Thank you fro that Soft Shackle tutorial, When I was a kid this man who lived down on the corner, he was into off road racing. He would let me hang out and learn about wrenching and preparing a rig to race. He was getting a Toyota Land Cruiser with a Chevy V8 in it for the first Baja 1000. He was the president of NORRA that created the Baja races. His name is Ed Pearlman, I long for those days, just hanging out and learning. Take care and stay safe.
UPDATE! We just got back from the BAJA 1000 2023. We had two trucks this year and hit a lot of silt and mud. We used these soft shackles many many times. They worked great! Even when caked in mud and dirt. I need to make more. Dirt isn’t good for rope. I’m going to wash them in the laundry.
I have a few of the badlands shackles, and aside from them being super stiff when brand new, theyre great. I recommend breaking them in ahead of time instead of waiting till you're in 3' of swamp trying to slip that knot through with one hand😂
i made a set...thanks to your teachens..lol i moded mine.... instead of a sincher loop i just double loop over the knot making it work with 2 loops instead of a single loop pull at the base...thanks again ..peace out...
Ceramic knives work better on dyneema/spectra. Rather than push with a fid, you can pull with a bent wire. Seizing wire about 2.5 feet long, folded in half. The ends wrapped around a handle. Insert the sharp bend at your exit point and push through your entry point. Feed the very end of your rope between the wires and pull through.
i havent been to climbing store yet, but I did convince my crafty wife to use her leather sewing machine to make me some nice machine sewn leather tubes, complete with laser etched Logos. Really nice touch and they should be durable as well.
Dude! OMG thank you!!! How often do you watch a knot fastening video and hear all kinds of misinformation much less the wrong terminology utilized throughout? Just yikes already man! Love the tutorial video and how easy to follow it was as well, mad props.
Quality video! Only thing you're missing is some blue gloves... You know, to go w your blue rope, blue shirt,.... Blue.... Dammit, the wife warned me this wasn't funny. Nonetheless, I appreciate the shared knowledge.
It seems to me that splicing the rope would create a much weaker stress point. I have seen other soft shackles where they pass one end under then over the knot which prevents the shackle from slipping.
Para cord for bracelets is good. You don’t necessarily want the strongest material there unless you have a break away clasp. Would hate to have it catch on something and not break itself.
@Bear agreed. Army basic training stand was to strip the core for tethering gear. 1 it was tighter and a better presentation. 2 typically avoid by 1, if got snagged it would snap before you. With the core you are getting broke not the tether.
Great video. How do you add the 1 inch hollow webbing? I'm guessing that you added it to the cord after you made the loop and before starting the button knot-
Can you run ly6 07 to 13 cam packages in a l96 or is the newer harnesses cam sensor different etc something I’m not informed of and ecu to hard to tune don’t see many cam kits for the l96 trying to swap a 2015 2500 in to my 04 1500 I noticed you said the only difference is injector plugs any help and information would be greatly appreciated thank you for your time and our veterans
Great video, thanks, one of the best how tos out there, I will use it to make a few of my own for fun. However stating soft shackles are about as strong as 3/4 steel shackles is a little misleading. How do you define strong? Cheers

Make things easier for guys who are new at doing this it would be much beneficial to draw a couple of lines up one leg of the rope that way when tightening the knot you'll know exactly which one you're following.
interesting. it kind of looks like a diamond knot or a kings crown but sort of tied upside down. can someone tell me the actual name of this knot for the button?
I had to bunch the 1” webbing up to be able to bury the tag ends into the material. Then I just kept pushing and squeezing the webbing over the doubled part. The webbing can’t be melted in the ends or it’ll be too stiff.
I had some old climbing webbing on hand. Climbing webbing has a service life of only about 5 years. So climbers, or maybe climbing gyms, or scout troops that have a climbing a program might have a lot of unusable webbing on hand.
@bear I was only finding it up to 1 inch for climbing. With the hydro hose sheath a -20 fit over both pieces nicely, and can be put on after tying or replaced when worn.
The order available is the Order of Operations. This is a diy or available commercially form the quoted/ compared pice from HF. This is life supporting equipment so liability insurance is prohibitively high for small scale.
What David said above is correct. I’d love to sell them but I’d probably get sued. The warning labels on commercially available ones is very long and written by lawyers I don’t have.
But you can make seeveral so the cost of the tools will be amortized over the number of soft shackles you make. A fid is less than $10 and a sharp knife is probably already on hand. For me, the know is too complicated - I'll just go and buy some good qualioty ones.
The knot is called a Button knot. It is identified by seeing that the working ends exit the knot next to and parallel to the standing ends when done. This just means that the ends come out where they went in. It allows you to bury the ends and make a nice clean looking knot. Sof shackles made in thinner rope like 1-5mm Dyneema use a Diamond knot where the ends come out the top of the knot. These knots aren’t sinnest to the loads of off-road use. The diamond knot is also not as thick as the button knot.
Over all good job. it is nice to see Ryan( #HowKnot2 ) getting credit as the reliable sorce he has become;for all his years of work/ efforts load testing to see what key notes/differences are between reality/variances and lab test environment. out hear in the real world its 2 strands = double strong minus hafe for connecting them . 1 strand =½strong ,lose 50% for the knot. Having used Ryan's work to build my own, and his testing tells me that the oversize brummel loop is a failure and should not be put into service. It's a redo only, knot to be trusted , my fingers are important to my way of life( 9¾ club).

Love the shirt. I have my Father's flag. He served WWII until Vietnam.
I like the idea of making my own soft shackles. I used to be an emergency response technician and have used ropes, hitches, and tons of knots.

Splicing back through at the end with the tails actually increases the diameter where the sliding loop bears down. Creating less of a pinch.
Great vid for off-road DIYers
Well done! Thanks for the tutorial.
I’ve been practicing with paracord making mini soft shackle bracelets. Be interesting to test the bracelets strength
With core ~ 2x for Doubling strand count, then reduce by 50% because knots .
In short ~550lbs +/-100lb( MSB of 550 cord)

Just like you said, before the knot tying begins. It is tough to bunch it up out of the way for some parts. A strong clamp can help.
Thanks Bear. Great video.
I stole my wife's large knitting kneedle's and cut them to make a fid tool. Works great.
Yeah I will just buy them lol I can't do that knot 😢 great stuff mate 👍

Yes Eagle Scout Days.

That was the hardest part. Practicing with two different colors of rope is a great way to get started. The clockwise technique was my aha moment.
Best video I’ve ever seen!
You clearly have never seen the underwater basket weaving video series then!!
traction boards work great
Agree. They saved us a bunch of times at Baja this year. These are great if you need to get pulled out.
Just don’t spin tires in them. They’ll melt.
Would a monket fist work for this?
Perhaps it would. The larger the knot the better resistance to getting pulled through the loop.
interesting. it kind of looks like a diamond knot or a kings crown but sort of tied upside down. can someone tell me the actual name of this knot for the button?
It is called the buttoon knot
You should be going through the knotted end and over top the knott it will never come lose or slip!
I’m not sure what you mean. Are you talking about when making the shackle or when using it after it is tied?
@@bear4380 I think he means to double back on itself over the button knot. th-cam.com/video/sj9vZDq1dB0/w-d-xo.html

Where could I get the abrasion protectors?
Anywhere that uses 1” climbing webbing. It only has about a 5 year lifespan. Shorter with heavy use. They might give you some. Or buy new.
Hi, where do you source your abrasion resistant tubing?
I'm thinking about the hollow webbing that they sell at Scheels in the climbing section

Rubin's cube of knots ...
It takes some time and patience to learn. I never did learn the Rubik’s cube

Yes that is true. I always like learning new things. I made about 15 of them for friends and for use by NTD Racing Team.
@@danburch9989 A sharpie works well as a fid to open the braid....
Where did you get the tubing ?
From old retired rock climbing webbing. I got mine from a BSA scout camp who retired what they used. Can also buy new if necessary.

Yes. Burying the ends into the hollow braid of the rope.
