    here's a tip:
iguaçu = ee goo ah soo
also, "foz", as in foz do iguaçu, means like, the place where a certain river ends. so the city is named this because its located near the end of the iguaçu river

We do drink a lot of Mate in Rio de Janeiro, but it’s different, our version is toasted and in iced tea format. In the beaches you can drink mixed with lemonade, and it is amazingly refreshing in a hot sunny day.

Someone might have told you, but we do drink mate in Rio. However, as an infusion with the toasted herb and you can find it EVERYWHERE: the most popular brand is Matte Leão and is a traditional beach drink.

Mate has a very deep-rooted history in Rio Grande do Sul. There was a time that a lot of internal territorial conflicts were happening (not going to dig into that here). There was also a lot of family feuds (a lot of really good brazilian telenovelas about that. Try "A casa das Sete Mulheres" (The House of the Seven Women). So a habit began for the leader of a family to prepare fresh mate and share it with visitors, always being the first to drink (the first pour is the most bitter). Everyone gathes in a circle and shares the same cuia (cup), to show that the drink hasn't been poisoned in any way. With time, it became a symbol of trust. To have someone pour mate for you and to share it with them is both parties saying "we're equal". :) Mate can be prepared in a number of ways to have different flavors and many people make an effort to decor the drink with flowers, jewels and other decor that is usually meaningful in some way to the people drinking it.

Mate 🧉 is the herb, and it can be drank with cold or hot water. When you’re using cold water, it’s called Tererê (or tereré, there’s a difference in the pronunciation but it’s the same thing), and with hot water it’s called Chimarrão. The cold one is more common in the western-center of Brazil, Like the state of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, because they have a mostly hot weather; on the summer, it’s about 30° to 36° Celsius the average temperature, but there are places that hit 40° easily. The hot one is mostly common in the southern part of Brazil, A little bit in Paraná, and the majority is on Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, there are places in Rio Grande do Sul that get bellow 0° C. Today the Mate herb is becoming more popular in the whole country, here where i live, North of Paraná, it’s common to see people that like Mate everywhere, the majority likes Tererê better than Chimarrão, because it’s hot more often than cold here.

Aqui no Mato Grosso nóis toma teréré.
    A diferença é que chimarrão é quente

you have seen so much but when it comes to Brazil, it always seems like there is a lot you haven't seen yet, I mean, maybe in a different opportunity you could go to the extreme south in the winter, to Pantanal, to the Lençóis Maranhenses, to Bahia, to Pernambuco, to the famous Amazonian Rainforest, to Fernando de Noronha, to the Distrito Federal, and even to São Paulo. In case you want to come back, those are only a few things you could visit.

Mate is very traditional in Brazil, but in each state the form of drinking is totally different.
Here in São Paulo we drink as a tea in mugs, in Rio Grande do Sul state the people drink mate very hot in the same stuf that they drink in Paraná (Foz do Iguaçu), but in Paraná they usually drink cold.
For this reason you thought that Rio De Janeiro people don't drink mate. In Rio the people drink in a different form, they drink in bottle or in glasses.
In this video you can see a traditional Rio de Janeiro mate salesman:

In this one you can see a advertisement for mate in Bottle

Hey, Thanks for passing by here in Foz do Iguaçu! Great Video, btw. About Mate, it's quite a mess around here. The HOT mate (the one you showed on the video) is a traditional drink from the south of the country due to historical colonization. On Paraguay there is the COLD Mate, quite different and caotic. Some people drink this cold one with flavor, others just with water, other with tea... Anyway, did you had the chance to the side-tours on Cataratas (the one with the boat called 'macuco safari' for instance)?

You are watching an English language channel. I'm adding subs to videos when possible. What more do you expect? 😂
