    I spent 3 months in Honolulu this time last year and watching this video brought tears to my eyes because I miss it there. I visited all the places you were at and loved it. Definitely going back again

    Hilton Hawaiian Village used to be so nice… it’s actually it’s not owned by Hilton anymore but by a different Asian hotel group. I used to love it there when we visited as children. The location is still beautiful and there still is a lot to do. Great vid Steve!

      I agree. Lived very close to the Rainbow back in the day. Hilton Hawaiian Village seemed large then, now it’s just ginormous. But if you have little kids, this is a great place as any.

    When 'Rocky' Aoki (founder of Benihana of Tokyo) passed away, his family changed it from Benihana of Tokyo to using the family name, hence Aoki Teppanyaki. The name change was about 3-4 years ago when the whole Aoki family came to celebrate the new name at their HHV location. His sons (one is the Pres/CEO) both trained at the HHV Benihana outlet.

    Oh and the Ala Moana mall used to be a normal sized mall when I was a kid, but they expanded it like crazy. It’s confusing because they could only expand in area on the outside, so there’s almost an inner mall with strip mall shops on the exterior. Don’t get me started on how the International Marketplace completely changed from what it was originally.

    • @ric44n
      @ric44n ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I like the old international marketplace much better. The new one is nicer for sure but I am getting old, and old people long for the good old days😢

    • @shadowm3ld
      @shadowm3ld ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ric44n I agree… something about the old market was very old school Hawaii. Of course the new “market” is basically a luxury mall compared to those old stands that sold trinkets. But it had a great night market feel and energy that is completely gone. Lots of families lost their livelihood… sad

    Correction on Ala Moana Center: it IS the largest outdoor shopping center in the WORLD (not just the US).

  • @RodSwansmad
    @RodSwansmad ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great Waikiki ,China Town,Ala Moana Centre walk around but more importantly , your great taste in your “shirts” Did you get your your shirts in Hawaii ? And what brands are they ? The shirt your wore to the Rock A Hula really caught my eye ! (love to know where you got that shirt) I will be definitely getting a few shirts from Kahala, Tommy Bahama , Tori Richards 🤙🤙🤙

    • @hawaiiguy1
      @hawaiiguy1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rod: ok on Kahala and Tori Richard brands as they are authentic 'Aloha Shirts' (we don't call it 'Hawaiian Shirts' like how outsiders call it) along with being local brands. Tommy Bahama is not local but they try to replicate the 'tropical' taste/mood/style in their shirts.

    • @RodSwansmad
      @RodSwansmad ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hawaiiguy1 When I was in NewYork in 2015 , the TommyBahama shirts caught my eye ! Good quality and a little expensive. But on that same trip when I got to Oahu , TommyBahama were at the outlet centre , couldn’t resist getting a few shirts because they were nearly half the price I seen in NewYork.

    • @RodSwansmad
      @RodSwansmad ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hawaiiguy1 By the way , if you come to Australia, we don’t call Aloha Shirts , Aloha Shirts .. We call them Hawaiian Shirts here. If you said Aloha shirt here , no one would know what you are talking about. Not taking anything away from how it is there but its what they are called here 🤙

    Correct pronunciation of Honolulu:
    hoe (like the garden tool) - kno- lou- lou. There is NO 'a' in the word. Mahalo for coming to Oahu 🤙

    hawaiian air hostess use coconut perfume - don't like it
    the gift stores sell the same things - don't like it
    pine apple shape short bread - love it - taste better than the same things sold in las vegas - somehow fresher
    food - nothing special - charsui in chinatown was best - they hang it like any where on earth - san francisco, hongkong, singapore unlike los angeles - soak in syrup n dry n taste boil not bbq
    no fragrant or tasty flowers n fruits like in asia - all like in usa - only colors no fragrance or taste
    locals in supermarkets like phillippinos are angry n unfriendly looking ???
    -----------
    worst noodle i had in the world is in japan noodle museum - the bowl are giant so we want to share n they won't let us so we order 2 n it's not good so we left the whole 2 bowls untouch n just left - the place smell old n wet n kind of scary - the only mean japanese we seen in the whole of japan or anywhere else - all the other japanese are so friendly n polite - we ask them where sth is - they don't give u direction or point - they leave their shop n walk u there - love them - n they don't fear people will shop lift their goods - my mom's oldest bro live there - he said in disaster he lost is wallet - people hunt him down to give him back not like in usa u saw on tv afro latino looting the stores - latino carry whole giant sofa on head n run - on tv - how do they do that n i saw with my own eyes some latin woman just plug a gardenia plant n walk away - in nordstrom they took whole rack of expensive purses n dash out the door - they caught them in the parking lot - for a split second everyone just look at the rack flying out the door - so shock no one move - really love that hotel with convenient store like 7eleven attach to it sharing a side door - only in japan - at night just walk down n get snacks n not like boring 7eleven in la - they got rice ball n if in taiwan n hongkong they got tea eggs ...
    hate pandemic n malaysian air - since then don't travel any more
    hate peloci war n fauci virus - such people make life miserable
    malaysian govt need to be punish - a few days before that - muslims were angry with china n u load a plane full of chinese n let a muslim flew it? he suicide the whole plane - pilot plane choices should be available - posted - passenger's life should be protected - u r antidiscrimination laws are not as important as lives - plane 10yrs n under n non muslim pilot ... don't worry - lots of muslims to take those planes - until safety is good - boycotting travel
    -----------
    don't like japan airport restaurants but love the fish mkt - the yr we were there was the last yr of that mkt - after that they closed it down or sth - didn't follow the news - try to find same in hawaii - no
    -----------
    is there a chain hotel safe from volcano n tsunami? the one we stay was next to the biggest souvinier mkt - all stores sell the same things - we went to a swap meet - took long bus ride - bought lots of fridge magnet u see no where else n pearl on the shell - fun - will visit hawaii again? maybe retire there
