Many years ago, I suffered a closed head injury from being in an automobile accident with a drunk driver. I had read an article where reading the Kjv would improve my reading comprehension and improve my phonology. Basically, I couldn’t remember anything I read and couldn’t remember how words sounded. I began reading the Kjv and it’s sytax and difficult wording improved my everyday reading comprehension. Good video, I appreciate the information and positive messages.

In 2004 I was a soldier in Iraq and was wounded by an IED and was a puncturing head wound on the left side of my head. Had a lot of problems with language. This includes problems with reading.
I have found for myself when reading archaic KJV, in a sense my mind was arrested or frozen and could not get past the Older ways of saying things with the there’s and thou’s and verbs ending with th.
Before Iraq, I had no problems reading and understanding the KJV...well now it is different.
If I were to suggest anything besides the KJV, the MEV or Modern English Version is what I would suggest.
It is a committee translation using the same texts as the KJV translators and mostly follow the AV but without the archaic lingo.
"Being a slow reader is a virtue" That makes me feel better, I have dyslexia so I read very slowly to make sure I'm taking in what I am reading.
I'm not saying KJV only for I read other translations. Having that said I prefer the KJV for a simple reason. It forces me to slow down, to taste the heavenly manna. It requires you to do word studies to chew Gods Word to get the most flavor before digesting. In a movie Phenomenon Trovolta shares an apple with children and tells them that when they eat the apple, it forever becomes a part of them. It certainly is true of Gods Word when done in prayer and meditation. So I encourage you to read KJV, to study what is says, and if at any point understanding don't come, read other translations before you pick up a commentary.
I can totally and heavily relate, honestly I needed this. This was confirmation, I strongly believe that I'm going to stick with the KJV!!

I can embrace your reasoning on this. I tended to avoid the KJV due to the archaic language, thinking I’d have issues. I’m a slow reader to begin with, so slowing down causes be to pay attention to the words and retain them. I don’t intend to use it as my primary, but I have began really enjoying its grandeur and majesty. It’s totally worth it!
I started with the NIV and now have switched over to KJV. I wouldn't say I am KJV only but I really love the KJV!
Sometimes the newer translations I feel like I’m reading a normal book.

@@BibleLovingLutheran I was referring to the way the phrase translated "for God *so* loved the world" in the KJV since most versions either ape the KJV, or mistranslate the word that is rendered "so" in the KJV. (It's the same word for "thus". The KJV is not wrong on this matter, but interpreting it as "so much" IS wrong.)
To the comments on here, the KJV is one best English translations of the Bible. But I can't take anyone seriously that says that the KJV is the only translation you should read and anyone who prefers any other version makes them an inferior Christian.
This video answers my prayer for guidance on what passages and version to start memorizing. I have a 3 hour commute now, and wanted to use that time for scripture memorization, but I kept agonizing over what version to use, wanting it to be unchanging, but understandable. KJV Psalms is what I'm decided on now. Thank you!

Thanks brother. You motivated me to read through it. On the Mcheyenne reading plan. I'm using the Westminster and the Reformation Heritage Study bible and begun memorizing Ephesians. I have to say, it's the best translation to memorize imho!

While I do not share your particular theological persuasion, I must echo nearly everything you said about the KJV in this excellent video. The KJV has put an indelible mark on the English language and the Christian lexicon. As you say, even if one does not think the translation is accurate or based on the best manuscript evidence, it is still well worth the effort to read it simply to become connected to the rich legacy of it's use by many esteemed preachers and teachers over the centuries. Just think of all the brilliant minds that learned how to read and had their vocabularies built up by hours spent in this amazing work!
After comparing many translations over the years, I have come to the conclusion that the NKJV is best for my needs, as someone who leans towards the TR position. I still love the KJV but am aware that even if I understand some of its more demanding passages, those with whom I share the gospel will require regular verbal sidebars from me to track with it. That's just the way it is, in light of today's public education and, sadly, the fact of a somewhat "post-Christian" society in which even many who identify as Christian see church attendance as an optional activity.

I primarily use the NKJV, but the KJV is beautiful. As a member of the Orthodox faith, I do have an Orthodox Study Bible, but its language, especially in Psalms, is far less lyrical. Thank you Pastor Matt. No matter what version a person uses, I agree, familiarity with it cannot be overestimated. Also, you should always have one in your collection. This is the Bible I used for deep study when I first started to use an English version. I do use the NKJV now as my primary followed by the ESV and NASB and TLV but the KJV has some renderings that I just love and I keep going back to it.
The nasb was denounced by one of its co creators.
The new versions pervert many key verses. Like 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Corinthians 2:17, Colossians 2:8-9, 1 Timothy 6:20 and many others.

@@kingjamesbiblebeliever8387 I think you have a very wrong understanding on how textual criticism works... what you call perversions can also be found in places in the KJV but of course, if you listen to KJVOnlists teacher they will never tell you this. We have God´s word in the extensive sea of manuscripts God left to us, not in one 1611 English version of the Bible. Think about it for one second, that means nobody in history ever had God´s word or anyone that did not speak English for that matter. That is how ridiculous the KJVO claim is. But I for one, I love the KJV and I use it daily, but it is not the only version of the Bible, it is one version and a good one for sure. Stay away from radical KJV extremists and focus on the message of the Bible instead.
Moises G.V. I completely disagree. You said to focus on the “message” of the Bible. That is completely subjective, that could mean anything. I believe God preserved his words in the AV 1611. I am aware of textual criticism. It has been something I’ve been studying for a while. I have many books on the subject. For instance, I have James White’s book: The King James Only Controversy. A book which tries to “debunk” KJV onlyism. He fails miserably along with all of the other material I have read. I am not some novice. I have done extensive research and I have not seen one objection to KJV onlyism that holds water. All of them fall apart.
Really like the slow reading point. It’s something I’ve never thought of before but I do read the KJV at a slower pace than my NASB (1977 ed., relegated to a reference now). The wording is probably why.

Hi Matthew, found your discussions on Bible Translations very insightful. What are yor thoughts on the 1599 Geneva Bible recently reprinted by Tolle Lege Press . I understand it was greatly loved by the Puritans even after the KJV of 1611 was produced. Some say the Geneva Bible is more Puritan than the KJV. What re your thoughts?

Great over view. I would just like to add that using the King James also offers apologetic benefits. Latter Day Saints (Mormons) exclusively use the AV as their Bible of choice. The more familiar one is with the King James the more easily it may be to discuss the gospel with Mormons and point out the real meaning of the Bible passages used to support Mormon doctrine.
The word order of the KJV makes me read it slower. Sometimes I find myself skimming through in the modern versions and not knowing what I just read. It’s not the only version I read, but I do love it very much
I read the ESV today and I love it, however many years ago I read and memorized much of the KJV. What’s a bit humorous to me is, when I pull scripture up in my mind to preach to my own heart it’s always in the KJV. Great video Matt.
I love the KJV, for all the reasons you stated and more. I have a plethora of translations and like to keep many on hand. I will always have several KJV's on hand though, just love the feel and flow of the language. God bless.

KJV is indeed a marvellous work. On the text of the KJV, I might suggest James Snapp. He has several Kindle books out on the KJV text. While I had never heard of him before, his arguments for the textus receptus are quite strong, and he seems to know the ancient versions and the Church Fathers in a way that few do. BTW, I enjoy your material greatly.
Wonderful points! I do enjoy the necessary 'chewing' on of the language that allows and somewhat forces me to spend more time on consideration of God's Word.
What about the Geneva version before the KJV?
I'm not KJV only, but it is my favorite translation. I use the NKJV and updated Geneva Translations, also, and have been using the ESV more. I keep and RSV and a Douay Rheims around, also. Since I have the ESV Apocrypha, I haven't been using the RSV very much anymore.
My Spurgeon's Morning and Evening has always been KJV, and so many other books I have use the KJV, so It will remain my primary bible translation. But, the other two you will review are very good, also. Thanks for the great videos, pastor.

@@emotionalmodels8463 I don't have a definitive opinion on the matter but I would say every human is a sinner. If you are looking for a perfect human to translate or be involved in the translation of scripture I don't think you are going to find one. God can use whomever he wills I think. There is a great book called the "Holiness of God" by RC Sproul. I think you would get a lot from it as I did not so long ago. They have a free booklet on ligonier ministries website I think. Just puts into perspective who God is which forces us to inspect who we are in relation.

I do believe, however, we as people need to stop this blind, incessant, and illogical defensiveness for God, while in all other such cases such defense would be flat out wrong and simply not true.
The validity of such defenses for God gets the legs kicked out right beneath it when you have a man literally skinning people alive and shoving long poles up people's anus's because HE judged them to be a witch. If your daughter or son was burned to death at a stake from the bottom of their toes, you would not go home and say, "Well, God works in mysterious ways."
People need to stop believing in Evil deeds just because Evil people say that God told them to do them. This alone would be the Devil at work...and winning!

There actually have been different versions, but because the last major revision was in the mid-18th century, nobody notices. Noah Webster tried a further update in 1833, but it didn't take. I sometimes think that it was the American Revolution that froze the KJV in time. Otherwise, the RV and ASV might never have happened, because at some point in the 19th century there would have been a commonly-received update.
Yes really well said about the KJV slowing you down because you don’t readily understand is not necessarily a bad thing because it gives you an opportunity to really meditate on God word and let God reveal it to you. Great point! I’ve tried various modern translations but I keep coming back to KJV and NKJV they are just so beautiful and I love that they don’t change. Also outside of the US KJV is still the most popular and best selling translation used in Churches etc. They have that deeply spiritual meaning that creates a reverence for me ❤ So I share your appreciation of KJV and NKJV.

The fact is that the Elizabethan-age English was able to make much finer distinctions than modem English. That is, "thou," "thee," "thy," and "thine," were used for the second person singular, whereas "ye," "you," "your," and "yours" were the corresponding words for the plural. Different words also were used for subject, object, and possessive modifier, as is still true for first and third-person pronouns.

My main translation is the ASV 1901, supplemented with the ESV.
My teenage years and early adulthood I was reading the NLT, then I moved to the ESV, then I moved to the ASV 1901.

I agree with every point you made concerning the KJV. People unfamiliar with the KJV are depriving themselves of a literary classic. Extremely accurate and I'm so glad that its a "fixed text." I doubt that there will EVER be a contemporary bible that is a fixed text. Thanks for the video, Matt.

I love my King James version. It has a wonderful poetry to it. I also have a NRSV bible which I also love. This is a much more straightforward and easier read. I use both regularly

I was told KJV have the least translation errors. With the Concordance in hand, it is a lot easier to understand and to study. Tough at the beginning but now it becomes easier and a must read. Other translation has no "flavor" to me; however, I will check others out once in a while.

Matt, do you know of any good paragraphed KJV settings other than the Clarion and Pitt Minion? I struggle with verse settings.
Have you looked at the New Cambridge Paragraph Bible?
@@markbrooks8623 Perhaps not seriously enough. I've read very mixed reviews on it. I'm not sure I want a KJV that's different from everyone else's KJV either. But I know there are significant advantages. Do you have one?
@@coryclark8577 I do. I'm not aware that it is different from other KJVs, except in the sense that David Norton tried to restore the original text of the translators in a modern setting. There were problems with the printed text from the first, really. The reality is, there are and have been different editions of the KJV with minor differences. There are differences between the Oxford and Cambridge texts even now.

Thank you for this video. I like what you said about "sloooowing down" our reading. I cannot agree with this more! This is something I've learned with a bit of age.
About the KJV and precision, Cool fact:
When the KJV says thou, thee, thy or thine it's rendering a Greek or Hebrew singular 2nd-person pronoun. When it has ye or you or your it's translating a plural pronoun. As there are well over 10,000 such "you" pronouns in the original texts, this adds an extra sharpness and a precision to God's word. The original languages have this distinction, and the Jacobean English of the KJV retains the distinction, and without exception.
I also find the "strangeness" of its phrasing to be a sort of benefit beyond just slowing the pace. James chapter 1's, "Superfluity of naughtiness" is very strange but likewise (or as such) very unforgettable. Ha. This aspect, for me, has greatly facilitated memorization. That and the reinforcement from the KJ's adaptations in hymns, and usage in creeds, old sermons, and even in modern media. "Hallowed be thy name" is what you'll hear even in film.

If you have a hard time understanding the meaning of some of the words in the king James there is a Bible out there called The Define King James Bible. Words that are not commonly used today are in bold and the definition is listed at the bottom of each page. I found it to be a great help.

There’s nothing like reading the Bible in archaic English to remind you that what you’re reading is the sacred and inspired word of the God of your fathers
if want to detect all of the archaic english that have changed in meaning, can read archaic kjv in parallel with free kjv verse by verse commentaries easily found on the internet.
I’m 67, grew up in a Lutheran Church which used the revised standard version which obviously is very king James…ish. I always automatically transposed all those thou arts and so forth in my mind to our modern English. I guess I was the original NKJV!!! When the NIV came out I loved it and moved away from the KJV. Then about 10 years ago, browsing the Bible section of a Barnes/Noble I found a large, soft print soft cover KJV…flipped to the Psalms and something leaped within me. The majesty and magic of that old English just felt so inspiring! I almost started reading out loud! Now when reading my kings James version if I stumble across a few words that confuse me I just go to my Bible app which has numerous versions and scroll through those it’s the perfect way to read the Bible

It makes so much more sense if you study the great vowel shift and particularly OP (original pronunciation) albeit you must learn thee, thou and ye... It is not hard to learn its adapting and luckily I learnt Shakespeare and was taught a little of late Middle English when applying the vowel shift which sounds so much more natural like a Summerset/Dorset accent so it goes with the flow.

Is there any non bias book about the history of the reformation and the process of how the king james bible was made?
I don't know about books, but I think Britannica's or Wikipedia's history of the Bible does a good job in explaining it. It's important to know that the translators relied on the Vulgate, which is itself a translation!

When I first opened a bible was KJV, I didn't understand until I prayed to Jesus Christ for knowledge and wisdom to read my bible. After that words just flow to my soul. the thee's and thou's and ye's arent what keep me from reading the KJV as my primarily translation, its the more archaic words such as 'mammon' in matthew 6:24, but i do agree with you that its an excellent translation, that being said i do attend a KJV only church so I get to enjoy it with a pastor who's experienced with the language and explains it well when something comes up that isn't used in the modern english language
You make an excellent point. What I've done is every time I see a word I don't understand I underline it and go straight to the dictionary and write the definition in my Bible. Then when the word comes up again, either I look back to what I wrote or I remember the definition. There's about 150 that you may have to look up but after you're done. Those words will never change, the Bible will never change. Plus you've learned some extra words that perhaps increase your vocabulary a little? But most importantly once you know those 150 words you're done, it's not going to change on you.
Yeah, the KJV is filled with awkward phrases and strange words, actually. My Nelson reference KJV is quite good at ferreting them out and footnoting them, so I don't have to use another bible. But when the entire context is missing, or if I'm lost on what is being said, I go to my NASB study bible.

I have several very old copies (including a couple of old Scoffields), but they are family heirloom...and I need something I can see...and write in.
I grew up in the old Methodist Church. (My bd is 09-11-43). The KVJ was all we had...until the RSV came along...so I still hear Scripture in KVJ language.
I don’t think it is necessary, or wise to insist that Sacred Scripture should sound like our every day speech. No.. Sacred Scripture should sound special....because it IS special.
As a Catholic, I sm forced to listen to the NAB at mass... The NZB is definitely not on anyone’s must have list...,
COVID has prevented me from attending mass for months...,snd when I did attend, the experience was not a good one... I sm not sure if I will be going back st all.

I agree with you in one condition you must put the King James to every other translation because it really leaves out verses and it's really bad all the other translations besides King James I do read the other translation but I always have a King James next to it
What? Putting a KJV translation next to another translation should be educational on how translations differ, but sometimes the source docs differ, and so it's not a responsible way of judging translation rigor and methodology! If a translation "leaves out verses", it's probably because the source docs or autographs it uses do not HAVE those verses. Too many people think the "editorial board" is corrupting the translation on purpose. Too bad!

I have a 2006 edition of the KJV by Penguin Classics, and it was updated; but mainly with respect to some second person singular pronouns.
I always refer to myself as KJV Best... I always seem to go back to it!

My Nelson reference KJV is excellent in footnoting difficult words and phrases! I've shied away from their full-on study bible, for the price and glitziness, however. I don't need color as much as notes and context.

We must keep in mind that KJV is "just" a translation, albeit an excellent and poetic one. It's one of several English translations. To suggest that people won't be properly saved unless they read it is absurd, since there are 6500 languages in the world today! But that doesn't stop some people, sadly. The KJV only purists love to compare other translations (like NIV) to it, claiming that any "differences" mean "corruption", which is laughable.
I read the KJV slowly, but I’m able to read the NKJV quickly. It just takes time to get used to.

I have a KJV, ESV & NIV study bible, these are one's I read.
Why do you read corrupt, incorrect, Catholic Bibles? In Fact I ask my buddies that all the time. When I go to Bible studies I have my King James and then I have my Catholic New American Bible. My buddies with the NIV and nasb Etc squirm when I show them my Catholic Bible matches theirs quite often.

If you get a chance, I'd be interested to hear how you handle a concern expressed by folks like Mark Ward ("Authorized: The Use and Misuse of the King James Bible") - he says that educated readers who aren't put off by "thees" and "thous" and "peradventures" can still misread the KJV because of how much the meaning of common vocabulary has shifted over the years. One of the examples Ward gives is that of the word "appearance" in "abstain from all appearance of evil" (1 Th 5:22) - we assume it means "outward aspect" but actually to the KJV translators, it meant something more like "instances." So unless we're comparing with more modern translations, even educated readers are prone to misinterpret the text.

Hope it's a study bible! KJV (or any Bible) is not self-explanatory, IMO. It's good to have a study bible so you know things like "Shinar" means Babylon. Otherwise you'll just be reading without understanding. I recommend getting the NASB study bible, but reading the KJV. When you get stuck on the KJV, go to the NASB study bible!

The KJB has been revised often enough that there are occasional differences between editions.
The KJV is faithful, poetic, exact, doesn't change every few years as other translations. The connectivity to historic men of revival is a good argument. Good video.

@Emotional Models: I own several editions of the KJV. The two oldest ones are from the 19th century. They are treasures and witnesses of times past to me. One was commented by Pastor Brown, the other one by Scott&Henry. One can't believe how reverent they were in those days when they talked and wrote about the Lord and the Word of God. You see, the KJV caused people to become humble and God-fearing. A big plus of the KJV is also that it is untouched by modern philosophies such as feminism and gender-ideology. By the way, the English Bibles that I use mostly are the ESV Study Bible and the John-MacArthur Study Bible the last of which has the New American Standard text. These two are both very exact translations and spelt in modern English. Besides, the Lord is King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev 19:16) and sets in as King and gives wisdom to whom He likes to (Dan 2:20-22). Merry Christmas and God bless!
I found kjv for me is best for sharing and paraphrasing to other people but it gives me a hard time in many places as well.

The Westminster reference Bible solves a lot of the older English word problems in the KJV. Also, if one is not familiar with the language of the KJV One will not be able to read the Puritans and Spurgeon and all the older theologians with that much clarity. The language, syntax and grammar they used was that of the KJV. It is been about five years since I have used the KJV exclusively. it has become so familiar to me that it’s like reading the newspaper now.
Thomas Nelson’s KJV reference Bibles do the same thing as the Westminster I’m pretty sure.

The, “thee’s” and “thou’s” of the king James are the easiest obstacle to get past, by far, in the text! Anyone who makes that their objection obviously has not spent much time reading it or they would know better. I’m actually going through the KJV right now and attempting to strengthen my grasp of it. 😬 Beyond the archaic vocabulary and words I didn’t even know existed is the faithful “word for word” rendering that I’m finding out fills the text. The unusual and disjointed sounding sentence structures that bear little resemblance to modern English is simply due to the faithfulness of the translation in many cases! I recently read somewhere that ‘the KJV translators didn’t try to make Greek into English, they made English fit into Greek’. I know exactly what they are talking about now.

Okay, first of all the word "God" does not appear anywhere in the Bible that was written by the people YOU believe were "God's Chosen People," (and so were inspired to write such a book), which were the Jews.

Dyslexia prevented me from reading the KJV and force me the learn Greek. Now that I read reed Greek I find all English versions very flawed. If I quote the Bible in an article for English Readers is I use one of the Literal Version or MEV. My main objection to most English versions is the handling of prepositions and synonyms. As a dyslexic I alway substitute the definition for the prepositions which leaves me scrambling on my phone to even understand the texts used in sermons! Now that I read Greek I find the handling of synonyms in almost all English versions prevent any since proper exegesis.
I was brought up on the KJV to be honest I never knew there were other versions until my mid 20’s. My church that I go too that is more baptist has it’s standard as the KJV bible. I read other versions and enjoy them but the psalms have more beauty in the KJV
Just FYI:
1) Isaiah 34:7: "The UNICORNS shall come down with them..."
The original Hebraic word that was used was "WILD OX," but the KJV decided to change it to "UNICORN."
2)Genesis 2:8: "And the Lord planted a garden in EDEN..."
The original Hebraic word that "EDEN" replaced is "DELIGHT."
The proper noun "EDEN" was completely fabricated...for it is not what the original Hebraic text said...which is "DELIGHT."
*The KJV changed a Hebraic adjective (delight) into an English, proper noun (Eden).
Such mistranslations are as long as the KJV Bible.

Trinitarian Bible Society do a nice affordable hardback copy of the KJV bible. They also have some fancier bindings, but that's not the kind of bible I buy. haha

Why did you stop at just 3 translations?
If I was to answer that question, and I know you didn't ask me LOL, I would say it's because you have the King James version and the new King James Version, and then you have all the rest that matchup and use the same words mostly. They're all Catholic Bibles. Fact I carry around the Catholic Bible so I can show my brethren how their new versions match it so often.
