I've tried all the solutions. Traps seem to just catch the adults going out for a stroll after they're done laying tons of eggs.
Neem oil and insect soap seemed to slow them down a bit, but regular application still didn't eliminate them.
Mosquito bits seem to have the longest term impact but I found that the gnats will still come back if I let the soil dry all the way out then water it again.
I think the only solution left is to burn the house down and start from scratch.

worst part is if you listen to her you will spend over 100 dollars to get rid of gnats and still have the problem when you are done. this lady is like so many others here on yoptube just a salesman who will tell you anything to sell a product. every video you watch on youtube now has something to sell and use very deceptive practices to get you to buy their crap. i tried every method she has said and they dont work. at best they keep them down to a minimum that is all. you will have to keep buying the products over and over again. even the mosquito bits she does not tell you how to use it but i have tried up to 4 tablespoons to one gallon of water and it still does not work. if the person is selling something run like hell and dont listen to them their job is to convince you to buy it.

When I moved into my first "real" apartment I decided I wanted to beautify it with plants, so I bought 8 houseplants from Trader Joe's. It was Spring time. A few days later I saw a few little flies, so I squashed them, but after a few weeks my whole apartment was infested. I was so embarrassed. After trying a few things and doing research, what worked best for me was: first, make sure the soil is dry; treat the soil weekly (or as scheduled) during your normal watering for a month with hydrogen peroxide (I used 1 gallon of water and 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide for all the plants to not damage them); set up shot glasses beside the plants with apple cider vinegar and 4-5 drops of soap on the surface; place yellow sticky tape above or near the infected plants, remove weekly or when filled with gnats; spray the leaves with a mixture of 1-cup water, 2 table spoons white vinegar, and a tea spoon of soap. Spraying the leaves prevents other bugs, as well, from eating the leaves. After a month they will be gone, you can till the top soil and return to watering and caring for your plants as usual.

Here's what has finally worked for me after weeks of battling an infestation: I removed the top two inches of soil form each affected plant, let them really dry out (for me it took like 3 weeks because these are big plants in big pots!). Meanwhile, I set yellow sticky traps, sprayed the soil with neem oil (not sure how effective this was, but it was worth a shot). By far the most effective was the window fly traps, clear sticky traps that adhere to your windows easily. They've caught nearly a hundred between the two traps, maybe more! Once the plants were well and truly dried, I watered using a mosquito bit solution and for the last few days I've seen very few flies and the problem is markedly decreased. Best of luck to everyone, you will prevail!

I don't mind letting the smaller spiders chill on my plants, because they are helpful! But here in the UK we get MASSIVE house spiders. I saw one yesterday morning whilst I was getting ready for work which was about 4 inches across and I those ones really stress me out. They are quite chunky as well. I don't know why I'm so scared of them, but sadly my bedroom seems to be their favourite place in the house! I found 7 just in one month once. Constantly worried about when I'll find the next one. God forbid I ever find one in my bed, I'll never sleep again!

I’ve been using the neem oil method you were talking about, saturating the top layer of soil, especially right after a thorough watering. I feel like it acts almost like a sealant that kills whatever gnats are already in the root system and prevents more gnats from traveling down INTO the soil when it’s moist after a watering.

Thank you! Will be trying these ASAP. Also, the reason you need to wear eye and respiratory protective gear when working with diatomaceous earth is, as you mentioned with the bugs, that it is a silica (glass) dust and it can scratch your eye or get into your lungs (which is pretty harmful). Fun fact, diatomaceous earth is the remains of little ocean dwelling critters.

Remember my soil was dried out, I had mixed in Neem pellets and placed the Yellow Sticky 'traps throughout the pot and steeped the Mosquito Bits in water and watered with the MB water. WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! Your advise worked and I really didn't think anything could help. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve tried a lot of things to control gnats. I’ve noticed you were “spraying” a tiny amount of diatomaceous earth dust on the leaves of the plant, but I have personally put one inch of it directly on potting soil to cover it ALL, with a spoon, and it DID work! It may not be aesthetic, because now I feel like I have white soil everywhere, but it worked sooo well and I will probably just put tiny rocks or sand on top of it to make it look more cute.

I had a lot so I did a combo attack of the apple cider vinegar/soap/water mixture, one with some balsamic and apple cider vinegar, one with just apple cider vinegar, some fruit fly traps that look like little apples and had a vinegar smelling liquid in them, and then these sheets of sticky paper (fly paper?) since I couldn't find the ones that stick in the soil.
The sticky paper worked the best. I just laid flat on the soil and trapped almost all of them in the first 24 hours. The vinegar traps caught some, with the straight apple cider one doing the best. The little fruit fly traps were worthless (presumably since they're for fruit flies, but I thought it was worth a shot). Good luck to you all in your endeavors.

Best way to get rid of gnats in house plants:
    1. Repot with new soil (even in existing pot). Throw the soil in a garbage bag and seal tightly, to dispose of eggs, larva and junior gnats in the soil.
    2. Spray roots with Garden Safe Insecticidal Soap. Make sure to spray in the remaining soil on the roots.
    3. Refill pot with new soil, making about 1.5 inches for room on the top of soil for sand.
    4. Add a thick layer of 1.5” - 2” of sand. Pat down to keep it tightly packed.
    5. Water the plant. If sand moves to expose soil, add more sand at the top.
I tried everything and couldn’t get rid of gnats in my plants, until I tried this method with sand. This worked, no more gnats going on 2 months. Gnats can’t dig into tightly packed sand, nor can larvae or gnats crawl up through the sand if packed tightly.

Hey, I bought the mosquito bites for fungus gnats, I was just wondering if you think it’s dangerous, the labelling is a lil scary, thanks for the tips!

Nope! I am perfectly comfortable using it. It is composed of BTI which is a naturally occurring soil bacterium.

I have my first indoor plant ever, a split leaf philadandrum. Noticed a couple of gnats and came to yt to find solution. Good informative video.

Omg I wish I saw this two weeks ago. I literally was crying from the gnat infestation I was having in my plants. It was so disgusting it looked like the soil was moving because there was soooooo many of them! Ughhhhh

Noooo. 😣. I made a trap for them. In a tiny cup, small enough to fit inside your pot I filled it halfways with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, a few squirts of sish soap and a dash of vanilla. It killed so many and I put a trap in each pot yhga was giving me trouble as well as a couple on my counter. The traps contained at least 30 each every week until I was down to a few. Now I keep refilling the traps and leave it in the pot. But be careful not to let the mixture touch the leaves or it will probably kill the leaves.

PS you can use anything. You can cut the bottom of a plastic water bottle or use Tupperware containers. I made a little dip in the soil to set the cup in.

Major problem when moving plants indoors too after letting them get some sun. Good video.

I’ve learned that leaving your cup of coffee out beside your plants attracts them and kills them. I’ve had at least 11-12 of them in there at one time 😅

Ugh I used mosquito bits and they caused so much mold and mushrooms to grow in my soil! I suggest putting the bits in the water and to NOT sprinkle on the soil! Love your videos Harli!

Llama Cat I just started using them recently and they’ve been causing tons of mold growth on top of the soil... I’ve scooped a few off but any on the top of the soil are still molding and I worry about any under the soil. Switching to bit water sounds like the way to go.

I make a tea with mosquito bits, using water that has sat out for at least a day. I watered my plants with it and after about three waterings, they were gone.
