I'm 76 years old. I remember Christmases with my four grandparents, my parents, my two older brothers and their wives, and my little sister. My sister is the only one of them still alive. The older you get the more deaths among your family and friends. This song reminded of them all. My wife is still alive but can't walk, moves in a wheelchair and sleeps most of the time. Sometimes she doesn't remember who I am. Old age isn't fun, it's sad.

He knew his time was short, and this was the song to be remembered for all time. The end of this video always hits me pretty hard. When he closes the lid on the piano and wipes it down, it's as if to say "Goodbye". There will never be another Johnny Cash.

You hear this man, who knows hes finally reached the end of his road... and he's so full of regret. Regrets who he's become, who he's been, how things happened. He mourns those he's lost... almost more so not because they're gone but because it took him til the end of his life to realize what's important. Truly... truly an emotional masterpiece in the collection book of Johnny Cash.
He didn't make it a new song, but a new perspective. He took the song and feeling of a young man brooding in thoughts of despair at the person they felt they were and would be and, as an old man at the end of his life, changes the context and therefore feeling to one who is reflecting in despair at a life of regret for having been the person the young man feared he was. It just hits so much harder as a lesson from an old man on his regrets, instead of a young mans fears.

I think the emotional impact is so heavy because we see our own story in this. Differences of course. I'm 65 so I've enjoyed Johnny Cash all my life. I've watched this countless times and still get teary eyed.

June Carter Cash, his 2nd wife is, the woman on stairs; also a singer who toured with him and sang with him on several songs and is the person played by Reese Witherspoon alongside Joaquin Phoenix, in the biopic film of Cash and Carter, Walk the line. She had come over to check on her husband that day as his health was not so good. It was her that Cash attributed to rescuing him from his drug and Alcohol addiction when she married him. June Carter Cash passed away a few months after the video recording in May of 2003 and a bereaved Johnny Cash followed her a few months later in the September. The song is by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and is about his battle with addiction and depression. Cash also an addict and alcoholic for much of his early life spending time in Jail on half a dozen occasions for possession. The song encompasses the way both musicians life threads are woven together and entangled across the decades between them, so much so that Trent when he saw the video said it was like loosing his Girlfriend as the song had become Johnny's. Yeah, the very first time that I had ever heard this song was the Monday night when WWE was paying their tributes to Eddie Guerrero after he had passed away that weekend (so every time I hear this song, I think of Eddie) and I didn’t know until years later that it was a cover originally penned by Rezner, and then when I had found out years later after that it was produced by producing legend Rick Rubin and made me love this song more and more the more I learn about it.
This is the only song that explains my experience with terminal cancer at 34. To hear other people from around the world feel this same gut feeling truly means music can reach others when words fall short. It's the build-up at the end then that last ring of the piano that really hits me hard. I may only have a few months left and I spend them alone. This time last year I was planning to be with my fiancé in the Netherlands for the holidays until I got sick. He had just started his master's degree in mechanical engineering. He couldn't handle the pressure from university and my illness... In May, he choose to stay in Edinhoven and finish his degree. We still talk about every day now but it's not the same. So it's been one hell of time for me. Somehow I'm still holding my head up and going forward. Which reminds me of the song "Only God Knows Why" by Kidd Rock. I'll give that a listen after this.
Very true, but there's also another dimension to the subtext Johnny is singing. He's also speaking of his regrets for all the people he hurt and drove away because of his past behavior. When you approach the end of your life, your regrets for the mistakes you can never take back loom large.

He took this song and made it his forever. There is no shame in the tears. They were rolling down my cheeks the first time I heard this and a number of times after. His life wasn't as bleak as this song portrays when it was recorded, but he had to know he had limited time left. It was his last video.

I think the person that he grieves losing the most in this song is himself, hence the last line, "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself. I would find a way". Such a tragic line.
I'm not sure if that is the intended meaning. I read it as meaning that even if he was given a brand new start, it's so much a part of his nature that he couldn't help but become the same person he despises again - in spite of his best efforts, he would find a way to ruin everything.

I'm an old musician - when I was a kid in the 60's Johnny Cash was a hero, we used to watch his TV show - I recommend you do too - He was a 'Real Man' - and knowing June, his beloved wife, passed away a few months after this video was made - in 2003! and he followed her 3 months later makes this vid easily the saddest and strongest music video ever just makes me cry every time. Seeing you youngsters react like this makes me happy and sad and every little bit in between. There's several reaction vids on YT with young people getting blown away by Hurt. I felt the same when i first heard this song. The lyrics gripped me and the music and videography was perfectly done. I was never a big fan of Johnny Cash's music with the exception of a couple of songs only. But I must say that this song brought me to tears and made me reflect on some of my past, my family, the ups and downs, the fact that you are not in control of all but more importantly, how to look towards the future. When he said" and you could have it all, my empire of dirt" made me think that with all that he has accomplished in his life and career, there's is nothing you can take in the end. What really hits me is that this video/song was his last to be put out, Cash was in vary poor health and died 7 months later. My mother was a drug addict and died from related issues due to over dose and such things. I played this song on my guitar (black) as is the Johnny Cash way, and sang it at her memorial. My father never understood this song until my mothers wake. This work of art hits differently for me. It always gives me goose bumps.

His wife of 35 years...he lived life as a man does and she stayed by him during his transgressions. She witnessed this video and was IN IT. Look in her eyes and she is full of acceptance while he is full of contrition. June Carter Cash, the lovely lady looking down upon her husband, died within weeks of this video being made. Johnny died months after. This video is an epitaph to true love. Now perhaps you can understand the true magnitude of this video. The music is one thing...the meaning is another.

Reese Witherspoon played her as a bit of an angel, but if kind of left out that she was complicated. You don't grow up as part of on act as big as Hank Williams without a few issues.

I think the emotional impact is so heavy because we see our own story in this. Differences of course. I'm 65 so I've enjoyed Johnny Cash all my life. I've watched this countless times and still get teary eyed.
The Johnny Cash video for the single was recorded in February of 2003. June Carter Cash, his 2nd wife is, the woman on stairs; also a singer who toured with him and sang with him on several songs and is the person played by Reese Witherspoon alongside Joaquin Phoenix, in the biopic film of Cash and Carter, Walk the line. She had come over to check on her husband that day as his health was not so good. It was her that Cash attributed to rescuing him from his drug and Alcohol addiction when she married him. June Carter Cash passed away a few months after the video recording in May of 2003 and a bereaved Johnny Cash followed her a few months later in the September.
The song is by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and is about his battle with addiction and depression. Cash also an addict and alcoholic for much of his early life spending time in Jail on half a dozen occasions for possession. The song encompasses the way both musicians life threads are woven together and entangled across the decades between them, so much so that Trent when he saw the video said it was like loosing his Girlfriend as the song had become Johnny's.
Johnny was a campaigner for prison reform and the rights of Native Americans and much of his material reflected his own passions and darker past. Johnny Cash's star declined in the 80s and the Museum to his life with the smashed Gold Disk on the Floor, used as one of the backdrops to the video, ended up being shuttered.
In the 1990s Rick Rubin of American Recordings more of a Rap, Punk and Metal, producer sought out Cash to record on their label, and offered Cash complete artistic freedom. With them his career revived and he brought out a his most critically acclaimed albums, the America series, bringing Cash to a new younger audience starring on The Simpsons and Headlining at Glastonbury in 1994. The 4th and penultimate album of the America series from which this is one of several Hit Singles: American IV: The Man Comes Around, was released in November of 2002 and he was still working on his final Album that was released posthumously.

Yeah, the very first time that I had ever heard this song was the Monday night when WWE was paying their tributes to Eddie Guerrero after he had passed away that weekend (so every time I hear this song, I think of Eddie) and I didn’t know until years later that it was a cover originally penned by Rezner, and then when I had found out years later after that it was produced by producing legend Rick Rubin and made me love this song more and more the more I learn about it.

This is the only song that explains my experience with terminal cancer at 34.
To hear other people from around the world feel this same gut feeling truly means music can reach others when words fall short. It's the build-up at the end then that last ring of the piano that really hits me hard.
I grew up listening to nin and heard this before, but the way Johnny brings that touch of palpable grief, can't be done by no one else.
My daughter passed away from SIDS at 2 months old. I've lost all my grandparents and parents. My dear friends Michael and Jess. Basically, all I had was my sister. We've always been so close... since my cancer diagnosis in November 2022 and then my terminal diagnosis in March, she has been acting differently. In April I found out she is doing drugs.. speed.. when I confronted her she got mad at me and told me to off myself. She was the last person I ever expected to hurt me like that. I may only have a few months left and I spend them alone. This time last year I was planning to be with my fiancé in the Netherlands for the holidays until I got sick. He had just started his master's degree in mechanical engineering. He couldn't handle the pressure from university and my illness... In May, he choose to stay in Edinhoven and finish his degree. We still talk about every day now but it's not the same.
So it's been one hell of time for me. Somehow I'm still holding my head up and going forward. Which reminds me of the song "Only God Knows Why" by Kidd Rock. I'll give that a listen after this.

Very true, but there's also another dimension to the subtext Johnny is singing. He's also speaking of his regrets for all the people he hurt and drove away because of his past behavior. When you approach the end of your life, your regrets for the mistakes you can never take back loom large.

In my opinion, this is the best cover song ever written. When the original artist states publicly that this song is no longer his, you know that the cover artist nailed it.
He took this song and made it his forever. There is no shame in the tears. They were rolling down my cheeks the first time I heard this and a number of times after. His life wasn't as bleak as this song portrays when it was recorded, but he had to know he had limited time left. It was his last video.

I think the person that he grieves losing the most in this song is himself, hence the last line, "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself. I would find a way". Such a tragic line.

It's a rare song that one can never walk away from after it has found you, it just will never leave. This is one of those songs. It seeks out every crevasse of self-hatred, shame, and regret in your soul, solidifies in those areas, and becomes forever a part of you.
I'm an old musician - when I was a kid in the 60's Johnny Cash was a hero, we used to watch his TV show - I recommend you do too - He was a 'Real Man' - and knowing June, his beloved wife, passed away a few months after this video was made - in 2003! and he followed her 3 months later makes this vid easily the saddest and strongest music video ever just makes me cry every time. Seeing you youngsters react like this makes me happy and sad and every little bit in between. There's several reaction vids on YT with young people getting blown away by Hurt. So for me its heartening knowing you'll know Johnny Cash now too.

They are also from another country, maybe even one without the same access you may have had the first time you heard the song. Every part of the world is different. I felt the same when i first heard this song. The lyrics gripped me and the music and videography was perfectly done. I was never a big fan of Johnny Cash's music with the exception of a couple of songs only. But I must say that this song brought me to tears and made me reflect on some of my past, my family, the ups and downs, the fact that you are not in control of all but more importantly, how to look towards the future. When he said" and you could have it all, my empire of dirt" made me think that with all that he has accomplished in his life and career, there's is nothing you can take in the end. Love who you are, enjoy what you have and be grateful for those who you care about and care for you. Yep. Everyone goes away in the end. I lost my mom to Azheimer's. I lost my dad to cancer. I lost my cousin to cancer. I lost my uncle to cancer. I lost my sister to cancer. At some point in your life, you begin to see how fragile your life is. Johnny Cash certainly understood that too.

He was original gangsta in the truest sense of the word: defiant, badass, and had zero f*cks to give. And yet, at the end - staring death in the face - with all those moments from his life flashing before our eyes through this video - just a man. Devastating.

What really hits me is that this video/song was his last to be put out, Cash was in vary poor health and died 7 months later.
When I hear this song I hear him saying how he would give everything to be with the ones he lost, to have more time here, to do things over and that he regrets that he's going to fail those he loves and hurt them because one day he will die and have to leave them.
One of his daughters said 'It's like you are saying goodbye' and Cash replied, "I am."

My mother was a drug addict and died from related issues due to over dose and such things. I played this song on my guitar (black) as is the Johnny Cash way, and sang it at her memorial. My father never understood this song until my mothers wake. This work of art hits differently for me. It always gives me goose bumps.

Johnny Cash had done covers before in his later years and this song was offered. Neither Trent nor Johnny was keen to the idea at first.
Now I will make you cry...June Carter Cash is in the video. His wife of 35 years...he lived life as a man does and she stayed by him during his transgressions. She witnessed this video and was IN IT. Look in her eyes and she is full of acceptance while he is full of contrition.
June Carter Cash, the lovely lady looking down upon her husband, died within weeks of this video being made. Johnny died months after. This video is an epitaph to true love.

I’m getting up in years and been a Johnny Cash fan since I was a kid in the 60’s. I’ve lost so many friends, family and my beloved wife. Still have a few friends, very few, and my lovely daughter who actually saved me from cancer. I have lived a full and adventurous life. I’m tired now and I’m ready.😢
