As a 1 year old kid (I was born the previous year of 1996) when I first saw the trailer for THBONT on this VHS, I mistook Notre Dame for the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, thought Frollo was a cordial sympathetic priest (oh how wrong I was) and even thought Esmeralda was from Argentina (because of the sun symbol behind her when she dances).
As at that time I never saw the film until later on DVD I think when I was an older kid.

Would have through Disney would released "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in October and "The Goofy Movie" during the summer of 96. And yes, it was 18 months between its US release and UK release.
