I'm 76 years old. I remember Christmases with my four grandparents, my parents, my two older brothers and their wives, and my little sister. My sister is the only one of them still alive. The older you get the more deaths among your family and friends. This song reminded of them all. My wife is still alive but can't walk, moves in a wheelchair and sleeps most of the time. Sometimes she doesn't remember who I am. Old age isn't fun, it's sad.

Truly... truly an emotional masterpiece in the collection book of Johnny Cash.
He didn't make it a new song, but a new perspective. He took the song and feeling of a young man brooding in thoughts of despair at the person they felt they were and would be and, as an old man at the end of his life, changes the context and therefore feeling to one who is reflecting in despair at a life of regret for having been the person the young man feared he was. It just hits so much harder as a lesson from an old man on his regrets, instead of a young mans fears.

Yeah, the very first time that I had ever heard this song was the Monday night when WWE was paying their tributes to Eddie Guerrero after he had passed away that weekend (so every time I hear this song, I think of Eddie) and I didn’t know until years later that it was a cover originally penned by Rezner, and then when I had found out years later after that it was produced by producing legend Rick Rubin and made me love this song more and more the more I learn about it.

Very true, but there's also another dimension to the subtext Johnny is singing. He's also speaking of his regrets for all the people he hurt and drove away because of his past behavior. When you approach the end of your life, your regrets for the mistakes you can never take back loom large.

I felt the same when i first heard this song. The lyrics gripped me and the music and videography was perfectly done. I was never a big fan of Johnny Cash's music with the exception of a couple of songs only. But I must say that this song brought me to tears and made me reflect on some of my past, my family, the ups and downs, the fact that you are not in control of all but more importantly, how to look towards the future. When he said" and you could have it all, my empire of dirt" made me think that with all that he has accomplished in his life and career, there's is nothing you can take in the end. This is the only song that explains my experience with terminal cancer at 34. To hear other people from around the world feel this same gut feeling truly means music can reach others when words fall short. It's the build-up at the end then that last ring of the piano that really hits me hard. I grew up listening to nin and heard this before, but the way Johnny brings that touch of palpable grief, can't be done by no one else.
My daughter passed away from SIDS at 2 months old. I've lost all my grandparents and parents. My dear friends Michael and Jess. Basically, all I had was my sister. We've always been so close... since my cancer diagnosis in November 2022 and then my terminal diagnosis in March, she has been acting differently. In April I found out she is doing drugs.. speed.. when I confronted her she got mad at me and told me to off myself. She was the last person I ever expected to hurt me like that. I may only have a few months left and I spend them alone. This time last year I was planning to be with my fiancé in the Netherlands for the holidays until I got sick. He had just started his master's degree in mechanical engineering. He couldn't handle the pressure from university and my illness... In May, he choose to stay in Edinhoven and finish his degree. We still talk about every day now but it's not the same. So it's been one hell of time for me. Somehow I'm still holding my head up and going forward. Which reminds me of the song "Only God Knows Why" by Kidd Rock. I'll give that a listen after this.

What really hits me is that this video/song was his last to be put out, Cash was in vary poor health and died 7 months later. When I hear this song I hear him saying how he would give everything to be with the ones he lost, to have more time here, to do things over and that he regrets that he's going to fail those he loves and hurt them because one day he will die and have to leave them.

I’m getting up in years and been a Johnny Cash fan since I was a kid in the 60’s. I’ve lost so many friends, family and my beloved wife. Still have a few friends, very few, and my lovely daughter who actually saved me from cancer. I have lived a full and adventurous life. I’m tired now and I’m ready.😢
My mother was a drug addict and died from related issues due to over dose and such things. I played this song on my guitar (black) as is the Johnny Cash way, and sang it at her memorial. My father never understood this song until my mothers wake. This work of art hits differently for me. It always gives me goose bumps.

Yep. Everyone goes away in the end. I lost my mom to Azheimer's. I lost my dad to cancer. I lost my cousin to cancer. I lost my uncle to cancer. I lost my sister to cancer. At some point in your life, you begin to see how fragile your life is. Johnny Cash certainly understood that too.

Yeah, the very first time that I had ever heard this song was the Monday night when WWE was paying their tributes to Eddie Guerrero after he had passed away that weekend (so every time I hear this song, I think of Eddie) and I didn’t know until years later that it was a cover originally penned by Rezner, and then when I had found out years later after that it was produced by producing legend Rick Rubin and made me love this song more and more the more I learn about it.

I think the emotional impact is so heavy because we see our own story in this. Differences of course. I'm 65 so I've enjoyed Johnny Cash all my life. I've watched this countless times and still get teary eyed.

He took this song and made it his forever. There is no shame in the tears. They were rolling down my cheeks the first time I heard this and a number of times after. His life wasn't as bleak as this song portrays when it was recorded, but he had to know he had limited time left. It was his last video.

I felt the same when i first heard this song. The lyrics gripped me and the music and videography was perfectly done. I was never a big fan of Johnny Cash's music with the exception of a couple of songs only. But I must say that this song brought me to tears and made me reflect on some of my past, my family, the ups and downs, the fact that you are not in control of all but more importantly, how to look towards the future. When he said" and you could have it all, my empire of dirt" made me think that with all that he has accomplished in his life and career, there's is nothing you can take in the end. Love who you are, enjoy what you have and be grateful for those who you care about and care for you. Thank you to Johnny Cash, this amazing version of "Hurt" and for allowing us all to get a glimpse into his world.

I grew up listening to nin and heard this before, but the way Johnny brings that touch of palpable grief, can't be done by no one else.
My daughter passed away from SIDS at 2 months old. I've lost all my grandparents and parents. My dear friends Michael and Jess. Basically, all I had was my sister. We've always been so close... since my cancer diagnosis in November 2022 and then my terminal diagnosis in March, she has been acting differently. In April I found out she is doing drugs.. speed.. when I confronted her she got mad at me and told me to off myself. She was the last person I ever expected to hurt me like that. I may only have a few months left and I spend them alone. This time last year I was planning to be with my fiancé in the Netherlands for the holidays until I got sick. He had just started his master's degree in mechanical engineering. He couldn't handle the pressure from university and my illness... In May, he choose to stay in Edinhoven and finish his degree. We still talk about every day now but it's not the same.
So it's been one hell of time for me. Somehow I'm still holding my head up and going forward. Which reminds me of the song "Only God Knows Why" by Kidd Rock. I'll give that a listen after this.

What really hits me is that this video/song was his last to be put out, Cash was in vary poor health and died 7 months later.
When I hear this song I hear him saying how he would give everything to be with the ones he lost, to have more time here, to do things over and that he regrets that he's going to fail those he loves and hurt them because one day he will die and have to leave them.
One of his daughters said 'It's like you are saying goodbye' and Cash replied, "I am."

I’m getting up in years and been a Johnny Cash fan since I was a kid in the 60’s. I’ve lost so many friends, family and my beloved wife. Still have a few friends, very few, and my lovely daughter who actually saved me from cancer. I have lived a full and adventurous life. I’m tired now and I’m ready.😢
My mother was a drug addict and died from related issues due to over dose and such things. I played this song on my guitar (black) as is the Johnny Cash way, and sang it at her memorial. My father never understood this song until my mothers wake. This work of art hits differently for me. It always gives me goose bumps.

Yep. Everyone goes away in the end. I lost my mom to Azheimer's. I lost my dad to cancer. I lost my cousin to cancer. I lost my uncle to cancer. I lost my sister to cancer. At some point in your life, you begin to see how fragile your life is. Johnny Cash certainly understood that too.
