    Judging from your truck tracks, you might benefit from using a cultipacker after you sow your cover crops. I also wondered why you don’t use a broadcast spreader to get more even coverage? Daddy had a hand cranked spreader he used for small areas. It worked great.

      If I was doing a larger area, I'd probably use a spreader. It would take me longer to go get a spreader than the 5 mins it does to throw it by hand.

    Nice to see someone promoting more than just white or red/crimson clover. I'm actually doing a mix I get from my food plot provider, even mix of crimson, frosty berseem and balansa fixation clover.

      It's seen quite a few people don't ever talk about balansa fixation clover, which hence the name has the highest N fixation @ 200 lbs per acre.

      The data we've seen seems to suggest that N fixation amounts per clover type can vary greatly depending on location and soil type. Our supplier recommended Frosty Berseem over Balansa, but the Balansa does seem like a great choice as well.

    I'm new to cover-cropping, but determined to make it work! What I'd like to know more about is using winter rye alone AND in a cocktail. I have winter rye, red clover, and Bayou kale at the moment...how to mix this? What percentage of each?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go with equal amounts of each and you'll be able to see the progression of each and modify the mixture in the future. Everything requires a little testing to get it just right.

      Collards are one of the most cold-hardy vegetables you'll find.

    I didn't know you could plant a cocktail. I'd like to plant whiskey and ginger ale. If that won't work how about rye and peas or vetch?

      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bulleit bourbon with a splash of ginger ale works very well. So does rye, peas and vetch.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure how the germination would be overseeding, but it should work.

    Notice how good they grew in your tire tracks

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did notice that. They seem to enjoy the soil compaction there.

    I can hear the crows in the background. Do you have a problem with them in your garden? They pull my young corn plants out of the ground. And they strip my fruit and nut trees unless I net them.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don't have issues with them in the garden. We let them have the figs at the top of our big Brown Turkey Fig Tree -- the ones we can't reach.

    Wish I could grow clover here in 9B. Fact is, I can't. Do you have any advice for using clover in my zone?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried White Dutch? That is the most heat-tolerant clover as far as I'm aware.
