    To those who are complaining that the restoration is less technically adequate than the original, unless you have seen a photo of the original, I don't think you can say that. 1. The 'before' version is heavily damaged and worn and those details you think you see in that can be anything from a previous restoration to the effects of old varnish. 2. Not every old art work is technically competent just by virtue of being old. 3. The restorer notes that it's the first attempt at such a difficult restoration ever done alone. 4. It's extremely easy to be an armchair critic. The work is difficult if not impossible, and the choice to let this old artwork crumble into dust and paint chips would mean we never saw that element of sadness -- or is it thoughtfulness in the eyes of the man sitting for his portrait with his quill and book. I enjoyed seeing it, and I enjoyed the video. I don't mind saying that I, myself, won't be the one to restore my grandfather's oil painting that my brother accidentally punched a hole in.

      I have not seen a restoration on a painting this damaged either. Kudos to her for what she did. Reading the comments here I have noticed many negative ones, and have an idea.With a painting in this state, and not being by a master,it would be interesting to see a sort of experiment..
      First, take a photograph of the painting in it’s frame as it is.
      Second, restore the painting to an extent, only touching up what paint you started with and leaving the bare spots bare. Take another photo.
      Third, finish the complete restoration of the whole painting.
      Fourth, display them together so people such as myself, an art lover but not a painter, can see the nuances in the art of restoration. I think many people would like to see that, the effects of a little versus a lot of restoration can make. Yeah, now we could have some great conversations around the pros and cons of different conservation approaches. Hope this actually makes sense to you. Just my opinion.

    • @kiirakunn
      @kiirakunn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      @icampos89 Its a priceless piece of art from past and you already know those are limited and not infinite...it tells us alot about those times. The historical figures, the fashion, the art style through each era...its important, although it doesnt seem 1 painting makes a difference. Alot of things we know today about how things were hundreds and thousands of years ago is because we preserved and studied paintings, and of course other mediums like writings, books, etc. You cant disagree preserving anything is a waste of time. Its like saying we should permanently burn all movies after they are shown in theaters since we saw em, no reason to have em anymore. Lol.

    All the people complaining about miniscule details in the comments as if they could do it better, I think the restorer did a great job, they didn't paint over anything either just filled in where the paint had gone so it definitely still classifies as the original painting. It's not like how in different eras artists would literally paint over a painting completely to change it to match that eras style eg) the painting of princess Isabella which was painted over to match victorian standards

    • @cheyennechapman5348
      @cheyennechapman5348 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its those details that separates this artist from the rest, those details were put there for a reason. As many people have commented for example, the eyes are different this "miniscule detail" shifted the piece so much that people of untrained eye can even tell. That my friend is NOT a good thing.

      Art degree here, with such a large undertaking, years of training in painting is needed, you may have trained in restoration, but this is not the same as studying fine arts, the problem with the lady who painted the portrait above is that she's put too much of herself in the work, so because her perspective is flawed it shows within the painting, even I who have years of fine art training under my belt wouldn't attempt to fix this unless I was confident that I could mimic the old style perfectly, I probably could.. but I'd need to brush up against a master restorer first before I did so.

    BEAUTIFUL WORK !!!..... To all the idiots who think they are masters of ?..something ? Take a reality pill....Your not ! This portrait is not a master artist work of genius.... it's a portrait done by someone with some-what artistic skills making a living. This portrait is someones relative or family. It is not some countries "National Treasure". Now, through the knowledgeable artistic talent of this gifted restorer, it is preserved and its youth revitalized for generations to appreciate. We can Step back in time to see that moment the artist and the seated subject shared. That's the magique of art and i fore one, appreciate the restorers hard work.

    Wonder if delicate areas like the eyes can be done digitally first, where you can do several interpretations on different layers. Then the approved version get executed on the painting. Anyway, closely observing pixels of restoration can help with mixing the exact color of paints.

    I don't know if this was a museum commission but there certainly was an impressive amount of time and money put into this undertaking. either way a individual or a museum conservation the repair work was an impressive one. do we leave this original work to fall into further disrepair or do we make a valiant attempt to stop its decline. good job!

    • @red.aries1444
      @red.aries1444 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a nice portrait painting, but it doesn't look like a great masterwork of art. So I don't think an art museum owns this painting. I don't think they would spend so much money for the restoring/reconstruction.
      The person on the paintings seems to be more of historical interest. He looks like a priest or monk, maybe he is important for a religious order or a diocese. The painting is old, but not so old as you would aspect by the damage, the roman number says MDCCCLXII = 1862, so there is a good chance that there are other portaits of him, maybe even photographs exist. The recreation of the painting was much work, but the restorer didn't had to make to much assumptions, as the background and the clothes are not very complicated. The painting was mabey found in the attic of a church and the damage was from a leaking roof. To much damage to hang it up directly in a portrait gallery, but they have found someone to sponsor the restoring.

      I think for me, the line between restoration or recreation more lies within whether the new paint has been applied OVER the old art. If the paint has strictly only been applied to the areas that have lost their pigment then I class it as a restoration personally. If they are painting over it, then definitely recreation.

    First - Amazing work by the restorer. Bravo. Second: It was not so much a restoration as a complete repainting. I could understand if this has been from the renaissance period but to so extensively 'restore' a piece from this period is, to me, incomprehensible. Perhaps a replica painting to be hung alongside the original might have created a great deal of interest in the public and saved on costings. As for the Restorer - you are a true master of your craft. It was a pleasure to watch.

    Restoring this was more work and know-how that the artist made back in 1879! Well done.

    Pretty decent outcome considering how damaged the painting was. Tough job for sure.

    That was a 45-50% loss. It seems an impossible conservation with any high degree of accuracy. The finished product looks all right, but I'm inclined to think too many assumptions had to be made.

    I saw the original paint of the "left eye" will following you whatever your angle of view to the paint.
    Comparing to the "right eye",
    Only a few artists have the skill to make a Portrait/Paint with "follow eyes" like a photograph.
    However, you have a great talent, Bravo!!

    I’m not an artist but it’s amazing how much repair she had to do, and it’s a very good work. There’s a little bit off with the expression but she repairs, not drawing.

    Truely amazing.
    At what point does a restoration of a piece of art actually become the art itself and the original art become secondary?
