To save spotted owls, US plans to kill hundreds of thousands of West Coast barred owls

  • To save the imperiled spotted owl from potential extinction, U.S. wildlife officials are embracing a contentious plan to deploy trained shooters into dense West Coast forests to kill almost a half-million barred owls that are crowding out their cousins.
    The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service strategy released Wednesday is meant to prop up declining spotted owl populations in Oregon, Washington state and California. The Associated Press obtained details in advance.
    Documents released by the agency show up to about 450,000 barred owls would be shot over three decades after the birds from the eastern U.S. encroached into the West Coast territory of two owls: northern spotted owls and California spotted owls. The smaller spotted owls have been unable to compete with the invaders, which have large broods and need less room to survive than spotted owls.

    If an animal is in decline due to human behavior, that impacting behavior should be addressed. If the decline is due to natural competition, not introduced by humans, we should let nature take its course.

    What a wicked, horrible plan, and the wrong conclusion. None of the owls-whether spotted or barred-are the reason why the spotted are less populated. Besides, no one should be killing owls due to an abundance of one kind over another.

      The Spotted Owl movement where a invasive species the Domesticus Californae migrated up here and managed to dismantle the logging industries of the Pacific Northwest. Sadly the parasite decided to burrow in deep and build apartments and condos because not enough room for its kind.

      Getting rid of the wolves was a great thing until liberals reintroduced them. I lost one of my favorite hunting spots because the wolves decimated the deer population. The ranchers in the area are pi$$ed as well

    I completely disagree. I do not approve or enable this kind of sick behavior. Just rescue and seperate all 470,000 Barred Owls from spotted owls with no fatalities/deaths. United States you're tweaking. There shouldn't be killing off one species to save another. Everyone please spread awareness. All animals are endangered and all animals lives matter. As a man living here in the US I have to agree with you it seems like our people with power are worshiping Satan full-time or something because the pure evil that's coming out of this country's government is superhuman and not in a good way. Just know that the rest of us Americans are normal everyday people we're just stuck in the middle of this nonsense. I mean really it's not easy for us to just pick up and move to another continent and become immigrants ourselves, but that may be in the future seeing that our laws and our government are completely unbearable and getting worse... In the meantime I feel that it is a terrible idea to eradicate any of these birds. I feel like we may end up with both species either gone or on the verge of it.

    I'm appalled by this so-called "solution." To save one species you commit a genocide on another? That's insane. I'm sure there are other solutions amenable to both owl species even if one is just letting nature take its course.

  • @SIN3JASON
    @SIN3JASON 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Instead of spending millions and millions of dollars to pay so-called professionals to go out in the woods and kill these animals and to spend all that money to do all of the other ways you plan on eliminating this animal why don't you spend that money to make a protected game reserve for these animals. We brought eagles back from the brink of Extinction by doing this and I didn't see us having to take the lives of 400 million Americans just to save the lives of this eagle. This just seems like a problem that's about ready to make both species extinct because man doesn't have the sense to keep things alive... By the way...I love how the video fades out at the end talking about hunters luring them in and then you fade it out right when it said blast them with shotguns. If that's your answer for everything then you should probably just let nature handle these owls and not interfere before you end up making both species extinct.

    Habitat loss is another key factor in saving the Spotted Owl, yet they will do nothing for that. What hypocrisy.
