your sister take any supplement for her hair?
I knew a woman who naturally didn’t grow and hair (or barely) but after her first pregnancy she actually started growing some Not too extreme and still pretty thin But basically some average thin short hairgrowth I found that quiet fascinating (but I was very small when I knew her so yeah don’t remember much sadly)
Yeah I know, but I just loved how nice and thick my hair was when I was pregnant and my finger nails, and my skin too🤗. I used cocobutter and mother's friend from my neck to my toes one stretch mark about an inch with my second pregnancy none with my first.
It didn’t happen noticeably for me with my first and second but after my third I had some pretty bad bald spots along my hairline. So I freaked out and shaved my head and now I have a buzz cut 😅
@@HakunaMatata-gr9mm I have a very full and healthy head of hair. I buzzed it for the first time October 2022 and for the last time February 2023, and now I’ve got a pixie haircut that’s a bit on the longer side. My bangs go to about my cheek bones
Going on the PILL made my long hair fall out in HANDFULS every time I showered. I also went from 95lbs to 120 lbs in just ONE MONTH. It was terrifying.
My hair gets so bad that I just shave it off once it starts falling out. I just can't deal with the hair loss and it looks so bad when it starts to grow back if I don't. At one point I lost so much hair in the shower that I used it to spell out help me on the shower wall.

Q: What do some women lose after giving birth?
MDJ (instinctively, with no hesitation whatsoever): Free time!

Free time and massive chunks of your sanity

Mine isn't the same as before I had kids either.
@Rachel Cooper mine is dry now, whereas, before pregnancy, I considered it to be oily...
I lost an inch, at my hairline, and my hair never grew past my shoulders

@@AdaTaropa I'm so sorry. :(
I explain this to patients early on so they are not surprised if/when it happens! (They still don’t believe me when it happens…..)
yesss. I lost nearly all my lashes with my daughter! I was freaking out. until after I had her they started growing back lol
I've gone through this after labour and after I had tough recovery post surgery. It's depressing. I hate it and freaks me out.
This is why I can only grow really long hair while pregnant!! Like from shoulder length to just above my hips by the end of pregnancy.

My mom’s hair actually thicken after my birth and my brother’s birth. It also got extremely more curly. We all blame it on hormones.
I hope she enjoys her thick curly hair. Inspiration to girls with fine straight hair.
Omg that explains so much. I thought it was new mom stress making my hair fall out!!

I had postpartum hair loss and then a couple years later I had gastric bypass and had hair loss from that too.

I recommend that you keep taking the "prenatal" vitamins and give your body more time to go back to the way your hair had been before giving birth
