This is one of the most distressing songs from Broadway. The fact that she's FANTASIZING about her parents telling her that they love her is very heartbreaking.
To hear this song and know that everything her mom and dad are singing to her are nothing but what she **wishes** they'd say to her, I'm not sure I can hear this song without crying. It's an utter gut-punch.
Amazing interpretation. I was a little choked up when she pulls her parent closer and her expression before saying "wildly fanciful". Also need to say the lighting and blocking are also great.
I came back to watch (again and again) because the lighting/staging were the most rememberable that I’ve seen. And the vocals are great too (obviously).
The tiny nuances in Olive's performance are absolutely divine. This is one of my all time favourite MT songs, and allthough heartbreaking i rarely cry when watching a performance of it. This one finally broke me however. She just seems so broken and in desperate need of being put back together, but the addition of her small inadequate smiles really brings home how very much she wishes she could be happy. Chefs kiss
my absolute favorite version of this song, the harmony in their voices is so heartbreaking. the mom and dad match perfectly, and don’t even get me started on olive. as someone who is playing olive now, i am constantly watching this video and it breaks my heart every time, the actress playing olive knows exactly how to capture this feeling of longing and sadness. the breaks in her smile, the audible crying, everything about her performance is beautiful
The first time I heard this, I was watching our high school perform it. It had me in tears, especially with how for most of my life, My Biological mom wasn't in the picture that much. I knew she loved me, and I knew that everyone who had a part in raising me had loved me, but it still hurt. I'm so happy I get to see her so much more. My wish wasn't as Chimerical as I thought it was. :')
My highschool performed this musical this year and performed this song perfectly. I actually cried during this song. You better trust I watched the musical 3 days in a row
Oh my word. That is literally the best performance ive seen of this song ever. Olive’s acting was absolutely outstanding!!! When she pulled them closer to her I could seriously feel those emotions slapping me in the face lol. Actually though, that was amazing. I do wish Olive and her parents got a little more light on their faces in a couple of parts but that may have been intentional. But that was hecking amazing!!! Well done!
I got cast to play Olive in my school’s musical for next year (my teacher does auditions in advance so we can memorize over the summer) and I can relate to this song in my own way. I have some pretty bad issues at home myself, and they’re not noticeable to anyone who doesn’t live there. Just like Olive. If I start crying during this song it definitely will be real. “I think he takes out on me what he wants to take out on you.”
Hey, how did the show go? I hope you had a great time with it. It can be very freeing to play a character you relate to, like, the catharsis that comes with expressing feelings you maybe aren't able to if you didn't have the mask of playing someone else. Hope you're having a good day today!
This is one of the best performances of a broadway musical song I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot of musicals! The emotion and hurt you feel during this song the actors truly bright it to life and made you feel the pain Olivia feels I’ve never seen anything like this before! Congrats!! I’d love to see the full performance!
this song hits very hard for me in a quite a few of different ways. i was sent to the psych ward a day before this show. i was a bee. i sang this song in the psych ward missing the musical and my parents. even though we have issues, i just wanted my troubles to go away and be home.
Beautiful interpretation. This song makes me cry every single time. Seriously, in theatres, I’ve had to plug my nose and twist my shirt to stop myself from sobbing loudly.
A couple of my friends are performing this song as part of a showcase we’re doing and I’ve never heard it until they performed what they had for us and it was amazing. They really did this song justice

When my school did two separate productions of this show, Olive’s Dad was played by the same actor who played Chip both times. In my opinion, it works better since Chip only appears in the very beginning and very end in Act 2.
This song would be like if you are watching Book of Mormon and the actors tell you, “Surprise! You are watching Les Mis!” I also feel like it is no different to the movie Click.

This made me weep like a child this afternoon. Is the girl playing Olive pursuing a career in musical theatre now? I hope so. She is amazing.
I’ve heard this song 3 times my whole life. Sobbed hysterically each time.
看了好几个版本,这个版本的最能让我感动。妈妈唱歌的时候就开始热泪盈眶了,直到三个声音重合,眼泪流了下来。非常棒的演绎!🎉
This song always gets me it's so raw and emotional
Their voices are PHENOMENAL !! ❤️❤️
I fell in love with this song and just got casted as a Rona and I will get to sing this song as olive’s mom, and I am so so excited!
god the vibrato control is AMAZING
i watched this musical 6 times because i loved it so much and cried each time to this song
This just made a grown man cry
