    I've always thought that EMG's solderless quick connect system should've been adopted industry wide because changing pickups and installing pickups with this system is so easy. Unfortunately I heard that the problem is that EMG won't let other companies use this system :(

    • @barbmelle3136
      @barbmelle3136 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From Leo: That is interesting, especially since they did not develop those connectors. The Bergstik system has been used in the electronics industry since at least 1970. The GFS has the advantage uses shielded wire that is way more important with passive singlecoils.

      There can still be another kind that can be made but the real reason it doesn't exist is because of how many "tone purists" there are in the guitar community. Everyone would be complaining that the tone wouldn't be as good for some reason or something.

      How do you wire the regular pickup to the kwikplug. I would love to know what wires go where both for full humbucker and coil splitting

    • @minkorrh
      @minkorrh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seankelly6139 Literally look at the amount of actual wires coming from your pickup (unscrew it and pull it out) cut the wire(s) underneath the pickup and solder a male to one end and a female to the other, remembering to solder the wires to the correct side of the connector so each sides are wired properly. Take both hands and make a peace sign, now touch the peace sign fingertips together. Imagine a male connector on one side and a female connector on the other. This is literally what you are doing with the pickup wire. If you buy a new set of pickups, solder the _opposite_ connector to what is attached to the guitars electronics and just 'plug it in'

    • @seankelly6139
      @seankelly6139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minkorrh thanks. I didn't know anything about the kwikplug system when I asked the questions. I have ordered parts for doing this but have yet to try to put one together. I know you can wire the pickups for split coil but the diagrams for it only show it as coil tap. I would like to wire a Jimmy Page harness in my firefly but but there aren't the right amount or colors to do this. Do you know how that would be possible wiring the pickups to the little microchip boards will actually work with the Jimmy Page Wiring? I have the knowledge for wiring new harnesses but I can't see that being done. Thanks for your reply on my questions

    • @minkorrh
      @minkorrh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seankelly6139 Ok, used the words 'split coil' and 'coil tap'.....those are the same thing. What they mean is you are 'tapping' into the coil at its mid-point of the winding, or 'splitting' the coil so to speak. When coils are wound they make a small loop after winding a bunch of turns on the bobbin. That little loop is twisted together, and the winding if the coil continues until it meets requirements. That little loop that was made in the middle is the point you connect to to use half the coil.
      Now to determine which of the 3 wire coming from the coil is the 'centertap' you will need an ohmmeter to measure the resistance of the 3 wires in relation to each other.
      I'm not exactly familiar with what you're working on and the pots and their connections. I'm just giving you some more general info that might help you get there.
      I didn't even know there was a product called the Kwikplug.
      Honestly if I had the time I'd research it for you and tell you how to wire it up but I do have a million things going on atm.

    • @seankelly6139
      @seankelly6139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minkorrh coil tap is not the same as coil splitting. Coil tap is done with a single coil pickup starting a wire for coil tapping part way thru of wiring the bobbin. Coil splitting changes to south pickup on humbucker. 2 single coils put together is a humbucker. Coil split a humbucker goes to the use of one North or south sides of the pickup. You can't coil split a single coil pickup due to the fact that it only has one coil. Therefore coil tap is for a single coil pickup and coil splitting is for a humbucker. Look it up. Every description of coil tap is not the same as coil splitting. Coil tap needs 3 wires. Coil splitting need 5. So not the same. I've been fixing guitars for years now plus I have friends in huge bands that have expressed to me that those are not the same. Look up Jimmy Page Wiring harness. How you gonna manage to do that with 3 wires per pickup. You can't.

    I've got four GFS VEH Kwik Plug PUs installed in two guitars. Guitarfetish says they are modeled after the Van Halen "brown sound" pickup. They are close to that sound. They have really nice distinction and clarity and are very responsive to pick attack. They aren't as high output as a modern shred pickup but are perfect for 80s metal and classic rock sounds. Top quality pickup that holds it's own against my DiMarzios. Thanks for the demo, it's easy once you get the wiring in.

    I built about 5 guitars maybe more to break up the boredom due to covid. Some of the bodies and necks I got from GFS but I got some stuff from Warmoth and got some Mighty Mite necks but the first build I got everything from GFS. I love their pickups at GFS. They’re made in Boston MA and basically GFS sells a pair for the cost of one Dimarzio or Seymour Duncan and they offer wiring kits for most common Strat Tele or dual humbucker or single humbucker configurations that eliminates soldering and I love em. I haven’t swapped any but if you like swapping pickups you’ll love these. The pots seem like decent quality as well. They have PAF pickups, ceramic pickups, alnico 2 and 5. And they do sound great. I’ve ordered one super distortion for my American Strat before I found these and haven’t bought anything else since. Great pickups and seems like great wiring and electronics. Their bodies and necks can be more hit and miss. I hear many complaints about the bodies not being cut well and I got one that could’ve been routed better but all in all the electronics are great.

Now you will have to take into account that each emg (and every pickup pretty much except fishmans) is just a little tiny bit different. 2 emg 81s can sound slightly different because if their wiring. However , they should sound more or less the same. Now i am saying this because the way they were made 15 years ago might have changed. So it wouldnt be bold to assume that some difference can be found. TLDR: I am a clown and i have no idea

      @@DocDeBlangis hahaha loved the TL DR. Anyways, yeah I was thinking the same thing. I am still undecided on wether to renew them or not. But if I decide to, I will definitely go for the splitables

    Man I've gotta be careful when I watch your reviews...! If I'm not? Then I end up buying.! Lol I've learned to be cautious ⚠️ when I'm here watching... Great review as always Max... I can't tell you how many times I've thought about purchasing these kwik plug pickups from Guitar Fetish over the years

  • @Cypherdude1

    Max, do you think you could make a video which converts the Firefly LP to the GFS Kwikplug system? Since all GFS Kwikplug pickups come with the connector already included, it would be easy to choose any GFS pickup. I think your viewers would be interested in such a video because the Firefly LP's come with microphonic pickups. I searched and there is no such video or website. Soldering is required. Microphonic pickups are notorious for having feedback.

    The idea with soldering is it minimizes connections which cuts down on garbage noise. Extra connectors cause background noise.

    I would get rings for each pickup. Be alot faster. Those springs are funny to put in.

    That's like Nascar Guitar tire/pick-up change and you are the pit crew. I know what you mean about burning your fingers, i almost got to the point where it was too much heat to really make some physical damage and I had to make sure next time I was really careful doing the soldering. lol

    Oh, Xaviere guitars are really nice and affordable. Philip Mcknight has a good video on them too, he's all compliments.
    They are great for their price point. Buy one.

    One man Pirelli Pit Crew pickup swap. Now if electric guitar makers would adopt a standard way to pop in pickups from the back of the guitar without having to take off the strings, we could get that down to the 10 second benchmark. That was fun. Thanks
