    Telling people why the PvE failed without even mentioning the state ActiBlizz was in with Bobby Kotick in control and how it affected the OW Team is leaving half of the story untold. There are several accounts about how Kotick would sabotage the OW team during the hiatus and basically left the team and game to rot.

    OW's PVE was never going to succeed without a bigger team. Jeff Kaplan was adamant about having a smaller team to work on both the PVE and Live Service aspect while Bobby offered more staff to work on both.
    Its impossible to develop new characters, new maps, new abilities and balancing everything while also developing a PVE mode that's supposed to incorporate all the aforementioned stuff with extensive skill trees and builds for each new character on top of also maintaining the live service with skins, content, etc. If they had kept the PVE Concise and not this Vacuum of "its endless with the characters and post launch stuff" and just made it a standalone game like League's single player games, then it could have been created. But with the amount of stuff they had to do alongside it, it was never going to happen.

I mean if they're not going to do new stuff anytime soon if ever, at least give us what was already created. I don't play comp and if I do it's casual so I can learn and rank, but even then I haven't touched comp in maybe close to a year. PVE does interest me very much as a break to quick play and the arcade offerings. I think it's crazy how so many players out there DO want PVE and missions like that, but Blizzard says no one is interested. I want to know who no one is? Everyone I talk to and even in my group on Facebook all say we wish this was back etc....Events aren't fun anymore. Nothing is new and nothing to get hyped about. Even now with the "anniversary" going on it's still VERY crappy. No good offerings, no bringing back the past, nothing. The opening splash screen is great with all the heroes, but why not bring back the classic OW music??? I HATE the bland dull sound that start up brings. Bland opening to me only foreshadows what's coming ahead....bland.

    Something I wanna add about retribution: rialto released the same time as retribution, so we were essentially in unfamiliar territory as the map was fresh. The same goes for storm rising and havana. However, storm rising followed the same route you would take if you were to play havana on attackers side. Not to mention retribution had more areas open that werent previously accessible if you were to just play rialto.

  • @FraserSouris
    @FraserSouris 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I've always felt that PvE in Overwatch was a tall order even in the best case. Trying to make it a mode in conjunction with OverWatch PVP would have made it extremely challenging to pull off.
    For one, consider replayability and time content. PVP has the advantage that other players provide fresh new content every match. And when you add new heroes and maps, it has a knock on effect where it can freshen everything else up. You also have progression and unlocks that carry over between matches even if it's just cosmetic.
    PVE works differently. A single level isn't as inherently replayable. Cutscenes and voice lines will get old when they are heard multiple times. AI enemies aren't as varied. The shooter games that make PVE, especially with coop, work like PayDay 2, Left 4 Dead and Borderlands because have enough content and options upfront that it's at least a while before you get replays/repeats and by the time you do, there might be some new modifier or challenge that can mix it up. Or even new content gets released to add to the pool of available content.
    It's kinda the same requirements a lot of gacha and MMO games face. You can't get by on a barebones setup like you can with PVP because you need a lot more PVE content to replicate the same variety as PVP content.
    And we saw this happen with Payday 3 and CODMW2019's Spec Ops Modes. They had so little content on release that it wasn't enough to sustain those modes and players went to other games or to PVP in the case of COD.
    So that's the first issue with a dedicated Owerwatch PVE. It needs more content and resources than PVP. And from a business POV, you could throw those resources into PVP and get more content and more revenue from players.
    The second issue is: "who is it for?" Making a PVE mode based on how characters are setup based in PVP constrains a lot of what you can do.
    Like, lets say you want to replicate the mission "All Ghillied up" from COD MW1 2007 but in an Overwatch PVE mission starring Widowmaker. Well, you need to rework Widow's kit significantly to allow her to use other weapons and tools/grenades as well as use stealth against enemies. You can't have it be coop since the cutscenes, slower story sections and set pieces can't really work with other players. Even if you attach a fantastic story and lore behind it, then that mission is essentially a one and done affair. The work you do on reworking Widow can't be applied to other characters with entirely different kits.
    The people that love the lore and story will get a kick out of it, but players aren't going to be replaying it. Plus the appeal of the story and stealth will lose its lustre on repeat playthroughs.
    This is why a lot of Overwatch's PVE missions are some variation of "coop shoot through enemies while wacky stuff is happening around you" with few cutscenes or direct story sequences. Being a coop game with such radically different characters limits how you can tell the story. Which is why Borderlands defaulted to using audio logs so much for its story and why the player character often isn't the "main agent" in the plot.
    This means if you are a lore fan, the PVE missions' setup means it's inefficient to tell stories compared to just having it in a comic or short film. If you're a gameplay fan, there are other games where there's more variety. Even in the PVP mode of the same game.

    "Why Overwatch's PVE failed"
    To put it in a single word: "Kotick." To put it in many more, interference from corporate up in Activision demanded the devs prioritize the dogshit monetization of the game so the investors could see big profit numbers instead of them giving a shit about the actual end product. Once again corporate bullshit ruins something that could have been fantastic.
    It was no fault of the devs, it was corporate meddling, trying to push stupid crap like OWL (Kotick's baby he managed to sucker other millionaires who had nothing to do with gaming into investing into) as a legitimate eSport and egregiously priced battle passes and cosmetics. It was a top-down failure, simple as.

    • @yomismo2689
      @yomismo2689 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, for what we know now, Kotick wanted to hire haundreds of new devs for ow to develop OW2 while still mantaining OW1 Multiplayer, but Jeff said "Nope"...
      I just don't undestand that decition.

    • @yomismo2689
      @yomismo2689 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you want the source, this was said by Jason Schreier (an impirtant videogame journalist) on reddit some days ago, he will develop this more on his next book where he analyzes the state of Blizzard and its recent history.

    • @JBoehmGames
      @JBoehmGames 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@yomismo2689 So, yeah, that is new information, but a lot of it also boils down to trying to milk as much money out of a situation as possible, and throwing as much money at a problem as necessary in a hasty effort to fix it, both were things that Kotick was guilty of.
      I understand that Jeff's decision was not "business-savvy", but that's kind of the whole thing with what's happened to Blizzard in general: one of their old trademark phrases was "Release date: When it's Ready." They didn't care how long something took so long as the final product was something that they could be proud of, versus nowadays where they're being made to churn out as much as possible to get as much money as possible, which was the driving decision behind the death of OW2's PVE and emphasis on purchasing heroes or the battle pass or overpriced skins.
      Kotick wanted to hire on dozens of devs (that he'd likely can once they were done) because he thought it'd get the game out faster and thus get the money faster, without any consideration for the end product or the chemistry of the development team already in place.
      I actually respect Jeff's choice to deny additional devs on an artistic standpoint, because teams are very fickle things. To make something truly great, your team needs to be in harmony, and a sudden influx of new blood can throw that off completely and result in an unproductive work environment. If new blood was trickled in, instead of an all-at-once surge, that might be a different story.
      There's also the fact that they dropped Overwatch 2's announcement prematurely, likely to cover up and try to distract people from the Blitzchung incident that had transpired a few months prior. It's a pattern they've been following a lot in the past 5 years too, whenever there's controversy with Blizzard, they reveal a new character or something along those lines to distract from the controversy. Had they not announced the game prematurely (maybe announce it at 2022 blizzcon or something instead) and kept OW2 on a slow burn for a concrete 2024 release while keeping focus on Ow1's development cycle, I feel like things would have turned out differently.
      You're right there was more nuance than what I said, but I still firmly believe that Kotick was the root of most of the problems at Blizzard, and the recoveries games like Ow2 and WoW are seeing feels like proof of that.

    Wacraft 3 on the other side they told us we get a new game with new cut scenes etc.
    yes we got a new game but without the cutscenes and even stole the creators content when it game to maps.
    The created a new rule that if you upload your maps which you created yourself for other players for wc3 you will lose your rights for them and then they are blizzards maps.

    For me, the biggest reason I enjoyed Overwatch WAS the story. The way the characters interacted with each other, the way the maps had small bits of world building built into their very core, the fact that you could envision what each character would be like in any given situation because of how well crafted most of them were. When we finally got the PvE missions I was still happy! Sure, it wasn't exactly what we'd dreamed of and the gameplay was pretty boring at times but the fact that we got to see how characters fit into the story of Overwatch, the fact that we finally got full-on animated cut scenes in-game and the fact that you could tell something was being built up, it was all so perfect. Then, after the announcement of PvE's full cancellation, I kinda gave up caring. Overwatch just wasn't what I liked anymore. It made me sad to think that, no matter how often I personally push for PvE or story drops or animated shorts or a Tv Show, it was all in vain.
    I hope one day we can see the proper revival of the Overwatch Story cause it's such a good one. We'll finally see the decision Hanzo had to make, Orisa can finally prove her worth, Sombra's master plan can finally be thought out, Doomfist can finally have character development past "I'm a big strong guy", Ramatra's story can finally be told, Symmetra can do something, so many of the new characters can have a chance to shine like Juno or Weaver. Every single character deserves to have their story told in Overwatch because they all have the potential to actually shake up the gaming industry.
    It's baffling to me that a company the size of Activision Blizzard doesn't have enough people to help develop a story mode for a game that was once so well received to changed the very space of gaming as we know it. Surely, with Microsoft buying ActiBlizz and Overwatch's PvP getting to a state that's not hot piles of steaming flaming garbage, we can one day see a proper game for Overwatch's story. Whether that be in Overwatch 2 or a completely different game, I honestly couldn't care less. I just want to see this story get the love it deserves.

    The only reason I started playing OW is because the story missions that were promised to come along with the sequel. Now what I'm playing is a pvp game with just 3 story missions nobody queues for since they either never bought them or have already completed them, and I'm left to rot with FoMO over all the Archives missions that could satisfy some of that desire, but have never returned for new players to try. Not to mention the pvp gameplay itself having next to no real loop to it or rewards system besides swiping a credit card once a week

    God, I loved that game. I just don't like games that have no PvE options - PvE's where I go to warm up before PvP and relax if things start getting too sweaty. If there's no PvE, it's way harder to start playing and I leave way sooner. I played both Overwatch and Battleborn when they launched, and I gotta say, Battleborn was my favorite and it wasn't even close.

    the main reason i didn’t care at about PvE in OW2 at all is they scrapped that whole super complex upgrade system with like 100 upgrades per character spread across 3 main archetypes per character, allowing you to build characters into new characters. like reins upgrades would have been focused around making him either a melee beserker or a team protector, and there was a upgrade tree for soldier all about support, allowing you to turn him into a pseudo lucio or brig kind of healer. i love upgrade trees in games and if it was added and maybe even a PvP mode with them, i would have loved it. there was even an upgrade for junkrat that gave him an extra arm holding ANOTHER grenade launcher

    The reason is literally just that blizzard cancelled it. There’s no nuance, no “story”, it’s literally just blizzard cancelled it. Prior PvE events were amazing, fun, silly, etc. and each had interesting mechanics even if they were limited. It was fun! The promised PvE was majorly hype. It didn’t “fail”, it was clear the majority of the player base wanted it. Blizzard just decided “y’know what? We’ve taken all your money, now we’re just not gonna give you what you paid for”

    If there was one thing about the PVE i did NOT LIKE, it was how the only way things got difficult was when everything turned into 5000 hp bullet sponges. It killed the power fantasy of the heroes and it made even the most powerful characters feel like they did lackluster damage. obviously killing bots isnt gonna be the same as players, but players had just the right amount of durability and damage to feel threatening but rewarding to kill.

    It pains me to think about all the PvE controversy again but there isn’t much I or any of us can do about it. I do still hope that a tv show or something similar could be made with the signature overwatch style that continues and finishes the planned story.
    Also fun fact, if you can somehow break into the area on kings row where Underworld takes place, the entire area has collision with a few black voids scattered about. There are custom game codes that allow this and I think it’s odd but cool that these areas, despite being unreachable, still have areas to walk much like on many maps such as kings row with the main one being the flat top next to Big Ben/the clock tower

    At least we now have a better picture of why PvE was canned. All of it was Jeff Kaplan’s baby, he wanted to really put the 2 in OW2. However, he was very adamant that Team 4 be small. Bobby Kotick wanted to hire more people to Team 4. While Kotick was right that more people should be hired, his thinking was more in line of CoD and that more people would get it done faster. Kaplan still had the failure of Titan fresh in his mind and thought that new people would pull direction away from what he wanted for OW2 so no new people were hired. If they could’ve found the middle ground, they could’ve still updated OW1 post Echo but also had people work on OW2. Another part is that an exec(can’t remember his name) asked why they had so many people for things like cinematics. They responded that players liked cinematics. Of course, when people were laid off, the cinematic people were gone.

    PvE has been canceled because it was too expensive to produce, it's really that simple. The fact that the devs were kinda slow (which is ... bound to happen in some cases, nothing wrong with that especially with Blizzard) didn't helped Activision execs believing that they shouldn't focus on PvP, which was already making bucks
    I still think it was a mistake ... Fortnite has a single shop and tons of gamemodes. I know a lot of people who aren't into PvP games but immediately expressed their interest towards a coop pve mode. Sure, making a great PvE experience would have been expensive, but I'm sure it would have been worth it

    Overwatch really makes me cry. This is an amazing world with amazing characters with a tagline about heroes and being heroes yet the entire game is a bunch of ppl who are suppose to be saving the fucking world..... Fighting over spots in a map or picking a cart from one side of the map to the other. This is why I've gained such a distain for pvp as a whole. I seriously didn't hate pvp in the past because cod is a boring military game and games like it don't interest me overall. Now though we have so many great idea and premises like overwatch, valorant, apex the list goes on where these amazing characters with histories, friendships, dreams, etc that get made just so they can exist in an endless deathmatch.
    It pisses me off that this is continually done and ppl accept lore and cinematics and skins as a consolation prize. Why should devs like Blizzard care to make an actual game where something is ACTUALLY DONE with these characters when they can lie and break promises, have the playerbase dog them for a couple months, then go back to business as usual.

    I feel like the biggest blue balled moment for me, has been Overwatch. I hate PVP, I suck at playing against other people, so I stick to PVE, but years ago I watched the Overwatch cinimatics, I LOVED them. And when the Archive missions came out I was excited, sadly they were only out for the Archive event, so I bought Overwatch1 and played every Archive event, occasionally played AI PVP, but it wasn't the same, then they announced Overwatch 2 with Zero Hour, and I went to buy a bunch of loot boxes to support the game and get as many cosmetics as I could get to have cosmetic options for most of the heroes. Then we all waited and waited. Overwatch 2 released and I was disappointed we had to wait another year for PVE, in the mean time I put together a playlist with all cinimatics and even audio readings of the comics so I could binge through it all just before the PVE released. I had fun with the PVE and the story was great, downside was that it got very repetetive. THen I waited, and waited, for months, and heard the rest of the PVE got canned, and now while I still love the cinimatics I feel so cheated and blue balled, the story was setting up Overwatch to be ruinited, I was excited to see where these potential plot threads could go, and now, nothing. So far nothing seems to be what will carry the story forward. And now it's just resignation, I don't even care to play the game any more aside from checkign out new characters, but what's the fucking point?
