I am a junior in college and I only work in the summer. I just signed up and filled out everything to file using Dave's SmartTax. While it was very easy to use, it does NOT cost $17 to file. It was trying to charge me $50. That may not be bad for some people, but as a college student who barely is getting a refund, $50 is over a 3rd of my return total. This is completely out of my monthly budget. I'll stick to using other websites... Also, Dave, if you're reading this, please consider a student discount/waiver. Thank you!
I look forward to doing my taxes every year. I’m what’s known as a “super-nerd”. It’s almost like a game seeing how close I can get to a $0 refund/bill. Anything less than $100 in either direction is a win in my book.
I pay a bit more than that where I file, but it's with a local individual who has their own business. They actually do their business in a side room of the local post office where they work. So while I am spending more, my money is going to someone in my local community.

I'm always amazed that ordinary Americans have to do their own taxes returns each year. As a PAYE worker here in Ireland it's so simple, takes about 20 minutes and you have your tax back in a few days
Taxes really aren't that complicated for most normal people. I can do mine in under 15 minutes every single year. Where you get into the complications is if you itemize all your deductions.
H&R block is way more free than TurboTax, if you get to claim student loan interest up to $2,500, TT says that it makes your return complicated and you need to pay, but H&R says it isn't and will let you file for free.

Unfortunately the Rona happened, and the IRS still has not processed my 2019 paper return filed in July 2020, has not paid me my refund, and so far has no record of my return. Which in turn effectively prevents me from filing my 2020 return early.
Dave says a lot of things that are just flat out wrong. The parent company of Turbotax, Intuit, bought creditkarma but they were unable to buy the creditkarma's tax division which was then sold off to Square/CashApp.
This is why debt pushers can come off as loan sharks. Just stay away from debt people and who won't have to discern who is trying to loan you money and who is trying to put a bounty on you.
Turbo tax almost never charges $0 unless you have an incredibly simple return. If you have a simple return, that's fine, but otherwise you are paying too much.

What confuses me the most is how so many people will hoot and holler about which politician got elected yet those same people would rather do their own taxes instead of using a tax professional who can save them money.
Tell me about it. My wife and I filed with H&RBlock the first year we had our baby and for some weird reason we went from paying $150 to $425 for simple tax filling. Never going back.
I wish he would offer a little more clarity on what the software can do. I have the knowledge on how to file with a shedule C I just need to know if the software can do it. I did send a question to them so hopefully find out Monday.

Question does this system ACTUALY send copies of the tax documents with the return? I have for years had issues with E-File where I get letters from the state (both back in NY when I lived there and nor in OR where i currently live saing i need to send them copies of my tax documents after having completed the E-File because they were not electronically sent? This is a huge hasste to me due to my work schedule and would prefer to AVOID this this year. Was considering walking into a tax preparer office to have them do it in person to get arround this this year.
We have been using a Ramsey recommended ELP. They are not cheap since we have a pretty complicated return... It is gonna deplete our emergency fund that is for sure...sigh

@@markmont5595 I forgot to withhold taxes from mine so I owed, but if you got $540 then $60 was withheld. You'll be fine. Go check your tax form. It should show an amount for "federal tax witheld"
Ramsey smart tax uses taxslayer, which sucks. FreeTaxUSA is what I use and I'm a tax accountant. Free tax USA cost $15 to file, and if you need the expert help, it's only $6 extra. Don't let the price fool you, this is a far superior product to TurboTax and Tax Slayer.

No i love getting my money back.i use it as a forced savings account Never had a problem with T.T. now the bank hates it because it all goes to the mortgage principle payment, same as the stimulus checks. You would save more in interest if you cut your withholding and pay extra monthly instead of waiting several months after the end of the year to make a single payment. However, if you are younger than 50 or so, you'd be better served putting that extra in a Roth IRA or your 401k . If you are older and reyo.g to get your mortgage paid off by retirement,.keep going in that direction. Dave gives cookie cutter advice that isn't always the best advice.

This is an ad where Ramsey intentionally doesn't tell you that you can file for free with the IRS if you make under like $75k per year so he can sell his product. Ramsey cares about you no more than any other salesman. Always remember that.

I have done my own taxes for 48 years - on paper. Will do so again this year. That included 2 years that I transferred across state lines.

For simple returns you can use any other free software out there....even local colleges do free taxes for simple forms.

Tax slayer was very good to me. I have since stopped using it because I'm in trucking.
