I was so mad when Santa turned out to be the villain, he gave a wonderful explanation as to why he didn't pick candy, the job is all about delivering presents to kids and someone who can't connect with kids is just wrong for the job. Why did they have to go for the cliche twist villain trope when he was doing so well?

Most likely because as an audience, we were expecting the series to be summed up with that speech and for Candy to learn a life lesson that would've progressed her as a character (as is expected in the Christmas specials this series was satirizing.)
But, no. They just went: "Screw it", and went with the cliche ending BECAUSE it was unexpected (and Somehow that is supposed to be funny.)

Damn. Santa explaining his successor decision to Candy was legit one of the most profound speeches I've ever heard. It's a real shame that it's not only attached to this tripe -- but it's treated as if Santa was just "mansplaining" to her and thrown away like it meant nothing. The writers truly are tone-deaf.

The worst part is, by their logic they had to get Santa to dislike her over a minor thing.
Problem is, liking children is an ESSENTIAL JOB OF SANTA
So they say they don't understand Christmas by making the BIGGEST PART into a "Oh no sorry you can't do it" for this egotistical brat.

That Santa scene is actually incredible. When Santa saw how she interacted with children, he realized that she didn't want the position to bring joy to the world, she wanted the position just so she could be the first female Santa. While Santa liked her and her ideas, he realized that she didn't have her heart in the right place and someone with that attitude towards the job and towards children could never be a worthy Santa that children around the globe would write to. Like how are you gonna be Santa if you don't even want to read the kid's letters? It's a shame that they missed this and made Santa out to be the villain. The show would've probably been much better if episode 6 was the last episode.

God, that comment on sexual harassment just reminded me of something. I once had a girl twerk right in my face at a party, and I tried to get away, but I was sitting on the couch and really couldn't get out of the way. I kept leaning back and tried to make it very clear that I didn't like it. The girl asked if it made me uncomfortable and I said yes, please stop. Later on, same girl did it again. It took a male coworker of mine to make a joke about me being gay to get her to stop. I'm straight, but I wasn't attracted to her and didn't like being put on the spot like that. It's crazy how normalized that kind of behavior is towards men. Everyone thinks we're horny all the time so we must always want sex all the time. Even other men take that stance. Hell, I have a hard time labelling that as sexual harrassment, but yeah, it is. In terms of relationships and sex, the woman is always right. Doesn't matter if the guy wants it or not, because it's not a question for them, of course they want it. I never talk about this because I don't want to admit that it happened to me, and I don't think others would take it seriously. Fuck this show making that a joke

I once heard the phrase “being a man in general society is like being the favorite child in an abusive household.” My household isn’t what I would call abusive, but I do have experience being the favorite child, watching my dad come down harder on my brothers than me, wishing to be held more accountable but also secretly relived he’s not like that with me, being resented by my brothers, knowing I’m favored because I’m AFAB and therefore dads “little girl” (which is meaningless), and then also being scared shitless of stepping out of line because I wouldn’t want dad to growl at me the same way he does my brothers. And that was literally the best metaphor I could’ve been given because I understood instantly how shitty male gender roles are in the only way I could ever come to understand

That was a really good explanation to why candy couldn't be the next Santa. It could have redeemed itself, the simplistic petty "go fuck yourself" could've been a cold closing to the scene used to communicate that candy is still not getting it or something and will learn the hard way, y'know to go with the 10 million other clearly intentionally communicated character flaws including the primary reason of the discussion of not being good with kids. Where the show really fucks up is when they wasted all of that by making Santa actually "bad" in the most forced way possible. "Because anytime someone you antagonize gives you an answer you don't want that countless people more driven than you have to make do with, it must be because they're lying snakes!!!" I think it could have been saved, but not by THOSE writers. The moment Candy said f off and walked away, it could have been the starting point where the show began showing the environment not from Candy's perspective, but from a third person, objectively this time. Progressively we learn how Santa has been right all along, while we gradually see Candy becoming the villain, going down a path of ignorance and hate against all those who denied her dominance over the company, revealing how she doesn't care about making kids happy, but more about her gaining full control over the place and establishing her rules. It could be easily achievable, considering how toxic her character was shown to be since the begining... But I guess the people who run it sympathise more with her than they do with anyone else.

I work with children and the most important part of the job is getting kids to feel comfortable around you. Of course, teaching them the material of the day is a must, but it’s all meaningless if they don’t want to be there. When you’re the only adult figure in the room, they want you to be approachable and kind because there’s no parents or siblings or other authority figure who can eject them out. Being someone kids can be themselves around, laugh around, work around, etc. is the real challenge.

She wouldn't have the excuse of it being based in sexism then, and would have to face the fact that her personality was why she didn't get the job she wanted, rather than her gender. It would have been an avenue to force character growth and have her partially "succeed" in her plan while still not being rewarded for her negative actions.
Then she has to make the choice to either support the female successor out of solidarity and help her move forward, or refuse out of pettiness and have to acknowledge that she wanted these things not out of a noble goal of equality, but out of her own jealousy and desire for more power and influence.

Santa’s reason on episode 6 moment really hit home with me.
My sister always talks about how she wants a baby one day, but from what I’ve seen she hates being around kids. I try to explain to her how that there’s a difference between wanting a baby and wanting to be a mother, she said that she’ll learn eventually but ik she doesn’t have maternal instincts.
Whenever we babysit our younger cousins she only wants to hold and play with the babies but when the actual responsibilities come to play (such as feeding, changing and bathing and helping them sleep and when they start crying) she leaves me to do the work. Once the babies turn to kids she starts to ignore them.
I don’t think that she’s intentionally bad with kids it’s just like what Santa says “you either have it or you don’t.”
She also is on the spectrum so I don’t blame her if it’s too overwhelming, it sometimes frustrates me when she says she wants a family but won’t work for it.

The scene with Santa on the bench reminds me of a plot thread in the Artemis Fowl books. One of the protagonists is basically what amounts to the first female police officer, and the commander relentlessly calls out every little mistake she makes, and way more harsh to her than any of the male officers. And when she finally confronts him about it, he basically says "Yes. I am absolutely being harder on you because you are a woman. But that's only because everyone else is going to be judging you unfairly. I need to push you to be more than average, you have to be exceptional, otherwise they will never give other women the chance to do what you are doing."
Except they didn't undercut it by having the female protagonist say "fuck you" and storm out anyway.

The problem is Seth Rogan tried way too hard to be progressive, and in doing so, he became offensive himself. He wasn’t telling a story, he was giving a political statement, and that’s the biggest problem here. There’s nothing wrong with having a message about racial diversity or inclusiveness, but you need to make it a good story with good characters first, and the message comes second. That way, the audience will be willing to follow the story, and thus would be more receptive to the message. If the message is all that your story has going for it, you risk alienating your audience, especially if not everyone wants a message shoved down their throat. Especially with Santa Inc. where they went really overboard with their message that they forgot to make the story compelling and their characters likeable. Everyone is either mean or abusive or both, and Candy, who we’re supposed to be rooting for, is an angry feminist who doesn’t care about making friends or who actually believes in her cause. She treats everyone like a means to an end at best or an enemy at worst, and that makes her unlikeable. That is exactly the wrong way to give the message, because if we can’t like anyone, we’ll have no desire to stick with them, and thus the message is lost. In order to give your message, you need to first give a good story with likeable characters.

    • @sygos
      @sygos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem is, racial diversity and inclusiveness isn't what they promote. Santa is a white male so he cannot be Santa anymore. Why exclude white men from the job?

You perfectly summed up the right way to handle representation. When writers don't actually care, or they focus more on being inclusive rather than the character themself, you often end up with a boring, rude, or sometimes offensive character as a result. The character still needs to be interesting. The audience should be able to sympathize with them. It doesn’t matter what race or gender the character is, if they're poorly written people aren't going to care about them.

    Here's a moral for everyone.
Just because someone is a Bad or even EVIL person, doesn't mean they still can't make a good point or have a logical thought.
Santa may have been corrupt the whole time in this show..........that summation of why Candy wouldn't make a good Santa (At least the more public aspect anyway.) was still on that mark.
The Show wants to pretend that that statement doesn't matter or isn't relevant because he's the twist villain.......but it doesn't, even if he was lying, the statement and analysis was accurate (Which I guess makes that an unintentional truth in that scenario.).
A fun example is a Lawful Evil Character you can recruit in Wrath of the Righteous, a Gnome Hell Knight who is always dedicated to closing the World Wound at any costs (Which include some genuinely awful thing, such as killing wounded troops so they can't be raised as undead troops for the demons, or something like that.), he however never does anything he thinks is detrimental to that cause, and will even respect a Chaotic Good character as long as they don't disrespect him in turn and at least listen to his advice, even if they don't act on it.

The reason why the modern Santa Claus is an elderly white man with a beard is because he's based off of many different European interpretations of the Spirit of Christmas. Father Christmas in the United Kingdom, Pere Noel in France, Sinter Klass in the Dutch Netherlands, the list goes on. And they all have their roots in the 3rd Century Christian Monk Saint Nicholas who was famous for giving gifts to children.
And yes I'm well aware that Saint Nicholas was a Turk but that's not how the European Legends evolved over time. It's not a racist conspiracy theory, it's just a tradition.
And more importantly it's a victimless tradition.
