Absolutely beautiful. This is what I call beauty in music. Perfect intonation from the singer, the violin and the tin whistle. Thank you all for sharing your amazing God given gifts and uplifting my spirits.
This is so haunting and heartbreaking... it nearly brings me to tears. I'm not Irish (I have a bit of Scottish blood, and that's as close as I come) but I love Irish folk music; it touches something very deep in me. No one does both pure joy and pure melancholy better than the Irish, and the High Kings are the best I've heard yet.
The language when sung like this is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard, Liam Clancy did a version of this and that always brings tears to my eyes
I am an Indian living in India but my eyes are filled with tears.May be it is because the Gaelic and Sanskrit are from the same language family and both the civilizations are from the Proto-IndoEuropean cultures which has so many things in common including many customs and rituals with the original Celts. Maybe because we are both Tuatha De Danann, the children of the Celtic/Vedic goddess Danu. But this song hits somewhere deep inside.
This is my all time favorite song from the High Kings!!! The first time I heard this song it was a misty morning in the Smoky Mountains of Tennesse and I felt myself transported back to Ireland! Just so evocative, haunting and gorgeous!!!
Holly Sierra: I used to live right by there in TN for many years on a beautiful 10 acre farm. I loved the mountains, the mist and all the green. There's a reason why so many Irish/Scottish settled there.
Had this played at my mam's funeral on the 19 of December 2020, I remember her telling me at Barney Mc Kennas funeral that this music was played at her mother's funeral 35 years prior 💗
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. I may not know you or your mother but I'm sure she was a wonderful person to have such a great song played on that day.
This is absolutely beautiful my father taught me this tune on the mandolin some 38 years ago. Now to hear hear some of the sons of musicians and singers, from all facets of Irish music,I have listened to all my life, this is incedible. A re-resurgence in Irish Folk Music ?
I love The High Kings. I love the traditional way they present these great songs with their own special touch. I will say though that no one ever sang this song more beautifully than Liam Clancy. His honey sweet voice could make you cry from pure joy. Truthfully, I often cried when I heard him sing this song.
music gets no better than this outstanding brought a tear to the eyes of an irishman music of the heart and the soul, i heard the cry of the banshee on the hills
I got totally blindsided by this song. Now, I do love these traditional songs since my mother's side of the family is Irish going way back. But this particular performance by the High Kings knocked me over and turned me inside out. It's absolutely sublime, leaving me with tears in my eyes. May I strongly recommend downloading it as an MP3. The sound quality is absolutely great (very full and detailed) and you really get a sense of the voices and instrumentation.
i am half Irish but was born with the heart of the green fields in me chest and soul of isle in me body i have never been to my home land and one day i hope to it is songs like this and musicians like this that keep the spirit of Ireland alive in those children the left her side to tread on new land the songs remind us of our mother so we may ne'er forget that it was her womb that we came
This talent is just off the charts gorgeous. Those voices are just unbelievable. I think this is what we'll hear if we get to heaven. Work hard to get to heaven.
I saw Liam Clancy at Symphony Hall in Boston about 15 years ago. He sang this and accompanied himself on his small accordion. There were 2500 in attendance and you could have heard a pin drop.
This is one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever listened to. That seamless mix of violin and guitar, and that pennywhistle. I can't even explain how, but it was like being hit with a brick wall, and I started crying my eyes out. I've gotta buy their album, asap. :D
fight for your language irishmen! As you'd say: Tir gan teanga, tir gan anam (hope i got that right :) ) Gaelic is a beautifull language and i am studying it as a hobby and hoping to visit Eire one day :))) respect from Luka from Belgrade, Serbia
A hauntingly beautiful song which captures the spirit of this amazing land of ours, combined with the fact that it is sung in the Irish language and also partly in English, it touches the heart very deeply and I think it will be loved and appreciated by many people from all over the world, both Irish and non-Irish. Congrats to the High Kings for a wonderful, polished and accomplished production by a great Irish music group!!
cad amhrán álainn a dhéanamh áthas dom chun labhairt na hÉireann agus a bheidh le gaeilge what a beautiful song make me glad to speak irish and to be irish

Eeery but brilliant! Songs like this remind me of why im so proud to be irish! It's like the line in the ballad of Ronnie Drew "If your not irish that isnt your fault"! Proud to be Irish! Proud to speak Irish! And proud to contribute to the continuing folklore with beautiful songs like this!
(part 2) But for Ireland I'd not tell her name There is a pretty young maiden On the far side of the farm Generosity and kindness shine in her face With the great beauty of her manners Her hair reaches to the ground And sparkles like yellow gold Her cheeks blush like a rose But for Ireland I'd not tell her name. From a palemirk!

Shimon Rubin Last night as I strolled abroad On the far side of my farm I was approached by a comely maiden Who left me[? 'sinn' = 'us'] distraught and weak. I was captivated by her demeanour and shapeliness By her sensitive and delicate mouth, I hastened to approach her But for Ireland I'd not tell her name. If only this maiden heeded my words, What I'd tell her would be true. Indeed I'd devote myself to her And see to her welfare. I would regale her with my story And I longed to take her to my heart Where I'd grant her pride of place But for Ireland I'd not tell her name.
Liam StClair Thanks a lot. This is a very beautiful love song. But can you explain to me why "for Ireland he cannot tell her name'.Is it also a rebel song? I like so much the Irish folk songs. I think that the High Kings are the best group after the Dubliners. Thanks in advance for an answer to my question.
I'm a big strong hetero guy, but the first time I heard this I cried. I'm a Yank with relatives in county Kilkenny. Several years ago I encountered three big Irish lads while hiking near Lake Tahoe. They asked for directions and I asked them if they had every heard of anyone with my last name in Kilkenny. One of them said, "Yeah, thar's some of them thar." I'll never forget it.
Had never heard the second verse in English before; Liam Clancy would always sing it in Gaelic, but I like it. No matter the language, it's one of my all-time favorite songs. That melody just cuts you to the bone.
The verse in english is actually the first verse of the song, but the lyrics are different... not an exact translation from the Irish. The last words in Irish are "... for Ireland, I'll not tell her name..."
the haunting use of the tin whistle in this song is amazing...glad to know I am not the only one who feels close to tears when hearing it. As an Irish Newfoundlander I must say thess guys are great...sure they aren't a kitchen party band, polished as they are and all but they're grand just the same.
i sleep at night to this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is brea liom an phíosa ag an tús as Gaeilge... Ní raibh fhios agam go raibh gaeilge ah Martin!!!!!!!!! ar an nós go raibh maith agat!!!!!!!!
Love the comment sections in Irish music, on TH-cam. Keep it classy Celts....this is one of the last places that stupidity doesn't run rampant, nor thrive in social media. :)
The fiddler's name is Nollaig Casey. She is well known in Ireland for playing traditional or trad music. Nollaig is a woman's name, but it also means Christmas in the Irish language
Logical Beast: Thank you for your beautiful words! I was born a Murphy, married a Donohue and am proud to be of Irish descent. Though I've never been to Ireland, I feel the Irish very strong in me - we don't put up with BS, maybe that's why you don't see so much stupidity here LOL. We are also survivors and freedom fighters. Yes, I'm proud to be of Irish descent, as was my father, as is my husband. One day I hope to go to Ireland, it's on my bucket list.
Liam Clancy sang this song on one of the early Clancy Brothers albums and these boys do a wonderful job with it. They don't quite have the same "honey" voice of Liam but they do honor to the song.
The only difference between Irish and Scottish is the spelling :) Scottish folk and traditional music is just as evocative and welcomingly glorious as Irish folk and traditional. No wonder it provokes an emotional response within ya :)
this is it in english as well.. Oh last night in strange fields as i roamed Such a vision i passed on my way A young woman so fair to behold That in seconds my heart was astray Oh she reached out a welcoming hand But i knew that it never could be And before i could kiss her sweet lips She had vanished forever from me
@Atyriss95 - It is a "Clare" brand in the key of D. I haven't played one in person, but look up clare d key tin whistle and you will see the same light green coloured mouthpiece and brand sticker on the mouth piece. I thought it was a Waltons d key sweetone (brass) at first or a Feadog, but they have brand stickers on the tin whistle body not the mouth piece.
Nice to see Finbarr Clancy playing the Irish whistle here. He also can play the guitar (of course, as he does in the other High Kings videos), the flute, the electric bass, and the banjo. Although he doesn't do so with the High Kings, there's a clip on TH-cam of him playing the flute while his cousin Robbie O'Connell sings his signature song "Kilkelly" from a 1995 Clancy Brothers and Robbie O'Connell concert in Clonmel.

Im not Irish at all an I'm fascinated with Ireland, culture and tradition....Songs are beautiful for me...
Is Irish music the most beautiful music on Earth? Why, I believe it is! :)
I would agree with you. Gaelic is a beautiful language.
Yes... Divine music
No !
Are you Irish? If so maybe it speaks to your Biospirit.
Irish and Scottish. I love both.
when my time comes to fall asleep for the last time i want this played in my memory thank god i was born an Irish man
The language when sung like this is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard, Liam Clancy did a version of this and that always brings tears to my eyes
That is irish Gaelic
It brings tears to my eyes every single time as well. Liam Clancy is the best singer of all time in my opinion.
I am an Indian living in India but my eyes are filled with tears.May be it is because the Gaelic and Sanskrit are from the same language family and both the civilizations are from the Proto-IndoEuropean cultures which has so many things in common including many customs and rituals with the original Celts. A lot of traditional Irish music definitely takes me back there.

I love these guys so much they make me proud to be Irish, their song the parting glass was played at my Uncles funeral
Just so beautiful, almost as beautiful as my homeland.

What a pedigree! Fair play lads, you all have the voices of Angels!
This song is so beautiful!! And the language......gorgeous.

The Irish shall waste no instrument, not even one as common as the voice...that is the majesty they offer. Well done boys, well done! T-T

Liam StClair Can you translate in English this beautiful song.A fantastic group. Now they are the best performers of the Irish folk songs.
