For anyone watching this, and I can't afford this kit nor do I have the room for it, but to solve the problem of the turret falling forward or to the rear stick some weight inside and glue it down. Problem solved. Looks great Ben.

Ive been building models since I was 8. Now pushing 48. There is no way I would have the patience for all the photo etch parts. I built a 1/700 scale Titanic and put tiny photo etched passengers on the deck . I dont know how many of them went flying off the sprue never to be found again as I cut them off! Hats off to you! Sweet, very intricate but very realistic. Photo etch adds a lot of fine detail and the more you work with photo etch the easier it is to apply. Very nice. I have several models going and the all have some photo etching, it takes a lot of skill to make what your building in 1/200 scale......thanks
My first time building a Tamiya Kit was a panther ausf b, I ended finishing it nicely, but as I was doing the tracks I elbowed the gun barrel... ended up breaking lol.
North Carolina-class and South Dakota-class both had the 16"/45 cal. and the Iowa's had the 16"/50 cal. Cool footage of the Naval Gun Factory at the Washington Navy Yard. You are correct about the turret rangefinder, so that it can be fired in local control. Otherwise, fire was primarily directed remotely from the director atop the control tower with information being fed into the fire control computers in the plotting room below decks in the citadel.
Hello Ben. I just finished watching the 21st episode of the 1/200 USS Missouri. Excellent job!!!! I’ve learned a lot fro you videos. I’m from Missouri and several years ago, I visited our State Capital Building in Jefferson City, Mo. If you haven’t been there, you need to go.(Whenever this Pandemic is over with). The have an all brass mock-up of the Mighty Mo. If I remember correctly, it’s about 20ft long or better. It has it on room! The literature states that it was used to train new sailors that were assigned to her. The detail is unbelievable! I’m sure the building is off limits now but when we get “back to normal” it might be worth a visit if you haven’t yet. Normally the capital in open to the public and free of charge. The first floor is a museum all about the history of Missouri. The upper floors are accessible and it of interest also. Thanks you for the videos. I watch the all the time and will continue to do so.Tom.

Those things on the sides of the turrets are high precision range finders. There is a fire control computer in each turret that looks like a large block of brass with large wash valves on it.
What's amazing is there's enough people in the world with the patience to attempt building one of these things to justify making not just one kit, but kits to add to your kit. I wonder how many actually finish one of these monsters? Amazing detail.

The last time I did a plastic model I was a kid I didn't even have my driver's license but I find myself wanting to get back into it. I've recently been doing diecast construction models most of them my own custom just taking them apart and then repainting them. The way you did your model is absolutely beautiful and it makes me even more determined to get back into it the first ship that I saw that I wanted to do was the Bismarck. I hope you don't mind if I take some pointers from your videos. That is an absolutely beautiful build and I can't wait to see the finished product.
Wayne, i am sixty three now and began modeling after a fifty year hiatus. As a pilot my interest is in planes however, my current project is a 70s muscle car. I have built ships and tanks and trucks. Each with continued enjoyment. So I encourage you to build whatever you fancy. I wonder why i ever stopped!

As a father and grandparent dont always have the time to work on it so yeah it needs lots of time till itl be done and completed. I believe this will be the third year working on it and still will need another year to the finish. Helas no video's of it and wouldnt know how to edit hem anyways lol. Love watching your work. Extreme patience and intricate detail. Others have already mentioned the optical rangefinders. Those boxes house the ends of the huge split/double image rangefinder that extends in a big tube from side to side across the inside rear of the turret officer booth.
I was thinking, perhaps you could use those lines on your green pad that everything is resting on....I find them to be a great help when lining things up parallel....otherwise, awesome job and a great build to follow...as are all of yours!
Nah his scale seems off. I have been on USS Iowa (parked at Long Beach) which is basically the same ship, the main turret itself is about twice an adult's height, less than two stories tall. Those ladder can only be used by midgets or smurfs based on his scale. Also the interior of the ship is super cramped compared to say, modern destroyers.
Your use of photo etch is incredible the model looks incredible. I'm building the 1200 HMS nelson with the photo etch in the kit and that's a handful!!
Ben, The part that you called a wave-guide on the side of the gun house at the rear is actually the manual main range-finder for the gun house. The ones forward are individual range finders for the individual guns.
without googling it, i would guess the smaller two on each side are transmitters and the larger one at the rear is the receiver for the range and direction finders for the local turret. i believe these are for emergency local turret control if the main finders are knocked out.
The 16" guns were not built by Bethlehem Steel, but rather by the Washington Navy Yard/Naval Gun Factory. Some raw barrels were produced at Bethlehem during WWII and shipped to the Navy Yard for finishing, but the Navy Yard had the complete facilities necessary to produce these guns and was responsible for completion of all large naval guns. When completed, they were barged to Dahlgren Virginia for "proofing" (test firing) and then barged back to DC, where they were placed on Pennsylvania Railroad F22 class flat cars and taken by rail to the Brooklyn and Philadelphia Navy Yards for installation into the Iowas. The WNY supplied main guns for all US battleships. For west coast refits, the guns were again shipped by rail, typically to a depot in Pocatello, Idaho. From there, they were distributed to the Navy yards doing the refits.
It would be so interesting if you could add servos under the turrets and make them move left or right. Perhaps that would be an upgrade down the line. Keep up the great work tho!
You may have already got your answer about the "wave guide" Its one end of the optical range finder. They use it if they are firing from local control. The range finder runs all the way across the back of the gun house and sticks out either side of turret (gun house)
I love the Iowa's. I'm going to see about getting one of these kits, but I think I want to do the modernized version. I'll be taking vacation later this year, and one of my stops will be the U.S.S. Wisconsin. I plan on taking lots of reference pictures.
The Iowa Class was never schedule to have the Mark 6 guns of the preceding South Dakota Class and North Carolina classes. When she was ordered, the design only ever included the 16"/50 Mark 7. Early design studies included 9 of the 16"/50 Mark 2 from the defunct Lexington class battlecruisers (turned into the two Lexington class aircraft carriers) and the 1920's design South Dakota Class (not to be confused with the class that preceded the Iowas), nine of the 18"/48 caliber guns, or 9 or 12!!! of the 16"/45 Mark 6's from the North Carolina's or South Dakota's, but when the ship was ordered, the 16"/50 Mark 7 was chosen for the added velocity. The Iowa's were also designed around the Mark 8 Super Heavy 16" Armor Piercing shell whereas the South Dakota class and North Carolina Class had to be minorly modified to utilize them. They fired the same "high capacity" (high explosive) shell though. The Mark 8 gave Iowa about 95% of the penetrating capability of the Yamato Class without the added problems of the heavier shell. The "wave guides" are actually the optical range finders for manual turret control. The Iowa class' fire control radars are actually mounted on top of the main optical range finders on the main and secondary mast. All of the optical range finders were back up systems because the fire control radar was plenty accurate for fire control solutions. Combined with the Ford Mark 1A fire control computer. So the "ears" on the turret are range finders, the ones further forward are for individual gun training sights to tweak fall of shot in turret local control. Each turret, as well as the main battery plot room all had their own Ford Mark 1A fire control computers. The Mark 1A was a marvel of electro-mechanical computing. REALLY important piece of kit on USN Battleships in WWII as it provided accurate, real time gun plots no matter the orientation of the ship. The Direction Finder (roughly 27:00), is actually the Mark 51 Director with Mark 14 40mm Gunsight. The rod between them is a prop shaft that controls a hydraulic valve on the base for the 40mm gun mount. When the director rotates, so does the 40mm mount. When the Mark 14 gunsight elevates, so does the quad mount! :) Model is looking good! I'm glad I can "build" this model vicariously through watching you do it... because I have neither the patience, nor attention to detail to deal with all that Photo etch.

It's a small point, but the two battlecruisers that were later turned into aircraft carriers were of the Saratoga class. They were named Lexington and Saratoga, and were converted in 1927 following the Washington Naval Treaty.
Hi couple of questions. What color are you using for the superstructure and what type of paint are using to prime the hull and everything? Would it look good to marble the paint? Regarding the stripe on the hull, is it more historically accurate for it to be darker like your model or to be lighter like the one on the box. Any help would be appreciated since I bought the same exact model and am planning to start it within the next month. I am planning on using your videos as a guide while building it.
Dang. That's amazing. Beautiful job. Have you considered dry brushing the blast bags with your alternate light color? That would bring out the highlights as well. Just a thought.

Glue some weight in the center of the bottom plate of the turret before gluing the whole turret together, that will counterbalance the cannon barrels.

The Wisconsin is a lot of fun to visit. They don't let you go inside very much. But the museum is really nice.

Hi couple of questions. What color are you using for the superstructure and what type of paint are using to prime the hull and everything? Would it look good to marble the paint? Regarding the stripe on the hull, is it more historically accurate for it to be darker like your model or to be lighter like the one on the box. Any help would be appreciated since I bought the same exact model and am planning to start it within the next month. I am planning on using your videos as a guide while building it.

Dang. That's amazing. Beautiful job. Have you considered dry brushing the blast bags with your alternate light color? That would bring out the highlights as well. Just a thought.
Yes, and I do a lot of dry brushing. But I wanted something even more subtle than that.
