  • Popularly known as “Planxty Irwin,” this beautiful Irish harp tune by Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738) is properly titled “Colonel John Irwin.” The honoree of the composition was a native of Co. Sligo and a veteran of the wars in Flanders. “Planxty” is a word evidently coined by Carolan from the Latin verb “plangere’ (to strike) and roughly meaning “composed in honor of.”
“Planxty Irwin” is, in the arranger’s opinion, one of Carolan’s loveliest compositions, and calls to mind the quintessential fond farewell.
This guitar arrangements is from Glenn Weiser’s book “Celtic Harp Music of Carolan and Others for Solo Guitar”
Performed by Glenn Weiser on a 1926 0-21 Martin guitar. Recorded June 19th, 2013 at The Soundry, Soddy-Daisy, TN. For information about Glenn’s CDs, guitar and harmonica books, and virtual private music lessons, visit wwwDOTcelticguitarmusicDOTcom
