A good resource, when you rent, are photography backdrops. They're cloth, around 6'X9' in size, and cost in the $30 range. You can find imitations of every kind of wall, plus scenery. Put up curtain rods and then hide the rods in foam beams. On the rods you can put whatever stone, wood, brick, cob, adobe, cave, or daub & wattle that you want. You can use the scenery ones in recesses to create an illusion of depth, or as curtains if you live in the city.

You can also search for wrap-around shower curtains. Those are usually 6.5' to 7' tall and roughly 14' wide. I use a couple of them that look like tree trunks in a forest on my vending tent to great affect. There are also some that look like stone walls too.

2:42 It really will. This may seem odd, but it works: re-decorating my room motivated me to fix my sleeping habits and do weekly cleaning. I chose a chinoiserie/Japonesque fusion style of décor because I already liked that and it was easier to find things for it (same with Turquerie, if you're into that). I was already a tidy person, but I hated dusting and used to let it accumulate; I still hate it, but I now feel satisfied when I finish dusting because I don't feel indifference at best to the space I'm in.

I know of a few people that do this with gaming. Either a gaming room or a gaming corner. As for me, the thing I miss can't be replicated. I grew up in the middle of nowhere. Nearly every night as a kid, I could see the Milky Way. Now I have to go for a little drive, but being able to lay back, look at the night sky, and see, the wonder that lies beyond our world, it is always breathtaking.

My study is Edwardian/Arts and Crafts style. They did a lot of Pre-Raphaelite art and architecture, so my medieval stuff fits right in. I'm about to move into my late parent's house that I inherited which was actually built in 1919 at the end of that era, though many of the period details have been stripped out and I'm going to try to replace as many as I can. I'm going to have to move this beast of a desk (it's 5 x 4 feet and made of oak). I think I'm going to get movers for it since it's going to have to go down a flight of stairs in one house and up a flight of stairs in the other. Once I get moved, I think it's going to be wonderful - there's a working fireplace!

I live in a small apartment, which is very far from any kind of medieval style, but since moving here I have not only made my bedroom look more medieval, I've also turned an old storage room into a full-blown armory. My room isn't too special, just wallpapers that look like logs, and old armchair, my hand-drawn map of the fantasy realm my future book takes place in, candles, pelts and so on. But my armory is much more in depth, and it is my pride and joy. It took a few years to complete, but it looks and feels great. It's a little small and I hope to one day have a bigger room, but for now it's perfect. Swords, armor, clothing, bows, shields, lanterns. Oh, and the smells. By god, the smells. Linen, wool, leather.. I just love it, and I'm so proud of it. There's a video of it on my channel, in anyone wants to see it.

    • @TheSwedishRanger
      @TheSwedishRanger 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@hurraynature7449 Oh yeah, sure! But don't say I didn't warn you! Just a heads up, since I'm Swedish, there's a lot of Swedish names in the world. Basically, the human race live in Dalmeria, and speak Dalmish, which is Swedish. Other races speak English, Latin/Elvish, and the almost indecipherable tounge of the fabled fox people of Erridia.
The book would follow a character called Lorens Liljeblad throughout a big chunk of his life. He grows up without a mom and a younger sister to take care of, and eventually finds himself taken into the care of his uncle Jonar, who is a hirdman for the wealthiest family in the capital of Linden: the Aske family. Now, hirdman is best translated as Housecarl, a warrior serving a respected master.
Jonar teaches Lorens the way of weapons and battle, and at the tender age of nineteen, Lorens is accepted into the Aske hird. For the first time in his life he feels like he belongs somewhere. Over the coming years he also becomes very skillful in the art of tracking, and he becomes a close friend and loyal ally of the family leader, lord John Aske.
After proving his utter loyalty to the lord, Lorens is accepted into Decem, the ten most trusted warriors in the hird, serving as John's closest men and advisors.
Then, when Lorens is at the age of 24, lord Aske informs him that he believes someone within Decem is going to betray him. He doesn't know who or why, but he's sensing something is up. Shortly thereafter, John is murdered by a strange figure right in front of Lorens, and, upon finding him by John's mangled corpse with sword in hand, the hirdmen accuse him of the murder. Lorens has no option but to flee, as the hirdmen's loyalty to the lord is as unvawering as his own.
Together with his childhood friend Andara, and a Dark Elf called Talwin, bound to him by an oath of loyalty, Lorens sets out to find the real killer and clear his name, and unmask the real traitor within Decem, all the while being chased by both his former brothers-in-arms, the law and assassins out for his blood.
It's not a typical good-vs-evil story, nor is there a Chosen One or magical artifact.. It's a more grounded, personal story that in it's core is about loyalty and friendship, but also facing one's own demons.
I have more books planned for the future, all of them having names and most of the plot planned out. The second one would be called Skuggjägaren and take place at roughly the same time as the first, but in a different country. Third would be Månryttaren, and serves as a direct sequel to the first. And finally, Rävflickan, a prequel to everything.
I'm also continuously working on a number of short stories set in the same world, depicting various characters and events. Such as the story of Brynn, who, in his search for his missing mentor, finds himself trapped within the decrepit halls of Månsäter Castle...
Bit of a long comment, but I can't help it; I'm very passionate about my writing ^^

Nice! I moved into a new house with my parents just over a year ago, and maybe 2 or 3 months ago I hung all my weapons up on a wall in my bedroom. It's just 2 swords, 2 daggers, and my longbow. Eventually a quiver once I make one. It's a bit bare but when the door is open like it usually is, it fills in all the blank space and makes it look really good. Then by my bed I have a modern 6 cubby ikea style shelf with all my EDC stuff, and some other junk but I put a sheepskin over the top so all my necklaces, bracelets, knives, and other daily/work pocket gear can sit ontop and look fancy. The bed has a blanket with the map of Beleriand on it, and in my little walk in closet I have another 6 cubby shelf sideways with all of my leathercraft items and SCA/medieval gear set up ontop of, with some of my clothing in the cubbies below. It's bits and pieces spread around but with the room I have it's enough to always have something old-themed in sight, so I love it.

You can also find very good hardware second hand (I changed my window handles, door handles, for a few bucks). You can even find pretty plants second hand ! it really shows how important our environment is when something as simple as a rickety wooden desk made of literal trash can transform your whole outlook on your life.
I really wish I could do this, but I have 4 cats, and they would DESTROY the faux beams. I would have to make them out of something sturdier, though I suppose I could coat them in something that gives them a more solid skin.

Your laptop is stored in a wooden box. Don't leave it out when it doesn't have to be used. Get or make a leather cover for your tablet.
If you have a desktop, scanner, printer, or other large items, use bigger boxes with fretwork sides for ventilation. Or put them on slide-out platforms inside a cabinet.
Two very medieval items are cloths and chests. Throw a runner across your desk. Drape your chair with a Lady and the Unicorn coverlet. They always threw cloths on seating.. Don't use doors to hide things. Hang a curtain to hide shelves and then you don't have to dust the stuff, like the PC.
Chests are just really big boxes. Hope chests don't have a big demand, so they are cheap thrifted, but they medieval nicely with some fretwork panels. Then you put big flat cushions on top for seating.

I personally love adding HUGE tapestries on my walls to give them a bit of a medieval aesthetic. I make woven ones with custom designs, like family crests, logos, art, and whatnot. It can really bring together a room so nicely (and add a bit of an insulation factor). I'm also looking into how I can use the woven tapestries (which are functionally blankets, and pretty cosy ones at that) as a starting point for other projects, such as long, hanging banners or even ruana cloaks. It's super fun!

Eventually I'm going to turn my sewing room into an enchanted forest type area. I need to finish cleaning it out. When we bought our house almost 5 yrs ago we put a bunch of boxes and other just crap in there and I carved out a corner of the room for sewing. I want to put in a sewing table for cutting fabric and storage. My knees are telling me I'm too old to play floor troll anymore. Since I finish clearing out the extra stuff, which should be this winter, I'm going to start doing that wood land theme. I have a ceiling mural saved on Amazon and I also have a few tutorials saved for making a thunderstorm cloud complete with lighting. I'm in AZ and love the monsoon storms. Since we only get them for a few short months I plan to make my own. The various tables will take on a wooden almost tree like appearance. Sure the sewing machines will look out of place but everything else can look amazing. I got inspired to do this when I decided to put in a reading nook next to my side of the bed. Nothing fancy just a couple of ceap book cases from Amazon, a hammock chair, a fantasy tapestry and a water projector for the night. I added some plants and a small charging station table to store my phone, tablet, and laptop. Over all I think it cost me right around $150 for everything. It's not exactly princess quality, but it's cozy and I can enjoy loosing myself in a good fantasy novel or I can even pull my laptop out and do a little writing. 😉

Growing up I lived in a house that wasn't "medieval" (more like colonial), but which employed several faux style elements, especially in the living room. One of these were faux style beams on the ceiling. Now this was 1970 so we don't have real fake materials, but they were half beams suspended from the frame above (50 years later and the beams have warped a little which is only noticeable where they contact the drywall and cause slight openings). Eventually I am going to either upgrade the living room or my old bedroom which has been my computer spot for the past few years.

Our home is aesthetic in 2 ways. The house is from the 30's, which mimics the Victorian England style in a more subtle way, just like I wear Victorian/Edwardian inspired clothing on a daily basis. Our garden house is going to be more medieval/tudor cottage style, my husband builds the beams of real wood the same way you made it from styrofoam.

12:21 my family had something that looked very similar when I was growing up Ours was a bread box....
If it is, yours is taller than ours but that might be because your family might have made taller loaves than we did
It was to keep the working loaf of bread from going as stale as quick...I would think it would be something medieval people used as well.

another option is hand tools and hitting up cabinet builder shops for scrap wood that I suspect you would benefit greatly from. (not just to build things of actual wood that you want like shelves and such but that you will probably find a supplimental income too as you get better at building and making. not to mention a simple hand held circular saw, and drill can get you a long way, but adding a coping saw and such for those things you want to do really nice cut work on later, and even a jig saw (3 items to use battery power outside or wherever ect, but still not come home so worn out you can barely drag yourself in, though hand based tools can be used initially that are super cheap.
this way you end up with not only real wood but seriously nice wood from soft to hardwood creations :)

I make this suggestion simply because you not only seem willing to try new things but also display a fantastic level of learning and execution skills at crafts and such, so I suspect you would be capable of making great use of resources found in such a way, (talk to the cabinet makers you source wood and you will get suggestions too for tons of other stuff you may find useful and a free source is always welcome in like stone for flooring and such.)

FAIL = first attempt in learning. The odd piece of furniture is either a bread box cabinet or a very small secretary desk. The glass over the candle is called a lamp chimney.
My home has always been an odd collection of thrifted, gifted, and homemade furniture. What makes me happy is my living room having large quantities of live plants and the colors of the ocean. I achieved that some years ago. I've also always wanted a kitchen with some substance and character. When, I bought my house it came with original 1950s cabinets and sink. The backsplash and countertops are ceramic tile and the sink is recessed below that tile just enough to make it easy to chase spills right to the sink. It already had both character anf substance. Now, I'm slowly adding decorative touches that make it feel "ethnic" without focusing in on any single country of origin. To achieve this, I'm simply mixing vintage American cookware with decorative pieces from all over the world.
I'm glad you have finally gotten the upgrades you wanted and needed to make your study the inspirational and functional space you deserve.

You lived in the Washington DC area and didn't know about the Society for Creative Anachronism??? You want to live like the middle ages and didn't know about the Barony of Storvik? I'm very surprised. If you saw some of the artefacts that some of the SCAdians have made you'd be very jealous! I'm saying this as a former member. Really, if you want to live in a room with medieval-style accoutrements, talk to SCAdians. They'll burn your ear off with ideas!

I would not be able to decide wether to go for pseudo-medieval, pseudo-renaisance or pseudo-Victorian...

    • @LivingAnachronism
      @LivingAnachronism  11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Well as Living Anachronism, I can say: combine them all. Besides, renaissance built on Medieval trends, Victorian revitalized and built upon both, they all share some similar elements. For me it's not solely about being historically accurate (though I can appreciate that) it's about being surrounded by the things that I like. So I say just put everything together the way you want it, and be happy and prepared to have cool conversations about history if people ask you questions.
