Red Buttons (b. 1919 - 2006) was an American actor and comedian. He won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his supporting role in the 1957 film Sayonara. He was nominated for awards for his acting work in films such as They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Harlow, and Pete's Dragon. Buttons played a lead role, that of Private John Steele, in the 1962 international ensemble cast film, The Longest Day. Buttons became a nationally recognizable comedian, and his "Never Got A Dinner" routine was a standard of The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast for many years. He made numerous appearances at Friars Club roasts and Chabad telethons, where he was often brought on and off stage to the tune of "Hava Nagila". (He once told an interviewer, "I'm a Jew who is doing comedy, not a 'Jewish comic'"[5])
His best-known catchphrase, "Never got a dinner!" formed the basis for elaborately eccentric lists of famous people (and their mothers) who had not been honored with celebrity dinner roasts. Another of his catchphrases was "I did not come here to be made sport of," which was later taken up by the radio talk show host Howie Carr. Buttons received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for television, his star being located at 1651 Vine Street. He was number 71 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time.
Tom Snyder (Thomas James Snyder) (1936 -2007) was an American television personality, news anchor, and radio personality best known for his late night talk shows Tomorrow, on the NBC television network in the 1970s and 1980s, and The Late Late Show, on the CBS Television Network in the 1990s. Snyder was also the pioneer anchor of the primetime NBC News Update, in the 1970s and early 1980s, which was a one-minute capsule of news updates in primetime.

I remember me and my parents watching those Dean Martin
roasts and we'd all say Red's catchphrase with him,,,,, "never got a dinner" or "never had a dinner" !!! lol
Red buttons was a criminally underrated comedian rest his soul.
Red Buttons had an amazing facility. Tremendous delivery, impeccable timing and quite often brilliant material, much of which he wrote himself. He was beloved and admired by his fellow comics. Being a great comic does not guarantee superstardom. Lady Luck plays a role in that regard. Red found his niche on the Roast Circuit where his Never Got A Dinner shtick never got old. One of the few standup comics to win an Oscar. Hardly underrated by those who knew real talent.
Everyone who sees him will recognize him. His name just wasn't really popular. What awesome stories!
