Hey guys! Speaking of batteries, have you guys experimented with heating earth or stone as a thermal mass that more slowly releases heat from the wood stove over time? Great series!!!
I would guess not very feasible, As a general rule, gases are less dense than liquids so not efficient to transfer heat from gas -> liquid than liquid -> gas. But it can still be done. The other problem with your suggestion is that chimney exhaust needs to follow a direct route to outside so you can't really snake it for long distances in order to set up a heat exchanger. Also, the fact that you're using smoke would mean that all those pipes would need to be cleaned regularly to prevent build-up. What would work best for your suggestion are some solar water heaters on the roof maybe?
Well wood that is energy dense and seasoned (you need to season it so it smoke way less) cost good money/labour/storage but on other side it's good to have also this consideration. Coal is also interesting source of heat but wrongly burn can turn street into great war trenches XD
To make a hole in any wall, drill the center through as the first step. Why didn't you guys move the horizontal bit further out to keep the stove where you wanted it? Or shorted it?
What type of insulation is that? If you just pave sheetong over that there wil be a lot of mold real quick. In this type of insulation system. You need a vaper barrier. Like "intello"
Great video. The horizontal extension is trouble. It will need to be disassembled each year to clean and inspect. The vertical has a clean out but the build up in the horizontal will be a hazard If i may also offer, Durarock board behind or in place of the metal on the wall. A double layer will be fire proof and provides a heat battery to help the free wood fire when burned down, to release more heat through the night and into the cold mornings. Thanks for the great video and an idea for a video i need to do on the homestead furnace. Heat 3000 sqft with 4 logs all night. Tune in to check it out in a couple days 🤠
Hah! Now that’s a warm winter!! Our winters here in GA are pretty mild too. We are planning on making a video about cheaper alternatives to AC soon! That one should be more relevant for individuals in climates like yours!
Can y'all do that Abe Lincoln thing with your kids when it's all done, where you hold them upside down and have them make footprints walking along the ceiling?
Yes, it's just involved. We've used a few small scale stirling generators just for educational purposes. Checkout this system here: www.oekofen.com/en-gb/myenergy365/
Silly to not go through the roof. The more chimney pipe you have indoors, the less heat you're blowing out. Think pf every foot of stove pipe like it was a 1000w heater. That's a lot of wasted heat. Plus just cleaner and looks less crappy.
We hope that others learn from our experience :) We'll test a few approaches, and perhaps end up going through the roof in the end. This particular cabin has been an experiment we're sharing in real time. We're here to recommend the roof approach now. We want to be honest about what works and what doesn't.
"46% of your energy bill is for heating!" Me, an Australian on the north east cost: "Whoaaa, that's crazy!" Actually now makes me think, good ideas for staying "cool" sustainably would be good, especially because running fans takes lots of electricity & AC has harmful emissions.
Logs can be free -- you just need access to land or to have land. Oil is never free. Where do you live? We get logs from our property, but if you don’t own any land, ask around! People are often willing to trade wood in return for helping them cut up some of their brush/trees in over grown areas.
Can vouch for this, I burn wood and we get all of it for free from people who desperately want to get rid of it. You'll just have to cut and split it yourself, probably.
Great video guys! :-) A carbonmonoxide sensore ALLWAYS worth the investment! Tbis is a thing you cant say enough! You dont smell carbonmonoxide, but minutes its gives you, can means life or death.
Cue heat pumps. Not as easy, but definitely much more effective, less polluting, and less deadly. Not to mention that burning solids like coal and wood is illegal in some places, because of the smoke produced.
@@Yelonek1986 Indeed. For such a small cabin using an air conditioner (heat pump) is 100% the best solution but they should put a bit more care in insulating and making the cabin airtight. They have no damp barrier and make a hole in the wall without any kind of wind or water proofing
@@Obbliteration Stove is okay in my book if you are too poor to get anything better. But actually poor, not "I spent all my money to get a nicer car and cannot afford anything else". Emergency when your main heat source breaks down is fine too. Since they are already getting AC, then maybe focus on getting electricity in the winter? Windmill? Watermill? If it was possible to run the methane harvester in the winter, that would be great. Another thing is the cogeneration of heat and electricity. Run some kind of power generator (LPG? I think you can get those in small tanks) and capture waste heat.
@@Yelonek1986 ahh I forgot they want to be off grid.. In that case you probably have to burn wood or pellets. No generator will be able to power ac in winter.
Careful with that chimney, guys! The long horizontal component could mean it needs more regular cleaning to not get backed up.
Yes, it will. This was the first test for the draft. We’re going to work to shorten the horizontal and make a follow up video!

It’s on the roadmap!! Rocket mass heaters for the win :) And a WOFATI home. Both ideas Paul Wheaton champions
Thermal batteries are mass. Heat the mass, and the heat lasts all night!
Yeah! Make that weird space between the wall and the stove look great with some thermal mass! Aka stones

How feasible is it to use some of the residual heat that's in the smoke? For example to heat water for tea or showering?

Unfortunately, wood batteries take years and adequate land to make.
There's so much unused dead wood here in the USA. It's not going to work for everyone, but it's an option for many.
@@acornlandlabs Yep, hope to use it myself someday.

Earth! We get them from our property, but many people who don’t have their own land can get free wood if they clear people’s brush who need it done.

We do, we don’t heat or cool this cabin hardly ever. Future builds will have it. It’s wool
What about a spark arrestor? The cabin looks relatively close to your the trees in the background.
Can’t really do this in my apartment, but I do look forward to having a wood stove in my future home.

Wow, danke ❤
You should have added the theme of Log, from Ren & Stimpy.
I love the idea. But if everyone in our town used wood stoves, we couldn't see our neighbors across the street.
It’s true. Most folks won’t do this however.
