BMW E89 Z4 Android Screen - Apple Carplay and Android Auto Add-On

- A short video on the integration of Apple Carplay and Android Auto into the Android touchscreen for the BMW E89 Z4.
You need an .apk for the software to run on the Android system, most sellers of the dongle will either supply you with it or a link to obtain it yourself. The .apk I'm running is for ZBOX, I tried most of the others available and they just didn't work, but the ZBOX works fine except for the Android Auto screen resolution.
This is why I went for "Headunit Reloaded" from Google Play Store. It costs £5.49 but certainly works very well indeed.

Hi. Thanks for the video. Sorry if I have missed something. Is this the standard Z4 head unit or have you brought a separate one? If it is aftermarket, what model did you buy? Considering a second-hand Z4 purchase, and have stumbled on your channel.
@RickinHKG It's a standard headunit with the additional Android screen added in place of the dash top cubby hole. It's all plug-n-play and I've detailed the fitting on one of my other videos.

This is awesome, no more clunky OEM multimedia/nav. I would love to see if it is possible to reprogram steeringwheel buttons to act as cruise control. Thats my only subject since you already made this video =)
Z4 Mod - my son installed this setup last year on his E89. Do you have any recommendations for an aftermarket amplifier to make the system louder (tough to hear when the top is down)?
Are you planning to add Adaptive Cruise control? My wife car does have cruise control but we like the adaptive cruise control because it just so convenient in driving.
No, it'll be Cruise Control with Braking (which was the option for the e89). I actually already have it but I'm swapping my stalks over so will do the full How-To video at the same time.

Questions though:
1. does the idrive controller still work?
2. Did you need to get an upgraded idrive controller too or the default one works fine?
3. Where did you get the screen + unit? (looking only for apple carplay, not android auto)
4. Does the rest of the BMW apps still work? like BMW's nav, connectedDrive, vehicle settings, messages/notifications, servicing, etc?

If you currently have iDrive then your controller will work just the same. You'll still have all the original functions as you do now as this screen just acts as a screen for that part (ie; non touchscreen for original functions, just controller and steering wheel buttons)

Hopefully next video will be how to install a reversing camera to add into this unit.

Just a quick question: how would the installing bit go for a car with already the iDrive system in it? Do I still remove all the dash like you did? Won’t there be more wires or a different way of removing the top part?
Also, are you selling these products or just bought them online and liked them? I’m in the uk too and am wondering if you would install it too in other cars or just showing off the stuff you’ve done in your own car
In short you have to remove everything as in the other video, the only difference between iDrive and non-iDrive cars is the screen and the LDVS (video input) cable but that's just one more plug into the new screen. All screw points and fixings are the same for both.

Wow its amazing
The latest beta version of Head Unit Reloaded found on XDA Labs eliminates the "squashed" screen look in AA. Set the resolution to the highest setting and adjust the DPI (I think mine is set at 275 for a 10.25 screen) and it looks perfect. I've been using it for about a month now with no issues.

OME System is limited, however your system seems to offer far more options, movies, navigation, rear camera integration, etc. Where can I get one of those? Hi. I have the stock screen on my 2011 e89. As most of you know, it opens/closes whenever the car is turned on or off. Suddenly today it just stopped doing that. It stayed open when I turned the car off, and the screen went blank (off). When I turned the car back on, the screen turned on and everything is working normally, but it just doesn't open or close anymore. Any advice? thanks!
Sounds like the motor has gone faulty.
So you could fit this screen, or buy a used unit from Ebay, they sell for around £$250 to £$400.
Personally if I had the oem iDrive I'd retain the folding screen and fit this ...

What resolution does your screen have? Mine hast 1280x480 and while using Headunit Reloaded Android Auto seams to be streched. Could you please share your HUR resolution and DPI settings? That would be great. Thanks a lot an best regards.

Resolution - 1280 x 720
I'm running the latest update from the Play Store as well (two updates ago it sorted the stretch out)

Ok, I know found out the issue I had. For testing I just installed the Trial-Version of HUR. This seems to be the older version. With the full-version everything works fine!

In this form it is not compatible. This is an Android add-on screen and not OEM BMW.There are ways of having Carplay with an OEM BMW, take a look at this site.... www.bimmer-tech.net/blog/item/49-how-to-retrofit-carplay

Hi Gary, I'd love to but to get hold of the parts, here in the UK, you are looking in the region of £600+ for the (used) parts and as I'm a self-funded channel (no Patreon etc)I have to justify everything I do. Alas I simply cannot justify it currently.
I know how to undertake the retrofit and have the coding info for it, so I am still keeping an eye out and will buy the parts if I can come across bargains but that's not looking any time soon.

Up to the point I removed it, it was absolutely fine. No issues with it at all, and did exactly what I wanted from it.
If you look through my videos you'll notice that I retrofitted full OE iDrive. This wasn't a reflection on the Android screen, but because I wanted to fit the iDrive.
I've fitted quite a few for other owners, all of which were happy with it, including the person I sold my old one to, of which I fitted for him.
Is the apple car play dongle just wired or is it wireless as well?
Does siri still work and do I need a microphone? My car currently has a microphone but I'm just wondering if this android screen or apple dongle will need a separate microphone
Hi Chris, the dongle I've got is a wired only one but you can now get a wireless version as well (you can also get them built into the latest screens).
Yes Siri works (as does "Hey Google" for Android Auto), there is a built-in microphone on the left side edge of the screen and as mine is a right hand drive it picks my voice up fine. You can install a separate microphone if you wish though.

So it just needs setting up once and after that, I can just get in my car, plug in my phone, start the car and apple carplay will come up on the screen. Or do I need to start the car first? Do I need to click any more buttons open any apps first?

Key in and start the car as normal.
Open the on screen music player and press the top right return button (the symbol is the return arrow). This gives you full steering wheel buttoncontrol.
Now plug your phone in.
Navigate to the apps page and open the app for CarPlay (this app should come as an apk file with the dongle, but may be a downloadable link).
Once the app is open itll recognise the iPhone and open up in CarPlay mode.
You can open the app without the phone connected to adjust some settings (right or left hand drive etc)

Hi boss! I have bought android radio for my z4 e89. It arrives to me this Monday. I have also bought the CarPlay wireless. my doubt: does that radio have a USB port? If not, how did you get the usb port? thanks friend!
Dont worry it comes with 2 USB ports (as you can see in this video and also in my installation video) so you'll be fine.

Did you try Android Auto in 1080p mode? It's in the developer settings.
Yes the phone is set correctly. I'm going to do an update to this video once I get a chance with more options for streaming audio.

Hello again! I already have everything installed in my car. but the idrive, I don't know if it has arrived faulty, sometimes it doesn't respond. the same thing happens to you? and another doubt. there are times when you need to use the touch screen to move to another section. since the roulette works to move through the selected menu, but the roulette does not move left, right, up or down. (the 4 arrows that have the most modern idrives) does the same happen to you? Thank you!

Firstly when it comes to fitting the iDrive controller you may have to modify it a little bit for the screw points to work better (I'm told they haven't changed the design since the first ones that came out!).
Yes every now and again I have to give my rotary controller a second press to activate it, no big problem really, but just a second press, slightly firmer then the first normally does the trick.
As for Left, Right, Up & Down, it doesn't work and has not been designed to work that way. It is rotary and press ONLY. You stand a chance of damaging the controller if you do.
Also, as a side note, I've seen the modern larger controller knobs available that fit over the OEM iDrive controller, these WILL NOT work on these controllers.... Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone wanted to know.
BMW Z4 Mods I thank you very much for your answer. I actually had to tweak the idrive controller a bit to fit the console. Another problem that I have noticed is that the original bluetooth of bmw is lost. and the microphone. since once the radio is installed, you will use the radio interface and the integrated microphone 😐. now I have problems with the sound of the radio small sounds are heard from time to time "pa" and at the moment, I have not managed to know why. The CarPlay dongle is just a generic one from ebay, although there are wireless versions available now.

However, the iDrive controller does not seem to work for Apple Car Play. Is there a way to enable this?

There is a work-around....
Key in ignition, unit starts up.
Press ' Music' player.
Open 'Open Apps' - overlapping rectangles, top right of screen.
Slide upwards slightly so that the Music app is visible, then slide this to the right of the screen.
This will close the music player.
Now open CarPlay and the steering wheel buttons will work.
It sounds a little drawn out but you soon get used to it and it only takes a few seconds to perform.

Depends on your country, there a couple of companies that sell it in mainland Europe, at least one in the UK and I'm told AVINUSA sell them in the US (but I haven't found it on their site yet). Otherwise it's eBay or some site like Aliexpress, just Google "BMW e89 Android screen" and you'll find loads.
And you want to be looking for Andriod 9, with a minimum 6 core processor (I believe they are actually making 8 core processor ones now), and with at least 4gb ram. If you want the iDrive controller make sure it's included as well.
It will show any car alarm like old screen ?
If you currently have IDrive then you have all of the original features as well as the new ones. If you don't have iDrive then you won't have original features only the Android screen new ones.
Check my other video out where I show how to install it, towards the end I show the features of the screen.

Can you use the knob or the steering wheel to control carplays feetures?
Once set up you car use the steering wheel controls for changing tracks etc. Changing apps is via the touchscreen

It's a quick work-around.....
Put key in to turn unit on.
Open the built-in Music Player.
Once music starts press the Return button top right of screen.
This should stop the Music Player.
You can now use the steering wheel buttons.
This works on the new updated version. For the original version you can try the above steps but if the Return button doesn't work the instead of pressing that just press the Open Apps button (2 overlapping rectangles, top right of screen) then the Music app will be the last app.
Swipe this to the right to close it and the music will stop. You can now use the steering wheel buttons.
This us only required for added on apps like Spotify, Apple Music, CarPlay etc.

Screen can move on the down like oem screen?
No this is a fixed position screen.
You are a genius! I have a 2011 e89 3.5isdrive. The screen that pops up is about to break. It gets lazy. When it pops up it works , I hear grinding of plastic parts then catches and have radio again.
Will this work as well with my car? I don’t care if screen is permanent like yours. I’m changing Bc breaking not Bc want the upgrade. Dealer wants 3k to change radio. Thanks! Car looks great. Love my landshark.
Ok well you have a couple of options here.....
1) Fit a replacement screen, you can pick them up from ebay from around $/£250. They'll be a straight swap over for the old one, no coding required. You do not need to change the radio unit or anything else.
2) Buy and fit the Android screen. Again no coding is required and is a straight replacement, but yes you will loose the folding of the OEM one. You would gain all the abilities of the Android device and it would be more modern than the OEM version.

@@attock76 have you installed the software (ZBox)?
For some reason it won't auto-start the software you need to go to "apps" and open the ZBox app then it should first recognize the box and then the phone.

Looks really rough. The tablet has thick bezels and low resolution and the animations are also jerky. The OEM iDrive is miles ahead.
Sorry but I don't see where you're coming from. "Looks really rough", it's a well designed and well put together add-on for the e89. It's not a tablet, it's a proper display touchscreen. "Animations are also jerky" cant say I've noticed while I've been using mine for the last two weeks. Do you have one? Have you actually seen one?
This can do everything that the OEM iDrive can do (that's because if you currently have iDrive then all of your features would go through this screen) and the OEM iDrive does nothing that this can, this HD screen is miles ahead of the old CIC system.
This loud music sucks.
