Hey Scott, I just found (and subscribed to) your channel searching for info on the 200-800 lens and the R7. I loved your video! Living on the gulf coast close to Pensacola, FL I think it’s fairly unlikely that I’ll ever experience the weather conditions in your video, lol. But it’s still good to know how durable the lens is. I’ll primarily be using the R7/200-800 combination to photograph the U.S. Navy Blue Angels practices and the 2 airshows they have every year here. I’ll be renting the lens before I buy it to see just how much of a challenge 700 mph jets are with that lens - I can’t wait! I’m looking forward to your future videos and I’m especially interested in the sharpness of the new lens. So far I’m very impressed! Stay warm up there and have a Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas. 🎄SO for sharpness...It will be more than good. the little RF 100-400 is extremely sharp also, so this lens will be ( and is) more than sharp enough. IQ as far as color rendition and contrast will be what I'll focus on the most. Thanks again for the kind words .
Just watching this again thanks Scott, I think it dispels the notion that you cannot use apsc cameras in low light conditions or that you must have large apertures, you just need to learn how to get the best from the equipment you have..👍
Thank you, Scott. I plan on using this lens with my R5 because, quite frankly, I don't care much for my R7. I guess I'll need to re-evaluate my thoughts on this. The photos you took are amazing. I'm really so surprised the lens performed so well during those weather conditions. I'm on the wait list for the lens from my local store, which didn't get any. 😢 By the way, your local store, Stuart's, looks like a fine store. Really nice. Congrats to the winners! Happy Holidays!!!
Stewarts Photo is amazing and some of the best folks ever there. The R7 is a great camera, just need to know how to sue it is all. Same with the Nikon Z9. And yes this lens helps up great in the tough conditions. Better than I expected.
I love how the title is weather sealing tested and the first thing you do is lay the lens in the snow 😂👍🏼. Great mini review and photos. It’s good to see this has good weather sealing despite not being an L lens.
😂 So researching the weather sealing points on the Rf 200-800 and it has about 19 points on it. The 100-500 has 15 points. The 200-800 is longer so may need more points, but that bodes well to me.
Merry Christmas, and enjoy the new lens. Here's a question I would appreciate an answer to when you do your review & comparison video: I already have a R6mk1 & R7 with the 100-500L and a 1.4L teleconverter, which I use for general telephoto use; I shoot big stuff and small stuff (from hummingbirds to grizzly bears). Am I good with my current combo or should I go for this new lens instead?
Thank you. I don't shoot wildlife as I simply don't have the lenses with range for my full frame bodies but do shoot a lot of sports, soccer. This lens may be overkill, but my 70-200 isn't cutting it when shooting opposite sides as i still gave to punch in and crop. This lenses cost is such that it simply makes sense. Maybe I will start birding after all if I get this. Do you see the sharpness comparable to your 100-500L? Considering it's not an L lens, I am seeing a lot of videos where reviewers are honestly calling out how sharp it is.
II did ask for you to test it in snow, so I appreciate you getting around to that so quickly. 😂 I do pair it mostly with my R7, not my R5. I like the "reach" you get on the R7. I usually have my RF 100-500 on my R5, that way I have coverage from 100mm to 1280mm available to me. I like to make my subjects as big as possible in the frame. I have only had one day of sunlight since I got mine on the 14th. I am really impressed with the lens.
It really is! And the fog/haze at even a shot distance makes exposure even more challenging. But I LOVE being able to high key. Example is the Musk OX. In the video you can see the fence, but once I bring the exposure up it melts away to give everything that dreamy look around the animal. just love it 🎄
Thanks for doing the video in such weather Scott 👍 Looking forward to a full work out v the 100-500 with the r7 body. You live in a low light area so it'll be a real test for the f9 aperture - we await your words if wisdom on this. Thanks again.
Thanks for the non-review! I don’t think I could put something so new at risk so quickly! Looking forward to your view of the lens on the R5, on full frame. Seems to me that that 100-500 is best for the R7 and that 1280mm equivalent is almost an insane amount of reach! Anyway enjoyed the vid.
I would like to see a comparison with a FF Camera, maybe with the R6II, between the 200-800 at 800mm and the 600/4 with 1.4 Extender at f/9. That would be great.
Thank you for this review with the R7(I know it’s not a total review, lol). I am impressed with the low shutter speed and the results you were getting with it due to the IS.
Wow! Weather sealing seems legit. Looking forward to some r6 mk.2 with the new 200mm to 800mm. Keep up all the awesome work my friend. From north central Ohio. Merry Christmas 🎅
Thanks! 👍Yes it held up well as it was a lot of ice, slush, wet. Every time I zoomed win and out I'd just hear "crunchhhhhh'. It was a but un-nerving lol.
Congrats to all the winners, on the new lens, I'd like to see some good light photos and videos with the R7. This still be my setup on my next Yellowstone trip and I'd like to have your input. Thanks
Haha, surprised the lens didn’t slide off the truck then we would have known how durable it is. Awesome video, enjoy and thanks for running the giveaways and keep up the great content. Those shots are seriously fire!
So far it's outperforming my expectations. In that light and snowfall, I expected to get kist garbage shots and was very surprised by the results. Even my 500 f4 would have been tough to shoot with in that stuff.
Interesting, Scott. One thing I noticed interesting studio segment. Is that a Smallrig cage on your R7. Do you use that mainly for protection or so you can mount external monitors etc?
I don't do a ton of them unless there's a lot of stuff in the box or a setup. I mainly unboxed it on camera as I didn't have much time and thought id do setae dialog for video un get the camera ready at same time. The snow was nuts lol 🎄
Wow Scott, unboxing the Alaskan way isn't suited for weak gear, hahah ! Really amazing what quality of shots you were getting in those conditions in just a few hours of using. pretty impressive man ! I intended to wait ordering this lens until Duade, Jan, you and Phil Tach had their full reviews out .. but after the smile and body language of Duade I could no longer resist ordering, but you now give me the confidence it will resist Belgian rain just fine. Australians aren't that good in testing against heavy snow and rain .. I'm getting the feeling the 100-500 still merits it's place, but once you'd use the 420-700 (with an extremely short throw) you might be better off using the 200-800 .. So far, the Nikon Z8/Z9 have the best sensor and some impressive lenses .. but getting handholdable near 1280mm with animal eye-AF seems like a distant dream in the Nikon world ..
@@WILDALASKA I'm well aware I have lots of your videos to catch up .. I didn't lose interest but you were very productive the last half year, while my time was constrained.
bring some of that snow over here! we havent had any snow stay on the ground winter so far :( Was thinking of grabbing the 100-500 but seeing the 200-800 is 1k cheaper here AND having more reach im debating myself. Having a higher ISO with these new cameras almost doesnt matter so I think i can take the hit in aperture for the extra reach + MUCH cheaper price. The decisions, the decisions.
Yes I saw that Lower 48 wasn't getting much snow. My brother is in Minnesota and they have nothing. We just got another 6" last night. We have set records on the Anchorage bowl this year well over 75" And remember the fstop is 2/3 of a stop difference not he 2 lenses at max focal. So IQ will be a deciding factor for me. The ~1.5lb weight difference doesn't matter to me much really, but some it may be.🎅 Thanks for watching
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. First, thanks so much for the Smallrig tool! I can't wait and I'll be in contact immediately. That's a very good first impression for this lens. I look forward to a more thorough review soon. Obviously I want a comparison with the 100-500: stabilization maybe most of all. Can I ask you, in the future, to look at the camera lens instead of the LCD? Once you get yourself framed up, just look at the camera. Thanks!
I'm be curious about comparing the performance of this lens on the R6II vs the 100-500 on R7. The latter combination on the long end should be equivalent to 800/11 on full frame, so this should give a 2/3 stop advantage and have a lot more ISO headroom even considering the full frame penalty.
You seemed to get some really good shots. I really liked the high key shot of that wolf (same photo in the thumbnail). I look forward to more videos on this lens.
Thank you. It's actually a red fox believe it or not. It's a marbled variety. Fur traders bred the crop fox variants to get a marbled variant for fur trade. She's a super cool fox to photograph.
Testing the R8 and just that subject. I have no issues with the R8 on my big white 500 F4 MKII with handheld video and that thing is over 7lbs in weight 🎅 So im expecting it to be ok
😂 Great video, you sure give your gear a good testing 😢 I’m in Sunny Australia 35 degrees today, so no Snow at all zero. I am patiently waiting for my lens to pair it with my R7, I am very encouraged by your words on this lens with the R7. Keep your great vids coming I just love them Merry Christmas 🎉.
I'm surprised that you used the R7 bare and no protection. It has the same multifunction shoe as the R3 and Canon recommends using the AD=E1 adaptor on that. I was out in light to medium rain 5 weeks ago with my R3 (no rain cover) and the LCD screen stopped working afterwards (and this is with an AD-E1 in use; wiped down when we got back to the car and we were only out in the rain for 5 minutes or so). The LCD screen did start working again 2 hours later, and it was probably just water drops on the EVF screen at a guess. Was a helluva scare for me though. Since Canon doesn't give an IP rating, there will be no more outings in the rain for this boy.
You need to go back and watch my video from last year on the Kodiak Bear trip. Used it ALL day in the rain and it survived for the most part. Mine has been very weather tolerant and it has to be here in AK. It either rains or snows most of the year.
@@WILDALASKA I saw those videos, but I am very weary now of any wet weather, at least until I get a Thinktank large rain cover. I'm on a fixed income and can't afford to have gear fucking up.
Looking forward to more of your experiences with the lens. R7 is the body I'm shooting. After you use it for a while I would like to hear your thoughts of this lens compared with the 100-500 on that R7 body. I have the 100-500 and am interested in how they compare.
Merry Christmas and thank you for the fox print 😊 Love the video and shots with the new lens. What kind of fox was this one? Reminded me of my little blue merle Sheltie. Christmas blessings to you!
It's a red fox, cross variant. Fur traders bred them to be all kinds of marbled colors. I think this one is actually called a marble fox variant. she is just gorgeous.
Thanks for the giveaway. I'll be looking forward to my new hat. One thing to point out to your viewers is to be aware of scammers. I got an email this morning from someone posing to be you from your channel, even had your thumbnail. They wanted me to text them. Normally these scams will tell you that you won then want money for shipping. We aware and don't text them.
I will do a lens/body comparison. Just remember, the one factor we add on these type comparisons is the color science of the camera manufacturer. SO IQ is hard to tell if it's the lens. SO ill have ton think how to frame the comparison due to that factor and Canon and Nikon color science is way different. And then add Sony in there and it goes another direction
Looking forward to the further videos on the 100-500 with the TC. Trying to figure if it is worth the money to upgrade from my 100-400 MK II and a 1.4 tc. A lot of money for a retired old fart on a fixed income. One question Scott that camo jacket you wear what brand is it? I need a new jacket my bright red parka is probably not the best for hiding from birds and wildlife. Keep up the good work. Jim Clark Seattle
It's a Simms Challenger Fishing Jacket amzn.to/3NCtBy8 It works great for winter or summer. I like it as it's tough and won't rip on the rocks and such. I just wear heavy layers under it in the winter
I may do the r6mkII later. But I will be dointhe R8 very soon (as I own it). It's basically same camera minus IBIS, so hopefully that will get close to what you are wanting to know. But I will get to the R6MKII in a few weeks. Lots to test.🎄
Friend, sorry for my technical English, i am from Russia, but i think, you can understand me. I have Sigma 150-600 5-6.3 and RF 100-400 f5.6-f8. F 6.3 is better than f8? Yes. But just one question. Where is better IS? With RF lens i can make shot with 1/40 on 400mm. In Sigma.....1/160 is impossible. With so nice IS you will have more light. And hier is same, i am sure. And with highspeed shot of electric shuter 1-3 photo of 15 of animal will be sharp even with so long 1/40,1/50,1/100:)
Need more words sir. Hard to understand what you are asking, but if it's F9 question go watch the video I made a few weeks ago about the 200-800 and f9. Basically I shoot f8 a LOT. so less than 1/3 of. stop is no issue @ 800mm as DoF is the main factor with aperture. Light gathering is second.
That will be challenging to capture the EVF as on Canon I can't see through the EVF or LCD on the camera only the Atomos monitor, but we will get it for you. I don't reprint an issue, but we'll see. Thanks for watching
Pretty cool shots for right out of the box. Pretty envious, preordered first day but no lens yet! Happy Christmas to Scott, looking forward to watching your channel in 2024.
You have been hacked, I just received a email saying I had won a RF 200 lens, they then asked for how I would like it shipped and what my charges would be. Watch out my friend. The address came from WILD ALASKA, same as yours.
My email address is not Wild Alaska. They spoof the email addresses. You will only get messages or info o this channel in the videos or community posts. there's also a lot of text messages and replies to posts. I have been banning them left and right the last 2 days. its been fun.
Amazing video Scott, and thank you for listening to the viewers with testing it on the R7. Question, from what you can see so far, do you think the 200-800 exaggerates the focus issue / focus shift with the R7?
I don't think so. It was hard to tell as there was so much snow the AF was hard to use regardless of camera. What is more than likely happening is folks are shooting. SMALL bird @ 1280mm and the bird is just to small for the ranging function of the camera to hit it as that distance. I will be testing that theory. Honestly a lot of issues I see folks having with the R7, I don't experience. I think it's snowing how to use the AF systems on these cameras and not hitting focus ALL the time. I made a video about this if you look back though the videos on the channel. Ill use the 800 f11 to test this, if I can find one to rent.
It's weird some don't experience it but Duade Paton, Jan Wegener have both called it out and even got onto Canon about it. I leave mine on a tripod, use it remotely and without changing anything or any settings 20% of the photos will be OOF. Canon could fix this with a FW update but don't bother...... It's annoying as the R7 was sold to us all as 'same AF as the r6'......
If you haven't go watch the video I made last month about the r7 and autofocus. You just have to know how to use the AF on these cameras and the sensor speed of the r7 affects tha. once y9ou know that it works great@@matthewbell1968
@@WILDALASKA I've watched it twice it's an excellent video Scott but, at times, the R7 really does have a mind of it's own. Maybe there was a bad batch and mine is one of them? I've used it with the 100-500 and the 400mm F4 do ii but it still wanders from time to time for absolutely no reason at all. One thing to note is that the sensor read out speed is very slow, there's a graph on the internet and it's on the level with a Fuji xt3 from 2018. Keep up the great videos, any chance of a Snowy owl photo? Many thanks from England 🇬🇧🇬🇧

And remember the fstop is 2/3 of a stop difference not he 2 lenses at max focal.
Thanks!
Grats John
Can you show test it on canon r8 with those Len to see how it turn out. I have canon R8. Thanks. Looking forward your next video with R8 and rf200-800
Working on it now. This week will be R7 and Rf200-800 vs RF 100-500. Next week R8 and then R5 on its heels
I'm be curious about comparing the performance of this lens on the R6II vs the 100-500 on R7. The latter combination on the long end should be equivalent to 800/11 on full frame, so this should give a 2/3 stop advantage and have a lot more ISO headroom even considering the full frame penalty.
👍
You seemed to get some really good shots. I really liked the high key shot of that wolf (same photo in the thumbnail). I look forward to more videos on this lens.
Thank you. It's actually a red fox believe it or not. It's a marbled variety. Fur traders bred the crop fox variants to get a marbled variant for fur trade. She's a super cool fox to photograph.
@@WILDALASKA That’s awesome. Very pretty
would love to see how it works with the teleconverter
Noted and its on the list already 🎅
great shots!!
Thanks a lot! 🎅
Great video, beautiful photos, useful info :)
thx
Merry Christmas and a happy new year 😁😁😁
Merry Christmas 🎄Thanks for watching.
Nice images despite the flat light! 👍👍
Flat would have been good. No was a better description lol.
I have the R8, which has no IBS, I would like to know how well the lens IS works at 800mm, at slower shutter speeds, on the R8, great videos!
Testing the R8 and just that subject. I have no issues with the R8 on my big white 500 F4 MKII with handheld video and that thing is over 7lbs in weight 🎅 So im expecting it to be ok
I think we have become too nitpicky the video and images you took with this 😮 incredible 💯‼️😇
Thank you 🙌
It was a good review. Realistic conditions
thx
😂 Great video, you sure give your gear a good testing 😢
I’m in Sunny Australia 35 degrees today, so no Snow at all zero.
I am patiently waiting for my lens to pair it with my R7, I am very encouraged by your words on this lens with the R7.
Keep your great vids coming I just love them
Merry Christmas 🎉.
Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully the lens gets to you soon. Mine took a bit.
Merry Christmas 🎅
Great video. I would be curious on how well the lens does on the R8 without the ibis.
Coming this week
I'm on a fixed income and can't afford to have gear fucking up.
oh always put a raincoat on your gear if you are able to. Just wanted you to know that inc are you don't it will survive. 😄@@davepastern
@@WILDALASKA that’s the plan
Looking forward to more of your experiences with the lens. R7 is the body I'm shooting. After you use it for a while I would like to hear your thoughts of this lens compared with the 100-500 on that R7 body. I have the 100-500 and am interested in how they compare.
Will do
@@WILDALASKAThank you
Merry Christmas and thank you for the fox print 😊 Love the video and shots with the new lens. What kind of fox was this one? Reminded me of my little blue merle Sheltie. Christmas blessings to you!
It's a red fox, cross variant. Fur traders bred them to be all kinds of marbled colors. I think this one is actually called a marble fox variant. she is just gorgeous.
@WILDALASKA Yes she is, thank you
Thanks for the giveaway.
Yes I got several messages that this was happening. I made a community post about it. Than ks for letting me know. And grass
Usually don't treat a lens like that until I've had it at least a couple of months!
lol
Compare it to the Z 180-600, Thanks.
@@WILDALASKA Yes I know how that goes and I'm sure both lenses are equally sharp but that Canon lens adds another 200mm which is great;)
very much so
Looking forward to the further videos on the 100-500 with the TC.

It's a Simms Challenger Fishing Jacket amzn.to/3NCtBy8 It works great for winter or summer. I like it as it's tough and won't rip on the rocks and such. I just wear heavy layers under it in the winter
Stop treating the lens like a random tool bought from your local DIY shop 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤
I know. I was watching the footage as I set it down roughly it on the back of the truck HAHA
@@WILDALASKA you mean, you tossed it on the back of the truck ahaha

Yeh don’t come around asking to borrow my Drill 😆
Pah 😂😅
Like to see how it performers on the r6m2
I may do the r6mkII later. But I will be dointhe R8 very soon (as I own it). It's basically same camera minus IBIS, so hopefully that will get close to what you are wanting to know. But I will get to the R6MKII in a few weeks. Lots to test.🎄
f9 ? why to buy?
Congrats to all winners!!
Interested in the autofocus on birds in flight on the 200-800
That will be challenging to capture the EVF as on Canon I can't see through the EVF or LCD on the camera only the Atomos monitor, but we will get it for you. I don't reprint an issue, but we'll see. Thanks for watching
Pretty cool shots for right out of the box. Pretty envious, preordered first day but no lens yet! Happy Christmas to Scott, looking forward to watching your channel in 2024.
Yes they lens availability is bit annoying on this release. Merry Christmas 🎄
You should have titled the video "Unboxing in a Blizzard".
No kidding
すごい!雪の中で開封の儀!(笑)
❄️
My god how y treated the lens at the beginning 😢😂😢😂😢😂
lol its weather sealed for the most part 😂
Protip: If you put the lens on in your car, you could easily avoid getting snow into the camera.
thats no fun
You have been hacked, I just received a email saying I had won a RF 200 lens, they then asked for how I would like it shipped and what my charges would be. Watch out my friend. The address came from WILD ALASKA, same as yours.
My email address is not Wild Alaska. They spoof the email addresses. You will only get messages or info o this channel in the videos or community posts.
there's also a lot of text messages and replies to posts. I have been banning them left and right the last 2 days. its been fun.
Swapping lenses in the middle of a snow storm. That’s how you separate men from boys.
😂💪 Just gotta be quick , shield it, point it down, and pray 🙏
Ef 100-400mm mk2 review with the r7 please 🙏
Soon. probably late January or Early February
@@WILDALASKAreally 😍 thankyou so much
Amazing video Scott, and thank you for listening to the viewers with testing it on the R7.
@@WILDALASKA Thank you 🙏
It's weird some don't experience it but Duade Paton, Jan Wegener have both called it out and even got onto Canon about it.
