SO excited about this project and overjoyed to sponsor it. You guys are doing incredible work bringing more accessibility to the off-grid lifestyle, showing just how easy it is and making it EPIC along the way. Can't wait for episode 2 - Kevin
Holy mowly, this is incredible! A beautifully filmed serie, made by young people, showing how to achieve complete independence, easily, quickly, cheaply, showing how fun of a process it can be! I can't wait for the rest of the serie!
Definitely wanna see this progress. I wanted to do what you guys are doing and didn’t have the know how. Plus life happens. You guys have to have many more projects like this after the 30 days. Sell the land and all the stuff and start again. Do it all over. Every project you do is a seed of your passions. Grow them. Profit and repeat. Soon enough when you drive around there will be plenty of places that you wanna hangout at. Make every project bigger with a bigger homestead. Sell each one for more. I wanna watch the next 10 years of what you guys do. Your channel will blow up. When you guys hit 50million subs. Make a franchise and sell it across the country. You guys can make real change. I believe in you guys!
Go boys! Go! :-) Please, later when you are at the right time during the process, incloude the numbers. This system howmany person able to provide for. And how to expand if have bigger family.
You’d have to go rural to buy land to do this legally. In a metro area this can be done as an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) to a regular home. Land costs vary greatly, but you can find a few rural acres for less then $50k. That would be about $8k down and $500 monthly
As a South African who is currently experiencing constant and regular power and water shedding. I am very much enjoying your approach and views on sustainability and self reliance. I look forward to watching your journey grow and evolve. It is something I truly aim to implement in my life, based on what I feel is a necessity approaching with hasted intention. Your work is much valued by myself and I thank you for the information you're simply handing out.
This looks like a great project! It may be worth checking out the Verge Permaculture rainwater harvesting course, or at least their book. A properly designed system does not need covers or shade for the tanks and will not grow algae. Keep up the good work!
Small, offgrid homes on their own land are mostly illegal in most cities and suburbs. You would need to build it as an ADU in a metro area. You have to move farther out to do this legally. We hope to help change laws to encourage offgrid, tiny home in-fill!
Excellent video. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series! Quick question on the methane digester: would it be possible to set it up with a pump or compressor to fill a steel tank, similar to a propane tank? That way you wouldn't have to worry about venting excess methane, but could instead build up a supply of it over time?
The production quality is amazing, and the contents as well, the only thing caused me to raise an eyebrow is "cook an apple in solar oven"? Why not egg or rice - something that would provide filling lunch to 3 young guys who had done physical work outdoors...
Of course you can do all this when you have money to spend! I've been off grid in Hawaii for three years on basically zero dollars! Now that's a challenge. Try it with no money!
That does sound like a challenge! We’re on a tight budget. Without money we’d need lots of free help, donations of items and free materials. How do you make it work with no money?
I really love the idea and the whole project and excuse me for the criticism but you do realise that the homebiogas system you are using needs a certain outdoor temperature range to function, right? So as long as the temperature doesn’t drop below 68F it is all fine and dandy but in colder conditions it doesn’t work. There is a booster kit for slightly colder weather but it doesn’t work together with the toilet since both the toilet and the booster kit use the same inlet on the homebiogas … and you are not supposed to place it indoors for heating since it could leak gas of course and even putting it in a greenhouse is not recommended. Like I said I love the project and maybe in a later video you will explain all of this but I just wanted to make sure people don’t just up and buy one of these in the wrong conditions. Thanks for the content! 😊
We’ll discuss that more in episodes coming up. Land ranges from $8-$12k per acre in our area. Costs vary wildly across the US. You can buy rural land for 15-20% down
@@OffGridGuides One last thing, I'd love to hear what you guys can put together pertaining to agricultural zoning also. Thanks for your detailed intel and please know it's not going to waste; I've emailed the Whitehouse with an incredibly small portion of a plan to "Make The Plains Great Again" which would make America a larger producer of better quality commodities and I'm assuming someone somewhere is still watching. Hopefully I piece enough things together about the Earth being an element factory via "radiants" (depending on how you view the electromagnetic spectrum) precipitating to center Earth through transient luminous events, to help them to realize how essential aiding ecosystems without taking so much from them is.
How much land is this entire project? How many people will live there? Live there permanently or seasonal? All things viewers should know so they can plan their projects/infrastructure accordingly.
All good questions :) We'll hit on these items more as the series rolls out. This build is being completed on 2 acres currently, and will be moved to a more remote 7 acre location upon completion. It's all portable. The micro cabin is great for two adults. Canvas tent is also good for 2 adults. This cabin work as a permanent setup, the tent is more seasonal. Stay tuned for more details as the episodes roll out.
Every county is different. Consider making this setup an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) for a bigger home. GA counties don't often allow these as a primary home. You'll need to go to TN or Alabama to a county with no minimum sq footage for a home for it to be fully legal. You can always try to go covert too... But it has risks :)
Do you have any plans to grow algae and be able to process it into biofuel for your vehicles? I am most interested in a home set up that would make that possible!
Maybe oneday! For now we’re covering the basics. Checkout the Green Power House project, you’ll like that. We focus more on advocating for walkable path communities and pushing away from cars being the only mode of transport here in the US. Bikes, scooters and golf carts would make a big difference
Land costs vary wildly by location . You could find a few acres for $5-$10k or a few dozen for $500k+. We spent $20k on the 1/4 acre land lab, and then $7k per acre for the rural land lab
Wow! That's amazing. It certainly isn't THAT affordable nor doable in the UK. The nickname 'Rip Off Britain' rings true in this instance. For a bell tent like yours here would be averaged at £400, a 14 by 8 foot insulated cabin would set you back around £6 plus another £1,200 if you want it pressure treated (I would have thought an outdoor building would be made of pressure treated wood anyway), you certainly wouldn't get those kinds of second hand cabins here unless you go for an office Portacabin 28' x 9' with toilet and Shower Portakabin which is not adequately insulated but you could do something with it over time for under £2,000 and that all sounds reasonable until you look at the cost of land, planning restrictions and local opposition. That sized portacabin here would need planning permission. And planning can take an age...anywhere in the world I guess. But your video has me thinking it is still possible even here. Thank you.
I don’t think there’s anyway to make simple living arrangements legal in the uk with the new regulatory standards for buildings. Not whilst being sustainable. I love watching and learning about these systems, it’s all fairly straightforward stuff, but the issues always come back to planning and legality, and the cost just goes up from there. And if you diy a system, you effectively ruin your chances of selling the property if you wanna maybe do something else down the line. The uk is feeling very restricted in what you can do more than think about. Particularly after loosing freedom of movement…
Land prices vary wildly. We're aiming for the off-grid build systems to be under $25k (land will be more depending on your location, not included in the $25k number). Around us land varies from about $9k-$15k per acre.
@@OffGridGuides good thing you guys started in the fall then! Would you guys cool the cabin with solar powered AC or what? I'm looking at passive systems but idk how that'd go in the south
@@nickbanderson Cooling (even in the south) can be handled in many different ways. We'll be placing the cabin under a shaded tree line, using a small 500W AC unit, and insulating it well. Building your home under big trees can lower temps by around 6*F, a small solar panel setup can power a 500W AC unit, fans powered by solar take very little power, and a well insulated cabin (or a home with earth berms) uses a fraction of the cooling a poorly built modern structure requires.
