    I Remember Times When Patrick Ewing Schooled Shaq!!!

  • @UnvisibleINK
    @UnvisibleINK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    My earliest basketball memories are from the mid 90s onward and the way I remember that era, Ewing was definitely not underappreciated in his time. I feel like the dialogue around him was that he was basically an automatic hall of famer. Clashes with the Bulls were legendary, just ask Spike Lee. However, the winds of time have definitely been less favorable to Ewing than they have to other players you mentioned like Barkley and Malone but it depends where your knowledge of Ewing is coming from. He seems to appeal less and less to younger fans and players, but anyone who watched the game actively while he was playing for the Knicks has applied the eye test and would probably argue that he's a top ten center of all time.
    Basically if you remember that John Starks could spontaneously take over a quarter despite not being a consistent All-Star caliber player then you probably also remember how consistently excellent Ewing was.

  • @Irfanhill
    @Irfanhill 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't really think he was underappreciated, maybe he became so by some younger fans but to me he even felt kind of overappreciated, because he played in one of the biggest markets in their last great NBA era and he was a truly positive figure for all we know.
    Everybody ranks Pat in the top 50 and often top 30 players of all-time, in the top 10 centers, as one of the greatest Knicks ever, and so on. Everybody who knows a little about basketball knows him as a great college player, the face of the New York Knicks, and a defensive presence to be reckon with.
    Then, there is the fact that he didn't win a ring (tough when you have to play Jordan's Bulls and Hakeem's Rockets) and played in a decade where other great centers were around the place, so maybe that's why you could say he is "underappreciated". I think most people value him correctly, he's not in the same discussion as the top 5 centers but comes right after alongside David Robinson, Alonzo Mourning, Dwight Howard (who's arguably more underappreciated)
    There is also the "Ewing theory" of 1999 when his team played better as he got hurt, which may be a reason for some people to underrate him.

    The NY Knicks royally screwed up the opportunity to have Bernard King and Ewing play together. The intensity of those two would have even stiffled Michael Jordan. Especially in Jordan's first 6 years. After that I don't know how they could be so inept at getting Ewing another dominant player. The Knicks ownership and management is still inept! I always said when he was playing that NY did not fully appreciate Patrick Ewing and that they'd regret that - well when Ewing retired they were never able to get another player or have another run like when Ewing was leading in a talent packed era. Ewing played in the time of the bigs - dominant centers and with Jordan! He still excelled!

    5th-8th all time at center

    Not underrated by me. When we got the NBA here in Australia in the 90's there were 2 player's I loved watching. Hakeem and Ewing. I just liked Hakeem more which is why I chose to follow the Rockets.

    Hes definitely one of the best defenders also a player who should have won DPOY even during his career he did kind of develop a 3pt shot but he gets ranked lower because of that bad series in 94 finals where hakeem destroyed him in that series also missed a open wide game winner aganist the pacers

    This notion that David Robinson was better than Patrick, didn’t take hold until AFTER they both retired.
    And if the Knicks had drafted Duncan instead of the Spurs, and Patrick had won two rings right before he retired, nobody would say that Robinson was better.

    Peak Ewing, 10 seasons (ish) was 22.5 PER, 2.0 OBPM, 2.0 DBPM with a 0.172 ws/48
    With peak ORTG not even being top 250 all time and peak DRTG being top 20 (18th)
    A comparable player to Patrick Ewing is peak Dwight Howard.

      But the reason why the Pippen dunk was so "WOOAAAAH!" was because Ewing was so great.
      Remember Deandre Jordan's lob dunk where the defender gets obliterated?
      Well imagined the Defender is the one dunking, and obliterating DJ instead.
      That's why the Pippen dunk means something :)
