      Completely agree, blind optimism is incompatible with reality and so is crude pessimism.
      A careful evaluation of your own capacities and of the challenges ahead of you and a realistic and objective guess of the outcome is far more productive than butting in with naive optimism or brooding in a pool of pessimism.

    The main advantage of getting up early isn't necessarily that you 'gain time' in the day. It's that you have the hours in the morning to yourself with no distractions and it gives you more agency.
    I go to bed about 10.30, wake up at about 6 and the time I have before a school is so much more productive and generally satisfying than after school, or the couple of hours I used to have in the evening instead.

    • @liam.porritt
      @liam.porritt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Hi Edward! Yeh - I maybe didn't make enough of a clear point of that - you're definitely right on this... I think for me, while I gained the benefits of limited distractions at the start of the day, my slightly lower levels of focus due to tiredness probably counteracted any benefit there. That said, I will try it again after an earlier bed time, and perhaps then I'll feel the benefits of a completely distraction-free morning much more 😃

    • @edparker1143
      @edparker1143 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @G Ha in my experience the time you gain in the morning is more productive and valuable than the time you lose in the evening.

      @@oscarwithers5017 I have woken up at 5am and love it. Some tips are to get 7 hours of sleep at least. When you wake up dont click snooze. When you wake up get up, splash water on your face, put all the lights on and get some food. In 20 mins you wont be that tired. It is also to stick with it because within 2 weeks it will be part of your routine. Finally wake up at that time 7 days a week as it will make your sleep schedule much better and you. wont notice tiredness:)

      @BlameSocietyBSP 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oscarwithers5017 Have a light-based alarm, especially for winter. Have a normal sound based alarm aswell. When the sound alarm goes off, get up with zero doubts or excuses. If you lie in bed for 5 minutes it's game over. Treat everyday like you're getting up early because it's your first day at your new job. Within a month or two you'll be used to getting up early. You'll also be used to being in bed by 10.

I get a lot of time to workout and study . Its just amazing.

    I’ve been waking up at 6am this past week just for a challenge to myself for mental toughness. But i could never do 5, that’s still night time. But testing these things out really help with finding an ideal time to wake up. In my experience I think I’m going to start putting my alarm at 6:30 and then let myself have a nice slow morning routine until 7:30 and start studying.
    Having this time in the morning where I’m by myself I found really nice and calming since I’m introvert and being in the house with my family for so long is actually quite tiring.

    Hey enjoyed the video been trying this recently couple of things I think you should have done/ considered before your final decision. 1 you have to get enough sleep. 2 you get used to it like anything and it needs to be consistent. 3 you have to sleep earlier but as you mentioned you value your late nights soft family and social reasons fair. 4 Maybe consider doing this over a week or so I think you will find a much higher gain in productive minutes as well as quality of study 5 try to eat at regular meal times with the rest of the world for example when you wake up don’t go straight for breakfast maybe a coffee and fruit for 2 hours then have breakfast lunch dinner and maybe a light snack before dinner. 6 I have found the focus and quality of work especially in the first 6 hours to be so great! 7 have scheduled breaks try the pomodoro method either 50/10 or 45/15 have been good for me they keep you focused and you don’t just take a break when you get tired, find things hard or loose focus you know a break is coming up. Also don’t forget long breaks too maybe 1 hour for lunch and late afternoon or evening another 2 - 3 hours spaced according to your schedule and what works well. Great video mate! :)

    Feeling tired because you probably still aren't used to it. Ive been doing it for months now and it gets a lot easier. Even now do it on the weekend. The secret is to go to bed early and get the hours in. I'm in bed by 8:30pm, Asleep by 9pm and when my Alarm goes off at 4:30 am, i do hit the snooze a couple of times but i believe this is out of habit. I leave for work by 5:30am and am into the office by 6:15. that 90mins i get alone is what sets me up for the day.

    Waking up at around 4-5 AM is a little hard to get used to! I did it in increments (woke up at 5:00 for a week, then at 4:30 the next, and then finally at 4:00 am on the third week). I love studying at this hour, as my mind is fresher, compared to staying up late at night.
    Then again, I juggle work and grad school, so apart from early mornings and the weekends, I don’t have a lot of study time! So yes, I really have to make the most of it. I mostly rest when I arrive home from work or class. :)

    I love waking up at 5 because it's the only time of the day I have completely to myself which makes it so easy to do whatever I want without any distractions. However, I think it's always important to prioritise sleep over getting up early, because you literally will not be able to do anything properly whilst tired. I usually go to bed around 10-10:30 to get up at 5 - for law school, personally this is much better for me because my focus is so much better early in the morning.

    • @liam.porritt
      @liam.porritt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh - I think this point about distractions is absolutely true 👌, and something I maybe should have considered more! I think for me, because I was tired when I first woke up, I really lost out on the big benefits of having focused time with no distractions a little. But, I will definitely try this again at some point in the future and try and get to bed pretty early (10:30 ish), so I can hopefully get the full benefits of that distraction-free time! How do you find going to bed at 10 - 10:30 - as in do you find that difficult with doing stuff outside your studies, socially?

    • @briannakaitlyn3893
      @briannakaitlyn3893 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liam.porritt At the moment, I don't find it difficult socially because of lock down - but ordinarily, not really. I would only go out socially on Friday or Saturday, and I wouldn't wake up till 8 or 9, then get started with work. The reason people get up so early is so they can spend time on their selves, spend time on personal projects, or just have some quality me time. I find this time much more fulfilling than they time I would find it in the evening. In the evening I tend to just be tired and end up watching Netflix or scrolling on my phone, while those things are much harder to justify in the morning.

    Perfect for note taking and can personalize what color you want to out on the barrel.. With many color options on their refills. A bit pricey, but for sure, quality output it produces.

    if your gonna be waking up at 5am, it is so important that you have at least 7-8 hours of sleep, so going to at 10pm or earlier, if you going to bed at midnight or later, dont eve bother waking up at 5 its not worth to deprive you body of those valuable 2-3 hours of sleep. also get your self an ipad and digitised all those notes, it will make it so much easier to find specific part in notes when your studying

    As a secondary school student in Malaysia, it’s a norm for us 😌 waking up at 5am, sleeping at 12am and we don’t eat breakfast, school ends at 2pm, extracurricular activities, tuitions, homework and assignment 😌 Asians go through this everyday and we don’t even talk so much about it

    I once tried to wake up at 2am every morning. I did this because I wanted to be by my computer during the night time, but I didn't want to ruin the next day. It worked perfectly for me, granted, I had to go to sleep at 6-8pm. It's also only possible if you have a flexible schedule

    Sadly, I have to wake up at 4 AM to commute to my job and I think it's the toughest thing I have ever had to do. I think the worst part of it is that I do not have a clear separation between the days that is because I am also a student so I have classes right after coming from work until 8 PM. After that I have to prepare my lessons until 11 PM. Therefore, this is the reason why it can get depressing from time to time and I sometimes get the sense that apart from the weekend there's no real distinction between days since I only get around 5 hours of sleep at best.

    Ever since I joined Gym, in 2008 , I began waking up at 5. Earlier it was a problem, but now I have time for myself & I never feel like I need more sleep. So everyone trying this should know , All the TH-cam guys tries for a week or a month, but that’s not enough. Try by yourself for atleast a few 3-4 months then one can get used to it.

    I wake up every day at 6:30 which seems to be the right time for me. If I would have lectures and seminars right now it would fit my schedule perfectly (which is important to consider, as you did). I've tried getting up earlier and also later but it never worked that well for me, especially getting up earlier because than I can't get my daily sport and brain-dump time into my schedule because by the evening I'm way too tired (although I do not plan the things as strict as you do, at least not with uni being closed).
    Really good video and finally a British person who pronounces Poltergeist in perfect German :D

      Hehe - glad my German was on point 😋 But no, seriously - thank you very much! Yeh - I think I'm in the same boat as you - I feel like around 06:30am is a good time to wake up on a daily basis. As I said, I reckon maybe once every couple of weeks, getting up at 5am after an early night might work really well to get lots of relatively low intensity tasks done, but otherwise I agree - around 6:30 feels about right for me too!

    I feel like this experiment was more about how well you can manage a day with less sleep than normal, rather than going to bed and getting up earlier :) You would probably have to do it for at least a few days, and try to get in the right amout of sleep even though you wake up earlier, in order to actually do this experiment haha
