    Have you ever thought about doing a “behind the scenes” on what goes into a review ? I’m not sure people realize that you spend weeks doing one (from what I hear). 😊 Everything from lining up the gear from manufacturers, to testing/listening, to topic notes/script, to filming, to editing, to posting, replying to comments, and final tracking. BTW, someone turned me on to Anyma. I’m digging it.

    I’m def a 2 channel hifi purist but would never besmirch a product for having hdmi. I’m far more interested in I2S connection and onboard dac performance of the integrated. Also I think ARC can be highly useful for 2 channel music especially if you have room modes and integration of subs. This seems like a fantastic option for the $.

    • @kadajawi6567
      @kadajawi6567 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ARC won't help you with room modes and a sub. It's just about getting digital audio to the amp. Manufacturers can do room correction without ARC, and they can not do room correction with ARC. Same with a dedicated sub output. However, manufacturers who offer ARC / eARC are probably more likely to offer room correction and a sub output, as they are less purist focused (or bone headed).

    I am a happy owner of the 6000A, thanks for your review on it!!! that caused to pull the trigger, I'm glad I could purchase it from Amazon UK (yes that is right) because in Mexico it is toooooo expensive and very hard to find. I'm using it with Triangles Comete 40th Anniversary and Topping E70 Velvet DAC, it is incredible even using optical from TV I feel the concerts ambiance, like in front of the artist and people behind whispering, very sublime type of sound that I enjoy too much. I think Triangles can offer more so when I saw the 7000A it became the first choice to "upgrade" but, not a secret, all the similarity it has with the 6000A and because there are just a few reviews of it has prevented me to take the decision. I just wish the 6000A has a little more sparkle on the top end (you car hear the drum plates but somewhat shy) and a little more depth, do you think the 7000A can give me that? Really appreciate any comment. Best regards.

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The 7000A is an upgrade over the 6000A, but it's more incremental rather than dramatic. Everything is going to be a little more refined but not outright different or wholly new. Will this result in brighter highs? Not likely, though detail, instrument separation and low level listening as well as bass control will marginally improve with the 7000A compared to the 6000A. Hope this helps. Thanks for your support!

    I gotta say: your commentary on 2 channel listening with a receiver was ALTOGETHER SPOT ON!!! I couldn't have said it any better! I have been enjoying 2 channel and multichannel music listening with my Yamaha receiver for almost 2 years, and the sound quality is very good, easily rivaling separate 2 channel setups. So I was pleasantly surprised to hear you guys telling the absolute TRUTH about this! Thank you so much!

      Comparing with what though? Can an AVR compete with a Technics R1000? A Pass Labs? Is it even as good as the Audiolab 9000A? Good enough? Perhaps. but some chase every last bit of quality, and if an AVR is THAT good, what excuse does any stereo amp have to not be as good? Would you be driving Focal Diablo Utopias with a Denon AVC-X4700h? Heck, with the Anthem recently tested? Or would you pair it with something better?
      (Granted, room EQ is useful and might make more of a difference than a marginally better amp.)

    • @Larwiz
      @Larwiz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kadajawi6567 I can only speak from experience. When I first heard my benchmark speakers (B&W 702 S2), they were paired with a Pioneer VSX LX504 AVR that sounded wonderful! It was $999. When I heard that pairing, I was convinced that I didn't need to get a separates system. A good AVR was all I needed. Especially since I love home theater just about as much as music, it works for me. I would be willing to bet you couldn't distinguish an AVR from a 2 channel system in a thorough blind test.

    • @Larwiz
      @Larwiz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kadajawi6567 Also, I've been to the shows. I've listened to pricey separate setups. And then I come home and listen to my rig, and so far, I don't feel like I've missed a beat. People get so caught up in the components, and believe that you have to spend crazy amounts of money to get good sound, when that really isn't the case. My entire system costs under $2500, and everyone that has heard it has said only good things. So I can only speak from my personal experience.

    • @kadajawi6567
      @kadajawi6567 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Larwiz Depends on the amps, but I've heard the difference between say the Powernode and 6000A or between an Icepower and a Purifi based amp. In either case I thought the first option was wonderful, until I heard what the speakers were actually capable of.

    • @Larwiz
      @Larwiz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kadajawi6567 Right. See in this field, there's always good, better, and best. And many of us are chasing the best, while we're already at good or better. My argument is that an AVR is fully capable of producing very good sound. Sound that could seriously contend with some Integrated or even separate systems. When I play cds through my Blu-ray player and receiver, you can't tell me that it isn't detailed and beautiful. I think it would challenge many CD transport/dac/separate systems. At the very least, it wouldn't be embarrassed by any of them.

    Great review! On the question of 7000A vs POWERNODE, I would say it comes down to use-case. I have an A14MKII that on paper is quite similar to the 7000A (minus the wonderful, wonderful inclusion of HDMI on the Audiolab) and I use it for a dedicated 2-channel listening zone. I have two POWERNODEs, one in a bedroom and the other driving my Patio setup. For a Zone 2-3 type of setup, the POWERNODE cannot be beat in terms of performance/value, especially with BluOS. For home theatre, get an AVR. However, for a dedicated 2-channel listening space, a dedicated integrated like the Audiolab 7000A (or separates) will always reign supreme.

    • @25aceface
      @25aceface ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely. Especially for dedicated 2-channel listening. I have a large room, and the Powernode often needed to be near max volume to drive a pair of LS50 Metas sufficiently for my listening position. I moved the Powernode to the patio where I can't listen too loudly without disrupting the neighbors anyway. :)

    It is the lack of tone controls that have made me continue to buy Rotel gear over the Audiolab. I would love to set-up the 7000 with some Q Acoustics, but my range of music is very eclectic, including a lot of older music. Without tone controls, you sometimes find yourself stopping a track as you cannot compensate for an older recording...even with remasters considered.
    The Rotel and Audiolab both give excellent sound for the money. I recently replaced my old Rotel 10 series amp with the Tribute A11, it is for our smallish living room, and is excellent; even without the DAC, the Tidal stream is awesome as the Bluetooth is great. The Audiolab would have been great for the man-cave, but without the tone controls, I think I will stay with Rotel.

    Serious question here for Andrew, as someone who hasn't "ARC"ed his setup yet: You mention controlling volume through Apple TV's remote, but what does that connection look like? Is the Audiolab connected to the Apple TV via HDMI, or is it both AudioLab and AppleTV connected to TV via two separate HDMI cables? I've watched your channel for years now, and you always talk about the convenience of ARC and eARC. I'd love to know more about the setup with these technologies, and how components are "networked", as that can really drive some buying decisions. Thanks for the great content as always.

    Also, the pre/pwr mode may work with the MiniDSP 2x4 but I'm concerned about the sequential ADC+DAC conversions.
    Wouldn't this affect the sound quality? The 2x4 is known to have a mediocre DAC...
    I have a feeling it would be better to use the MiniDSP only to low pass and EQ the subwoofers using the Audiolab's preout (the main speakers playing the untouched full range signal).
    Better yet, pretty sure you would get a better sound with a MiniDSP Flex running has the preamp into the Audiolab has a power amplifier + subwoofers. 😋

The Rose is certainly ten times the amp that I need for my small area, but respective to its visual appeal and the very tactile nature of its controls, I’m simply smitten. Out of all the gear I've bought over the years, the move from an integrated amp to a more powerful separate pre and power amps was the most notable in sound quality. Turn up the volume and the weight behind the sound of the NAD 214 power amp really kicks you in the chest! I was shocked at the change, and no other "upgrade" has ever made as much of a difference. I don't think I'd bother with NAD now, since their move to class D amps.

      @@AT-wl9yq I've noticed the strawman you're asserting here. You said "don't share your opinion" when I said those who said an AVR "couldn't excel" are delusional.
      I never said you and I have to agree it sounds great. My point was there is no evidence an AVR can't do the job just as well. It's the same tech - there's nothing magically different between a 2 channel amp and a 5 channel amp.
      You're free to FEEL however you want however any assertion that this is some fundamental flaw with AVRs in 2 channel playback isn't supported by any evidence.
      It's a religion and I wouldn't dream of dispossessing you of it . . .

      @@pcfreakx I was just going by what you said. Lets have another look at it.
      "and anyone saying a high end AVR can't excel at 2 channel is delusional."
      That's your opinion, but you state it as fact. I really don't care about all your BS with a strawman argument. People like you always find ways to justify your opinions as fact.
      As good as my HT gear is, it pales in comparison to well designed, purpose built 2 channel gear that costs much less. So, if you want to talk yourself into how good your HT sounds on 2 channel material, fine. You have every right to do so. But don't call me delusional because I don't see things your way.

    At that budget price, I agree that would make it my first choice but I still can't find it in Canada I believe so the Anthem currently on sale could be very interesting but I wish the 7000a was like the NAD 3050 with the meters, tone controls AND 2 pairs of speaker terminals, that would have made it the best of all time...

    But I'm still dreaming about the Yamaha rn2000a but would probably be happy with the 7000a for a few years but I would always be thinking about upgrading again, that's the big difference...

    I know youve probably not heard yet, but really curious to know how this amp sounds compared to the new Leak Stereo 230. Both the new Leak and Audiolab amps seem to be the beefed up versions of their respectful predecessors. Higher wattage and better input options (both have HDMI!).
    Style preferences aside, the one additional thing the Leak offers is tone control. That might win it out for me if its anywhere near as good as the audiolab. Have to think they are at least similar quality coming from the same parent company and being almost identical in price.
    I have not seen many reviews of the Leak yet though, so holding off on my decision for now!

    I know it isn't true, but I feel like questions I've been asking you via several platforms regarding receivers/integrated with HDMI has been answered - many thanks!
    One question though - from a practical perspective, do I need to interact with the 7000a directly when I've hooked up a streaming device? For example, I feel like listening to some Miles Davis or Taylor Swift via Tidal/Apple Music, do I need to interact with both the streamer and the Audiolab to get my music going - or would this, much as with TV playback with ARC, go automatically? Does the Audiolab 'sense' input, and change channels accordingly?
    Will audition (if possible) regardless for sound, but for day-to-day usage within a family setting, this could be a make-or-break it situation (in favor of an AVR or Powernode).

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Ovidiu N. Your remarks are only partially accurate. If you have the 7000A connected to your TV using an HDMI cable, then you need to make sure that CEC is turned on inside your TV's menu as well inside the amp's menu in order for the Audiolab to turn on and off automatically with your TV. This also enables your TV remote to control the volume on the Audiolab. In our case, we used the Apple TV remote to control the TV and the Audiolab (power and volume/mute - in integrated mode). If you are listening to an analog source and you were to hit volume or a button on your TV's remote, the Audiolab should switch to its HDMI input automatically. That said you are correct, the 7000A does not automatically switch between its analog or digital inputs. Doing this requires you to use the 7000A's included remote. This is not uncommon. There are very few products that have auto sensing on all inputs. Now you may find a product that will turn "on" when it senses a signal for the first time but that is not the same as what you are expecting or faulting the Audiolab for.

    Hey, thank your for your work. Well , I had Audiolab 6000a. One day, I found an old test about Onkyo a9150 and Onkyo A9150. The tester was impressed by the sound compared to amplifiers between 1000-1500€ taking into account the price of Onkyo A9130 ( 280€) and 9150 500€. He was surprised when the 9130 sounded better and better than amplifiers costing four five more. I bought an zonkyo a9130. I could not believe what I listened. I sold the audiolab 6000a. Another friend buy one to test and to compare it and he did not believe it. As to me, I believe that Japanese sound is the best as remasterind cd by Japanese, as to me, they are the best. A lot of European and American brands amplifiers but most of the components are Japanese and when it is a matter of making an home cinema amplifier (much more complicaties to alle than An hifi amplifier), Japanese are thé only one. Great review (and spirited back-and-forth) here. Were I in the market to tear out the middle of my 'fi (I'm not, since everything works nicely together, and via one remote at that), I'd jump for the 7000A in a heartbeat. I'm strictly a 2.0 listener, and while HDMI doesn't move my meter one iota, the fact that my beloved has hung a 52" screen above this system of mine means it would actually play a bit nicer with the Audiolab than my somewhat-aging NAD-based system does.

    I *always* wanted HDMI. Like forever! Not only do I want HDMI, I’ve been hunting for a headphone amp that will peel off the audio, give me the full surround sound codec simulated in two channel headphones, and pass the full 4K 120hz Dolby Vision/HDR/++ video to my TV. If anyone doubts that this is possible, my old Denon AVR which was from the 2K generation would give me the lossless audio codecs through the headphone jack. Don’t know which DAC chip they were using but it was awesome. My current generation Marantz SR8015 doesn’t do what its older cousin the Denon did. Rookie mistake on my part for not demoing the AVR before purchasing. Just this week I took my Sennheiser HD800S and demoed one of Yamaha’s top shelf Aventage AVRs. Yamaha was my second choice when I purchased my old Denon. I can tell you that Yamaha does not overlook the headphone output. The “enhanced” and the “AI” functions work through headphones and is bangin! I might have to sell my Marantz and get the Yamaha…. But that’s not financially realistic so I’m still on the hunt for a middleware solution.

    Hi Andrew and Kristi, from Portugal.
    I really enjoyed your review of the Audiolab 7000A. I especially agree with you, on Audiolab's failure to include tone control, after all, technically, there's nothing special about being included in the amp, in my opinion. On the issue of just using two channels having an AV amplifier, I've always done that with my old Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 HT receiver and I've always liked the sound quality, despite being outdated. Also, I've always used Onkyo's bi-amping capability with the bi-wiring of the Acoustic Energy Aegys Evo 3.
    By the way, what is your opinion about the compatibility of the 7000A with the AE Aegys? Thank you very much and congratulations for your excellent work.

I noticed the 7000a had a pre out and was going to run from the 7000a out and into the Lokius then back into an analog RCA port on the amp. You referred to 3 modes the amp could do. Other than run coax out the pre and back in is there anything else I need to do? I have found the Schiit Lokius to be a life saver and should receive it this week. I am also using Dacmagic 200, a Mac Mini and Sonus Faber speakers.I see you're recording today so I joined the fandom. If you can please give me a thumbs up or down, I think it will be up. To add to my other comment in reply on a separate thread, it is possible you have a faulty unit (#1). #2 Audio dropouts could be the fault of your audio output settings from your TV. You should set the TV. to output PCM. Another explanation for the dropouts could be a faulty HDMI cable. #3 With respect to streaming that functionality is not available nor promised from the Audiolab with the 7000A. To add streaming you need to buy either the 7000N Play or the Cambridge we mentioned in this review. Those products will give you app support. #4 As far as needing your phone and a remote, that is only if you are using Bluetooth. You can affect volume on your phone when using Bluetooth but you are affecting the signal's volume not the volume on the 7000A itself. #5 You need to place the 7000A in its "integrated" mode for the TV mute function to work.
      If you want a single remote solution with the 7000A, you need to invest in Audiolab's CD player and/or streamer here bit.ly/3lDwFQ0.

For stereo, it can be ok, but you do become aware that complex music played from a Rega Planet CD player just doesn’t resolve properly on the NAD. Bear in mind I am intimately aware of what the Genelecs can do in stereo going straight from a computer and DAC - they can be divine. And the NAD is better than most AVRs for stereo. So no, I don’t think AVRs can do that well with music, but I’d be delighted to be proven wrong. Currently looking at preamps with HT bypass… which are expensive….

If it’s your second system and you got a little bored with “agreeable creamy sound”, get the 7000. Audiolab is more dry and analytical, but at the same time is more rhythmic and engaging in my opinion. I also have an arcam sa30, which is similar to cxa81 but has 130W hdmi and Dirac. That’s another reason I felt comfortable taking a risk with the Audiolab… So I’m saying it depends on if you’re at the start of your journey or not

    Thanks for the review, Andrew, Kristi! I want to try this amplifier with a WiiM Pro streamer (with 10-band software EQ) and various speakers. Andrew: also thanks for the testing the out and in for an EQ ---that addition would preclude a subwoofer however.
    Comments:
    1. I have no idea who goes for the NAD product right now because what I've heard from their hybrid digital amps was the WORST experience with any amplifier I've tested --including compared to their own Blusound Powernode. Who likes sloppy bass? Who does the NAD work for? Very weird.
    2. Marantz is too dark/soft and lacks the punch of the AXR100. I am sure the Audiolab has a good chance at sounding better for my use than both of these, one for tone/EQ and less distortion than the Cambridge.
    3. I currently use the Blusound Powernode 80-watt unit and it's still too dark/soft and lame/characterless. You will find it lacking if you listen to rock ensembles or metal music.
    4. I don't have the budget to step up to $3000+ amps like Exposure, Hegel and top tier/Flagship units from any brand; the 7000A seems like a happy compromise.

    About the lack of hdmi. I get what you're saying and I'm not disagreeing with you, but I bet the vast majority of intergrated amp owners are using them 2 channel music only systems.
    For me a bigger concern is that they have a ht bypass. I use an avr and integrated together in a mixed use setup. I've yet to find an avr that really impressed me for music or can hang with a dedicated 2 channel setup.

      The possibility to add an EQ or DSP is not a unique feature of the Audiolab, there are even pretty old amps that offer this. So, it is as simple as it gets, you can just add it as mentioned in the vid (Pre out - EQ - Power In).
      The Dirac part is of course a bit more complex, but there are many guides available online. Just search for Dirac + hifi. If you add a miniDSP 2x4 you can even add a Sub, adjust the crossover, and use room correction. Pretty cool.

    People might be surprised if they gave 2 channel movie audio a try. I love my surround sound, but 2.0 is no slouch. In a smaller room, im for stereo all the way.

    What is the benefit of HDMI ARC over just using an optical cable from the tv to the amp or streamer? I like technology so not against it just don’t understand what it brings over existing technology, look forward to your response and thanks for the great content

    • @carlitosgomez71
      @carlitosgomez71 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can control the volume from the TV hdmi it can also carry more channels at a higher bit rate, optical tops out at 24bit 192khz which is plenty for most

      Also lip synchronisation. Often you will find the audio is way ahead of the picture, and many times it varies depending on the source content, so fixed audio delays don’t help. If you have a big tv or projector, you will absolutely need it. I might be wrong though because eARC (as opposed to ARC) is the standard that guarantees lip sync - on my arcam sa30 and bluesound node, it is eARC.

    Like you, I’d prefer to have an integrated over tons of boxes and wires. I’m wondering how a 7000a would compare to my current setup…Emotiva DC-1 preamp/dac, emotiva xpa-1L mono blocks, driving Sonus Faber Lumina V? Would the 7000a give me the same or better performance without as much clutter? If not, would going to the 9000 get me there? Separation is really important to me, I love hearing all the different layers

    You hit on the nail, at least when it comes to my take on Audiolab products. I've been interested in their gear and almost bought the 6000 a, but the lack of tone controls kept me from doing so.
    I would like to know more of your take on your experiment with the minidsp. I'm wondering if the a/d to d/a process in the minidsp changes the sound/quality of the Audiolab. I don't if you remember but I asked something similar during the last live chat you guys had. Except, I want to use a minidsp flex. I know the flex is its own thing but I hear it has higher-performing circuitry than the standard minidsp and I want it to be as transparent to my Mac as possible. My plan would be to ignore the flex's volume control and use it like a normal minidsp 2x4 HD.
    By the way, that pre/power mode is a cool feature. You don't see that too often. Similar to the pre-out/ amp in jumpers on my Mcintosh and Outlaw RR2160 MKlI, a feature that makes these units so flexible. I find that I want more than just tone controls, I want granular frequency controls. Until they start putting parametric eq in integrateds, I need pre-outs/main ins or at the very least pre-outs to into a DSP unit and then into a power amp.

    11:21 if there was an integrated amp without optical/hdmi people would be upset. It's true, and even I would protest until I bought and Accuphase E380 integrated with no phono, no dac, no sub out, no hdmi, no optical. Just RCAs and XLRs. Oddly higher end stuff is very stripped down.

    Another great review guys and one I've been looking forward to. I think you may even be first to review the new Audiolab 7000A. I have a question, perhaps you can answer. From a purely audio quality perspective, does the 6000A and 7000A sound pretty much the same? And is the 6000A discontinued or does it remain in the product lineup. Thanks for any clarification on this that you can provide. Thx again.

    Thanks for the great review. I am going to replace my Powernode with the Adiolab (in combination with the Wiim Mini)!
    @The comparison of Powernode and Audiolab. I guess one of the downsides of the Audiolab is that it does not have a sub out and that you can't adjust the crossover. This was is a really neat feature of the Powernode. Probably, another reason for the miniDSP (great idea btw)
    * Reasons: My set up is a bit weird: DJ Mixer + Phono + TV. The Bluesound Powernode seemed to be a device that could do it all but the problem is that the analogue phono input is being digitized. This causes a small delay which makes the amplifier unusable as a DJ Aplifier because the headphone-out of the mixer and speaker-out are never in sync. This is probably a very rare use case but I am now hoping for the Audiolab to jump in.

    Thanks for the great review guys, though i'm sitting to the same side with those who say "why oh why didn't they put in tone controls or DSP". Its a modern AMP, with HDMI for home cinema.. Its not reasonable not to have room correction software.. Hey audiolab.. just put dirac to the damn thing and price it +500€ and you can have my money anytime!
