Harlan Jay Ellison (1934 - 2018) was an American writer, known for his prolific and influential work in New Wave speculative fiction, and for his outspoken, combative personality. His published works include more than 1,700 short stories, novellas, screenplays, comic book scripts, teleplays, essays, and a wide range of criticism covering literature, film, television, and print media. Some of his best-known works include the Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" (he subsequently wrote a book about the experience that includes his original screenplay), his A Boy and His Dog cycle, and his short stories "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" and "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman". He was also editor and anthologist for Dangerous Visions (1967) and Again, Dangerous Visions (1972). Ellison won numerous awards, including multiple Hugos, Nebulas, and Edgars.
Tom Snyder (1936-2007) was an American television personality, news anchor, and radio personality best known for his late night talk shows Tomorrow, on the NBC television network in the 1970s and 1980s, and The Late Late Show, on the CBS Television Network in the 1990s. 'Tom Snyder was a pioneering figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. Loved by millions, respected by peers, and resisted by the executives for speaking his mind.'

Harlan Ellison’s I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream remains one of the greatest short stories ever. His contemporaries were giants, but not one of them could have written it.
I think this is one of the humble moments I've ever seen of Harlan when Tom says you smile every time you talk about beating the crap out of the world and Harlan has a short moment of reflection there about that isn't a good thing.
Jeez, I can actually hear Harlan laughing while Tom is reading some of the quiz answers -- it's not just Tom's staff. I know that laugh! I wish both of these guys were still with us.

Harlan's picture should be in the dictionary (for those who still collect books) or at least online next to the definition of "Pugnacious" 😏 He was larger than life and never boring or mundane. Here's hoping he retains his Icon status through future generations.
Love the bamboo bit. That is a thing that most writers for TV will not think of, but Harlan did. He imagined things, he didn't just write things.

Frank Sinatra has a Cold was one of my favorite stories of all time. I’m a huge fan of science fiction short stories and I enjoyed Harlan Ellison from a boy and his dog and etc, but remember his personality from not backing down to Frank Sinatra approaching him and passive aggressively insulting him for the way he was as dressed. If you do not know why this event is so amazing I highly recommend researching gay tese. Specifically harlan’s reputation for living and thriving on constant conflict, and Sinatra’s acquaintances and connections at that specific point in time. It’s akin to when Johnny Carson stuck his hand up the girl’s skirt at the club and only narrowly avoided having a hit on him after being immediately 100% used up

Harlan reminds me of the little scientist guy, in Dan Brown's novel, Deception Point.
I've heard Harlan say that before, "Who wants a lot of books you've already read?" and I live by it -- I have thousands of books I haven't read, and thousands that I have read. But books, for me (and for Harlan, I assume) are not just information and education and entertainment -- they are an essential furniture of life, and security. If you have a lot of books, you are a stable person, you are trustworthy. If you do not have at least one bookcase full of books (like my father), I will not trust you.

if you need that many books you're pretentious and trying to look intelligent when in reality you're just a basketcase without conviction.
you only need a few books: a bible, a dictionary, a thesaurus, and a journal.

Him talking about parents throwing away thier kids things is the first time Ive ever heard anyone else address that very serious issue.
One of the most disgusting to me a parent can do is to quite literally throw away your child's history.
The world needs Harlan Ellison more now than ever, but he and his kind have left us here, hopeless and deficient, to be devoured by pernicious mobs of social and identity cults and severely misguided and sanctimonious cretins. I hope that he at least understood how correct he was about most things before his passing.

I do have a couple of books by Kersh that I found in a used book store, on Harlan's recommendation. Great stuff, but I would be hesitant to call him, or anyone, my favorite. John Collier, Richard Matheson, Donald Westlake, Fredrick Brown, Charles Beaumont... They are all up in that neighborhood, with many others. This is just not the kind of question you want to ask in a short format interview. And this is just the fiction. In the non-fiction there is Colin Fletcher and Roger Shattuck, and many others. On food, there was MFK Fisher, but I doubt that Harlan ever thought much about food writing (I have one tall bookcase dedicated to that). Oh, and essays -- Orwell and EB White and Bertrand Russell. Really, the answers from Snyder and King are kind of... cringy? Oh well, never mind the book nerd in the room.

And Ellison got a pretty bad Alfred Hitchcock Hour out of Memos From Purgatory, with a horribly mis-cast Jimmy Caan as Ellison, and a likewise mis-cast Walter Koenig as one of the other gang guys (he should have been Ellison).
Haha I'm such a nerd was watching this on the toilet and when he was about to say his favourite author I shouted "Gerald Kersh!". Damm I miss this man he got me through alot and I'm not just a I.H.N.M.A.I.M.S. fan who jumped on board I just bought deathbed stories on a wim and I was hooked .His story's are amazing jeffty is 5,the whimper of whipped dogs,Basilisk,pain god...........I could go on. Also have 6 Gerald kersh books (new and 2nd hand) due to him also a brilliant writer!

And, finally, Harlan was absolutely right about religion. It is total bullshit. When it gets something right, it is talking about love and tolerance, but mostly, it is talking about clan hatred and murder. Own up. One of the few good things I can name about religion (superstition) is that it made Harlan comfortable with the use of Yiddish. I love it! First introduced to me by Lenny Bruce, Yiddish is a musical language. When I hear it, not so often, I smile. 😊 That's a kvell!

You might be shocked to learn that--even now in 2021--they still don't know. Why is that? The building blocks of life are literally all over the earth. Life should literally be "springing up" all over the place. Please enlighten us with your scientific brilliance. And thank you in advance.

@@CorvusCorvidae777 If you would like to read a recent article on the probability of life evolving, then google this: "We’re all alone: Oxford study says chance of intelligent life elsewhere very low". The statistical chances in favor of abiogenesis from a soup is very low.
