One of my all time favorite musical theatre songs! Basically Olives mom left her and her dad and told olive she was going on vacation. It's also implied that Olives dad is abusive and emotionally absent. Also you were right, all of this is in Olives head imagining what it would be like if her parents really loved her. The idea that her parents love her is "highly unrealistic and wildly fanciful" to her. I'm auditioning for this show soon and I'm so excited. I'm hoping for Olive or her mom/the teacher just so I can be in this song. Great reaction, everytime I watch/listen to it it breaks my heart. Also you should check out The Chappell Players version of this (2018). There's a full recording and the cast is SO talented!
its also heavily implied that the reason (or one of them) that olive's mom left in the first place is that she's pregnant since she's on a "9 month spiritual journey"
@@ruffboimags exactly. all of these messages are great i just wanted to add for context for the youtuber since he hadn't seen it. This show is mainly a comedy. Almost all the songs are played for laughs. and one of the mysterys in the first act is this girl who has managed to get all the way to the spelling bee and sign up etc but has no parents there. They play it for a few jokes in the first act as the mystery lingers why she is alone and then her word is called in the second act and we get a devastating, complete tonal shift into this heartbreaking song. I think even structuring the mystery of that reveal speaks to how humans deal with trauma. Any adult should immediately be suspicious a kid is alone at a spelling bee but all of us, the characters and audience alike are more comfortable looking for the laughs than the truth so when the truth eventually comes, its as jarring as ever and probably why we needed to laugh to begin with. its really great writing capturing a really complex issue that too many relate to.
Oh wow, I just stumbled onto this. This clip is from a production I directed 6 years ago. It was in a little 100 seat theatre in our town which is about an hour north of Sydney, Australia. This clip of the I Love You Song has since gotten quite a few views on TH-cam. Thank you so much for reacting to it!
"chimerical" might have had a double meaning here because a "chimera" is that strange ancient mythical beast with three animals in one body: a lion, goat, and snake. These three people are a family but each is discordant with the other two. And Ostrofsky means one who lives on an island. Also interesting!
Yes, 25th Annual is one of my favorites!! It's definitely a very character-driven show like Cyclone, but it's got some real fun group numbers too. Would love to see more songs from this show! :)
"That was it." 😂 It was enjoyable watching someone else's first reaction to this song that hits so deeply. The first time I heard it, I was moved but did not know why and I would not have remembered that first word! But now every word is so so so familiar that it cracked me up when he said "That was it".😊
Not sure if you knew this, but the music and lyrics in this show were written by William Finn, who wrote falsettos!! His unique writing style definitely shines through in some of these songs
I love this musical with all my heart. thank you so much for reacting to this song. I would love to see what you think of more of this show, especially dan fogler's performance
Man the like “ Dear if you should feel my gloom Blame it on me Blame it on your dadilly and ma’m illy Cause depression runs in our family” hits like a Mac truck for me. My mom suffered so having from depression and attempted suicide twice in my senior year of HS.
@comet, you've probably found it by now but I happened to see this one th-cam.com/play/RDdbF1PBEQvn0.html&playnext=1&si=moS0YC0b0RH71Vc2 as I was watching lots of versions. What a great song.

Really well said. What a song.

Love how intentional every detail that William Finn writes is!

i would love to see your reaction to Chip's Lament, it's very different tonally lol

This was absolutely my favorite song to perform in high school (i got to play the 'mom' here). The show was so fun with all the improv sections
Would love to see you do more from this musical if not the whole show. All the songs are bangers

@hex that is really interesting about the songwriter. One of the most powerful harmonies I've heard.

I bawl every time I hear that song.
My college put this musical on last fall. It was so good!

You need to react to the opening number of this show
i desperately need to know which performance this was because i need to watch the video itself

Thank you so much! I have Pandemonium up on my channel but none of the others.
The kids in this show are played by adults. 😉
