First play this weekend. My only grip was the setup and the clarity on the bonus tiles. Outside of that this game was phenomenal. My friends picked it right up and we had a blast
Great review! And as you suggested the set collection bit of the game is a direct shout-out to the Tony Hawk titles - smashing crates, grinding school bells and picking up spray cans...
Thanks for the review Dice Tower, helped convince me to get the game for myself. I do think you might have gotten a rule wrong somewhere though, although I'm not sure where, but the special trick cards are not as hard to get as you made it seem. In my playthroughs I'd usually get one per turn, sometimes two after upgrading the related part of my board. The special tricks are critical for using the revert ramps in the last few turns of the game to collect SKATER in time.
I agree that it seems a little fiddly and the look of the board is almost overwhelming, but the idea of balancing your board with the cards you play is a great thematic mechanism.
How would you estimate the skill to luck ratio? I see there is some luck but I'm curious how much the luck can be mitigated with proper play. When I play games, I want the better player to generally win.
Just beginning to watch but wow, first overwhelming impression is that's a *lot* of super tiny tokens all over the place that are hard to see because everything's the same sort of color. I'm visually confused but am curious to continue watching. Really like this review format tho!!
Grunge rock, skating (poorly), and playing videogames were how I spent the early/mid 90s, so I'm pretty stoked for this game and was surprised the campaign didn't do better. I'm glad I backed and am looking forward to the Deluxe version with minis and those nice transparent Pandasaurus tokens.
Really want to play this. Tipped off by Mike and Dan in conversation and headed straight over to see this review. Love the theme - not something I'd ever go for but makes a welcome change. Looks interesting and psyched to get this to the table once it lands in the UK shops.
Great review, this game kinda reminds me of marvel legendary’s combo mechanics with a bit of clank thrown in there, but it isn’t a deck builder. This game would highly HIGHLY benefit from an upgrade kit to not make it as busy with all the same looking tokens.
I can't wait for my KS for this to arrive! I back things that I think I'll like, not what I think will be critical darlings, but it's always nice to see that something you went in for is picking up fans and is actually a great game. I've already started putting together my playlist of essential songs from THPS1-Tony Hawk's Proving Ground (along with select tracks from the Matt Hoffman and Dave Mirra games).
Played a demo at Gencon and it was probably the lowest point of the entire convention for me. The game is just far too punishing for complete randomness, it's more "hope you drew usable cards" than any type of push your luck. One player drew well every round, landed 4+ tricks ever time and the game ended in I believe 5 rounds with noone even having a chance to pick up items on the board except I think 2 that got picked up on the very last turn. If you bail you lose half your flame markers, you lose the free level up, and you lose your card which loses you board movement and VP on the track. So you are being punished 4 different ways for a dice roll that can benefit someone else just as much. Someone who gets out 5 tricks in the first round is also probably getting both a super trick and a skater upgrade above you, and there's no coming back from a deficit that big in this game.
On the overview part, I dont understand why Camila was teaching how to setup the game... Just give me an overview... I am not gonna learn how to play here.
They said it in the review, they're kind of integral to the game. How are you going to understand their setup concerns without seeing how fiddly the setup is. They also mentioned how everything has a dual purpose. So talking about removing tokens and balancing would make no sense contextually without seeing the board setup.
This is the worst game I played at Gencon by far. Theme is great, played a lot of Tony Hank's PS back in the day. Everything else is soo underwhelming.
Your audio levels are a real rollercoaster. The intro blasts you in the face, then volume dips and raises through the rest of the video.
Otherwise, very enjoyable
came here to say exactly this
If multiple reviewers per review are going to be the new norm, I am very much on board
On board! Hah!
The 3 stooges 🤭
Yes. I enjoy the discussion!
The audio on the how to play portion was super quiet - the audio almost dropped off in some spots

My wife worked Gencon for Pandasaurus so we got a copy of this. Now I'm super looking forward to checking it out!
Every video I watch on this channel has a different intro, I love it!
The spray cAns and school bells are both things you collect in Tony hawk.
The playthrough on the summer spectacular was a lot of fun to watch.

Is it just me or is the audio dreadful on this vid. Drops in and out?
Is that Roy with the Ollie? :D
Amazing review Dice Tower. I love having multiple voices give their opinion.
Man! I'm gonna miss Zee's TARGET audience system
Big fan of the these multi reviewer videos!

I wish I’d been around in the 90’s, so my era.

Fantastic review! I’ll be looking out for this one.
Very good review and interesting to see what was great (and not so great) for each of you.
I wish the board was just one huge skate park. Or school grounds etc. not the entire city. It just makes it seem congested. Still cool though.
Excited to play Tony Hawk the game
For audio, once you've mixed everything roughly where you want it, throw a limiter on the master track. Will help everything be the same volume
Ooo some signs of the "paradigm" shift tom hinted at last week
Nice! Cant wait for it to come in!
I thought the board was busy too and great to see Camilla performing the rules run through!

Such a great idea on the soundtrack from THPS1 while playing this. Just got my tracking number from a retail pre order. Stoked!
Yeah the setup is Bad. And no special Powers or little bit asymetric? It would fit perfect
Wow, I'm surprised by these scores. I thought the second half of your turn was underwhelming. Gonna have to give this one another go.
@Roy Nice flex!
Cool game

I generally enjoy Pandasaurus games… I don’t think this will be any different.
Camilla should lean into a Foghorn Cleghorn review style. "I say. I say. I say.I say that's a great game, my boy."
Would this be considers a 3 squares review? 😂 Three triangles? 😂😂😂. Or maybe a 3 stooges review lol

There are chapters for the videos. I always skip ahead. :)
