    When I was a kid, my dad fired his forge with douglas fir bark. He told me that they couldn't get coal during the war so they used what they had. Through trial and error, they found that Doug fir bark worked best. My dad also said that after the war, he never saw a need to go back to using coal. It was my job to break the bark up into small enough pieces for him to use.

    Wow this forge just sold me. It answers all the dilemmas that kept me from starting my forge.
    We both have are day jobs and two children do raise. I couldn't find a decent way not to drag the family logistics into going with a coal or propane forge.
    But this for is a game changer.
    Thank you for this post!

      Can't speak foe Cody, of course, but it would seem only fair to BUY one from the small family business that makes them. We need to buy from locally owned small businesses to encourage them and to keep our money circulating locally.

Zomax is also the name of an antibiotic.

    I dont get why more people dont use charcoal or wood. It worked for smiths for hundreds or even thousands of years. As a hobby smith its all Ive used. Coal is hard to come by in south FL, lol. You can mix charcoal and wood if the wood isnt the best quality even. Thats a nice forge design though.

    Great video, nice product spotlight.
    I looked at these when I started out and decided to build something from stuff I already had. I'm sure these work fine, IMHO the angled feed is what makes them unique.
    I have used hardwood lump charcoal in my older forge with a homemade hand crank blower and it worked pretty good. I'm pretty sure coal and charcoal should be interchangeable, but I may be wrong.
    I have pretty much stuck with coal in my newer plow disc forge, I posted a video of it. IMHO the heat seems more concentrated and doesn't seem to radiate out as much as charcoal. It lasts longer and goes out quicker instead of continuing to burn also. My chimney is working and I have had good luck getting it in the Southern US as long as that continues I will use it. I am going to start to make my own charcoal though, just to have when/if I cant get it anymore.
    thanks for sharing the video.

    Our studio bought one of these forges a year or so ago. They work just fine, but To me it's not as pleasurable to use as coal or propane. It's very vey hot to use and it's always smoking, unlike coal. But it does get the metal hot and works. Small forge welds do work but anything much bigger than 5/8s and the forge was so hot it was hard to stand close enough to crank the blower.

  • @seigeengine
    @seigeengine 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    No advantages?
    Coal may not be necessary for hobbyists, but it's definitely a better material for forging.
    Propane offers the advantage of rapid response heat
    And charcoal would be far more efficient on both your material and time while forging, but if you're concerned about where it's coming from, you can always produce it yourself.
    Not saying this is a bad idea, but there are definite disadvantages to this approach.

      muh1h1 much of our coal comes from the Appalachian mountains here on the east coast. West Virginia has some of the best anthracite coal in the world. Very hard and burns hot. You can get cheaper softer coals but hard coal burns much cleaner and longer so it does cost more. That wood forge is such a great idea! Amazing that you don't even need to make your own charcoal!

    • @Whitloxhomestead
      @Whitloxhomestead 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vinland Yes, it gets hot enough for hardening. You only need to get the metal to about 1400 degrees for that, and even an unfanned wood fire can reach that. The fanned coals reach 2200+. It is difficult to see the colors of the hot metal in the bright sunlight, so hard to say temperature from the video.

    If you have lots of wood available you would be better off making charcoal outside of the forge in large quantities and then burn it in this forge.. There are lots of videos on making charcoal on TH-cam. That forge would do a lot better with charcoal.

    • @truebluekit
      @truebluekit 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frank B Hi, I have a question or two, you've got me curious.
      Considering that the wood at the bottom of the fire would be charcoal anyway, why bother making charcoal first if you're going to be using this particular wood fired forge? Wouldn't making the charcoal be extra work that could be skipped altogether?
      Thanks.

    • @PTMOFF
      @PTMOFF 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +truebluekit Little late. But the "charcoal" that forms in the bottom of a wood fired forge isn't really the same as properly made charcoal. Actual charcoal isn't made in an open flame, so vs. just burning it through, you are changing the structure of the wood. Properly made charcoal can burn very hot, hot enough to melt down ore and to forge weld. As far as raw wood, not proper lump charcoal, even at the best of times I could only ever get orange. So that's pretty much it. Proper charcoal burns hotter and more efficiently than normal wood, as lump charcoal isn't really made in the depths of an open fire, but rather in an inclosed area.

    • @truebluekit

      I use to make my own charcoal but honestly it was too time consuming for me. it's just easier and simpler to feed wood into the forge. it does the work for me.

    Not withstanding the young lady. The system looks like a good standby for the lean coal times. Nice concept.

      Anthony Lopardo Because real blacksmiths use coal and or propane, the claim was made this forge can reach welding heat, I'd like a demonstration from fire start to welding heat. this thing looks like a toy.
      If we'd stop lying about coal and shutting down a completely viable industry just so we can pay down our debt to China by sending all of our coal over there where they do not have any, ANY environmental controls at all (just google
      China pollution) and they are free to destroy their air, rivers, ocean with coal we gave them. But can we use the coal here? Not with the little Communist half breed in the white house playing Hitler. Did you know that a brand new port
      is being built right now north of Portland just to handle all the coal that is being sent to China. Here in Billings Montana we watch coal trains loaded to the hilt headed west every day. It's unbelievable how much is being shipped.
      I guess pollution is relative to location. Our now defunct coal burning facility's were the cleanest in the world but then
      who cares when your aim is to "necessarily make energy prices skyrocket"
