This is my SE Everyday, which I picked up a few days ago at a bike shop. It’s a solid entry level BMX bike, which costs around $300. This likely puts me in the same situation as you, whether you’re hopping on a BMX for the first time, or picking up the sport again after years of hiatus.
Let’s take a look at my SE. Notice the steel frame, the heavy duty 3-piece crank, the compact drivetrain, and the two-piece handlebars. These are the features you’ll find on almost ANY decent BMX bike today, but there are lots of other parts of the setup to consider, like brakes vs no-brakes, pegs, how many pegs, etc. We’ll get into all of that stuff later on, but right now all you need to know is that a good BMX will be really heavy duty.
This is because even the best BMX riders fail over and over and over again until they pull a new trick. Here’s me when I was like 16 years old. See? I didn’t even check the bike to see if it was okay.
In BMX, if you aren’t falling, you aren’t progressing, period. This isn’t to say you’ll always get hurt when you fall. In fact, learning to fall properly is something that comes with practice, but the main point is that you won’t have time to worry about your bike when you’re on a collision course with the ground.
We will be touching on some of the finer points of falling in this series.
It’s been a few days since I bought my SE, and I’m starting to get used to it. At first I was looping out like crazy on manuals and bunny hops, but now the bike is starting to feel somewhat normal to me. It feels awesome to ride some street again.
Compared to a mountain bike or even a trials bike, it feels really stiff, and twitchy, all in a good way though. Even if you haven’t started to learn tricks yet, it’s important to get a lot of riding time in on your new bmx just so you can get a feel for the geometry, the steering, and the overall ride.
We’re going to start with basic techniques like manuals and bunny hops, and then we’ll learn how to not die at the skatepark. Then we’ll learn how to fly. Finally, we’ll move on to intermediate skills like 360’s, wall rides, and combos. All of this stuff is fully attainable in your first year of BMX, as long as you’re in good shape and can put in the riding time.
In the next video, we’ll learn about BMX maintenance, what tools to use, and some of the things you’ll need to adjust as you ride your new BMX. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

Sorry for the hoarse throat guys...I figured it would be better to just post it rather than wait until tomorrow to record the voiceover. I drove 30 minutes to the skatepark yesterday and realized I forgot my wallet and license at home, so I started screaming at the top of my lungs...knowing it would be 30 minutes back home, and another 30 back to the skatepark. That fit of rage was my inner child just wanting to ride bmx again and needing to wait a WHOLE HOUR to do it!

Just bought a BMX, went to ride it off the curb out front of the store and looped out to spinal. Figured it would be easy to transition from a mountain bike - definitely world's apart. It's like picking up a saxophone and thinking you can play it because you play guitar. At least I get to watch some classic videos and learn from Seth!

Love your channel , mostly started watching it because I'm getting back on to a bike after many years. Going the mtb route. Used to ride freestyle and bmx 20 years ago, and I find it stupid funny at 37 And pushing 300lbs ( hence why I'm gonna ride again) that I still to this day can hop on a 20" and bust a 180 😂

nice riding. I have a 20" trials bike and find it very easy to do manuals on, the front end is so light
wallrides on a BMX just seem crazy to me. Just ordered a bike yesterday, my first bmx. If i could someday land a wallride on a bike ill be pretty happy with myself. I can do them a skateboard, one of my favorite tricks.

Well mainly you and some other peeps on YT inspired me to get a BMX, bought the new 2017 Haro midway last weekend. Took a bit getting used to coming from my 29er hardtail for the last year and not having ridden a non sus bike for YEARS! Haven't nailed any tricks yet tho I did try doing a manual on the store's brand new fresh out of the box Haro interstate, let's just say it ended with me on my butt and the bike skidding a couple meters on the ground WOOPS? (luckily no one saw :P )
Oh well been taking it slow since, I can do some small hops and starting to get more comfortable riding it in general.
Long story short, thank you for this is now my second bike in my growing collection ''bikes =x+1'' ;) and I can see this is going to be a very fun bike.

Hey Seth im new to bikes. Used to ride as a kid literally everyday and want to revisit. You have inspired me to get back into it. Im thinking about buying a BMX but am having a hard time finding the right BMX bike as my first. What should I look for, and what brands are known for durability?
Yo man you should definitely make another bmx on the trail video!!! I only have a bmx and that's all I ride on trails. It's super fun in the right paths and terrain and I want people to know that is doesn't take an expensive mountain bike to have some fun in the good outdoors

Seth, if you make more BMX videos, can you explain more about the handling and body positioning? I've noticed people hold the bmx bars really in the center. I used to ride bmx years ago and didnt hold it that way. Now I ride downhill but i want to go back to bmx.

i'm 41 and cannot so much as wheelie/bunnyhop. i did buy a bmx a few years ago but still didn't learn how to do anything on one (not the bikes fault,my own self consciousness i suppose at riding a bmx).the desire to get another bmx is still there though for some reason.

I am a normal mountain biker and I saw this as decided to get a se everyday for myself but I am still kinda of new, I can bunny hop both American and English and get almost 8 inches off the ground I'm wondering how to take it to the next level up and how to start learning tricks. nice series, dude i ride mtb and speed and now watching this i wanna try bmx. but turns out im almost 6'3 and slightly under 220lbs. I have many doubts if i will tear it apart if i ride one, eventhough i know i will wear the bike pieces faster, i dont wanna to break it every time i try to ride. Any thougts?

I just started BMX, i won't say i'm very good at bunny hops. Though i can do them, i'm just too scared to fall. I fell like 5 times and noticed it wasn't so bad to fall, but i still keep getting scared when i'm about to do it.

I'm considering buying my first real bmxbike from fitbike co. Since I come from the roadie scene. They offer a coaster wheel version and the guys at the shop are ravin about it. A good choice? Bike is around $440.
