I find it helps if you experiment with different garden hoses, I find ones with a lighter nozzle made from carbon fibre does the trick for me, gold plating sometimes helps also
People who are really great at doing certain things are not always good at explaining to others how they do them. They may not really know themselves. Ted Williams said he became a great baseball slugger simply by keeping his eye on the ball. But scientists studying major league pitchers say that their fast ball is moving way too fast for the human eye to be able to see it, much less follow it. A lot of seemingly superhuman abilities take place in the subconscious mind after many, many hours of practice. Anyway, thanks Doc. Love your music.
I totally agree with this. I do think this is a decent nugget of an explanation though. Doc is a thorough student of the instrument and there is very little he doesn't know about what he's doing. He still practices 5-6 hours a day and is always looking for things to help give him an edge, whether it's a different approach or new equipment. When we asked him about embouchure, for example, he said it's something he knows everything about and nothing about. I honestly think the thing to gain from Doc is that you need to dedicate each and every day to the trumpet in order to achieve real progress. If you do this, you'll eventually figure some things out.

His description of the hose is a good one, BUT the distance of the water stream is also dependent on maintaning the supply of the water too. Just squeezing ones lips harder by itself doesnt make those higher notes happen unless there is some good compressed air behind it.
I don't play an instrument but I saw Doc Severinsen om my video feed. You look like a great TH-cam. My nephew plays the trumpet, I'll suggest he check it out.

As a trumpet player i get the concept. he is trying to say you have to tighten up your amberture or the lip muscles when you put your lips up to the trumpet.. you have to make a really small space for air to pass between your lips in order to make a sound on the trumpet.

The thing about trumpet (and other) pedagogy is that analogies only work for some people, and may not help some at all. It may be all true, but some people need to hear these things in direct terms to which they can relate and respond.

Doc Severinsen hasn't gone senile, despite the fact that he is 91 years old. Amazing that he is still alive, and still playing trumpet. His speaking is somewhat impaired due the fact that he had a couple of mild strokes. This fact makes his abilities seem even more fantastic at age 91. Doc is in better shape than most 60 year-olds. If you make it to age 60, you will realize what I'm talking about. We should all be so lucky to get to age 91 and still be upright, walking and talking. Most 90-year olds are lying in a bed barely alive, waiting to die. Doc Severinsen is still playing concerts, and sounding great and thrilling audiences. Amazing !!
