You have no idea how exciting it was as a kid to tune into a mariners game with Dave Niehaus making the calls. He was the kind of guy that made you want to put your ear close to the radio cause you were just waiting for something epic to happen. I was only 4 when the M's won this game so I unfortunately don't remember it. But I was old enough to remember when Kazuhiro Sasaki struck out that traitor Alex Rodriguez to get the Mariners fabled 116th win and Dave was sounding like we just won the World Series. Thats what was so magical about him. He could make any play sound exciting. Its a shame he's gone. He deserved to see the Mariners win a world series and 2001 should have been that year. RIP Dave

I hope everyone enjoys this video. I always hoped that the Mariners would post an official video of the whole inning or even better the whole game. It really makes a difference being able to hear the few minutes leading up to the greatest play in Mariners history. Since they never did, I kind of scraped this one together. I grew up on Dave Niehaus. My dad took me to this game when I was a kid and he passed away about a month ago from cancer. Just like Dave, it's hard to get past not being able to hear a familiar voice that brings you so much joy. I've been a Mariners fan my whole life and I would love to see them finally make the World Series this year. More than anything I would love the Mariners to post the entire Niehaus called game with the accompanying video. I want nothing from this video, I just want others to feel the absolute excitement that I felt as Junior ran around those bases.
I found this video because SB Nation recently posted a "rewind" video about this moment. The call, and the moment itself is exactly why I love sports. I've never been a Mariners fan, but I truly love the story you have of this memory and am very thankful that you shared this.
I remember driving with my dad to go hunting in eastern Washington and listening to this game. 1973 Ford F-250, clear sky & full moon, crappy AM radio with that signature high-pitched whine coming in and out, my dad’s and my emotions going up and down as the game went along: they were up, they were down, the elation and confidence when Randy Johnson entered in relief, the disbelief and desperation when he gave up a run, and the unforgettable joy of hearing that once-in-a lifetime moment when the best announcer I’ve ever heard relates every detail of how the best player I’ve ever seen scored the winning run. My dad wasn’t a perfect man but those four hours with him were. It’s actually the best memory I have with him. Thanks Dave, Joey, ‘Gar, The Kid, and every other person who made that season/game/moment possible. Don’t ever tell me baseball is just a game.
Definitely a I remember where I was moment in Seattle sports history. I too was with my dad. Lucky enough to be sitting in right field for those playoff games. the thing that always hits me when I watch this clip, beyond how amazing Dave was at nailing the big moment, was how perfectly he segued into his last bit "my friends I do know this, that Cleveland has the rock and roll hall of fame, but they will know nothing about rock and roll when they get here" That's what people who didn't listen to him every night might not appreciate - he wasn't just a master of the home run call and the incredible soundbite, he was a master of the art of broadcasting, and everything that comes with it. Man, I miss him
That man's voice was magical. I miss hearing it. So many times he'd call the play BEFORE it happened too. Just like here. Almost felt like it was scripted.

More than that: Seattle's pennant run saved baseball. After 1994's season-destroying strike, fans stayed away; some teams played in nearly empty stadiums (attendance less than 1000) - until Jr.'s return to the roster in mid-August sparked one of the most amazing comebacks in MLB history as the M's went from 12 5 games behind to win the division. Fans tuned in to watch the team that refused to lose and (outside of New York) rooted for them. To be fair, Griffey was a big part of the draw but the late-inning victories Seattle kept putting together to end the season brought viewers back. Strangely, I don't believe MLB considers this one of the top 100 moments in baseball, but every fan can recognize the photo of Jr. beaming his million-watt smile at the bottom of a home-plate victory pile. Me, too. My brothers give me grief but I had tears for the shear joy and release that was shown by the fans, at home, down a run, facing elimination. I bet Griffey covered those three bases in record time. Just to see him FLYING around those bases, heading for home on the crack of the band daring them to try and throw him out was sports magic. The outfielder got the ball cleanly, relay was strong, throw home was accurate. As soon as the ball left Martinez's bat you knew you were looking at a play at the plate. Griffey knew he was not stopping until he crossed home plate-out or safe. He just outran the relay throw That was truly a thing of beauty, from start to finish.
@@joeymac3969 my kids give me grief because they saw me tearing up at Griffeys introduction into the Mariners Hall of Fame. They say a tear fell but I’m pretty sure it was just sweat. 😉
Rizzs' voice is just so soothing. I listen to him on the 710am radio every Ms game, he's masterful. He came to my elementary school, Issaquah Valley Elementary when I was in 5th grade. Did the coolest play by play pretending call about one of my classmates named Maddie!
In the entire broadcast area. Dave brought me home to the Tri-Cities many nights from business trips to Eugene, Billings, Boise, Reno, and beyond. Pre-game, the game, post game. One night I arrived home at 10:30 and the game was tied going into the 9th. I drove around town till it was over. Dave and Rick were quite the broadcast team. I watch each of these videos just to hear "My, Oh My'!! I caught the playoff series in Missoula, and the game with Edgar hitting the 3-run homer and then the grand salami driving through Spokane, I realized I wasn't the only one listening while driving. Get out the rye bread and mustard, it's grand salami time. Several drivers at the red light were yelling and honking their horns.

What makes this even more magical is how Dave Niehaus made the call before it happened: “They would Love a base hit or a double to the gap and could win it with Junior’s speed.” Gets one believing, gets one in a place of anticipatory hope that it’s possible. And then it happened. Just. pure. magic.
Who loved the game more than Dave Niehaus?! He was such a treasure! I was 10 years old when this happened and watched it all unfold with my mom. On tv. Wish I could’ve been there!
Edgar never failed Never ever And his drug test were as clean as a newborn child He fought eye problems to hit like that that's skill not just athletics.
Honestly, I'd rank Edgar Martinez as the greatest pure hitter I've seen in my baseball watching lifetime--(roughly 1969-present.) He could hit line shot lasers falling out of bed!!
Listening to Dave Niehaus still bring tears to my eyes. He was favorite sports announcer for the Mariners Baseball Organization next to his pal Rick Rizz
Dave: "How many times have we said this is the most incredible ballgame of the season?!" Rick: "About 20 times in the last 20 games!"👊🍻 those were fun times
Y4123 having been there to see it, it was as good as you can imagine. I thought the upper deck was gonna come down it was shaking so much from the excitement
I was 12 yrs old when this game happened and as big of a Griffey fan as any kid those days. I remember my parents making me go to bed when it went to extras because I had school the next day and we lived east coast time, so it was pretty late. I snuck out and watched this finish from peeking around the refrigerator!!!😃 Thanks for posting this video!! Sure takes me back!!!
My tears never fail to start up every time I hear Niehaus screaming that call...and when Griffey appears on-screen at blistering speed! To have this happen right on my birthday was incredible!!!
Not a Mariners fan but I've lived in Portland all my life and we always have Mariners games on the radio here. I listened to so many Dave Niehaus broadcasts, so much so that I was probably happier for Dave Niehaus here than for the Mariners themselves.
I’m not a Mariners’ fan, but Niehaus’ call gives me chills! I remember watching this game when I was in high school and seeing Griffey’s ear-to-ear grin in the bottom of that pile always makes me smile!
The shot of Griffey just absolutely booking it around 3rd, combined with the shot of him smiling on the bottom of the dog pile are images burned into my brain. This is absolute pure baseball bliss. I love it and miss it dearly.
Still get goosebumps every time I hear Dave's voice. Not just this game, all of the amazing calls he made. As a kid we listened to probably 70% of the games on the radio. No one better....
I was at a Tigers game at Comerica Park in 2008, and the Mariners were in town. It was just before Dave Niehaus went into the Hall of Fame as a broadcaster. The Tigers made an announcement between innings congratulating Niehaus. As Niehaus leaned out of the visitors' radio booth and waved, everyone in the ballpark stood, turned to the booth and applauded. That was the respect baseball fans had for Niehaus, regardless of their favourite team.
That was my sophomore year of high school. Skipped school to go to the one game play in game vs Angels and went to every playoff game. What a year that was. Love these highlights.
God this give me chills. I was 8 years old when this game happened. I still remember going to the Kingdome during the regular season to watch games with our family and friends. It was a blast! As kids we would always just leave our seats and go to the very top seats and hangout there, and forget the parents haha. Joey Cora, Tino Martinez, Ken Griffey, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson. God the gold old days
I was at the game. Never have heard anything as loud as 57,000 screaming fans when Edgar hit THE DOUBLE. I was watching Jr - who was running so fast i was afraid he'd miss a base & be called out. Now I've watched Dave's call maybe 100 times. Still gives me chills & always get tears in my eyes from Dave's epic call... Rest In Power, Mr. Niehaus!
I was standing in my kitchen watching the TV in the family room when Edgar hit the double, I started jumping up and down yelling for Junior to score. Solidified me as a baseball fan forever.
I had just had rotator cuff surgery and was in a sling, totally iced and wasted on Oxycodone. Game 4, Edgar made me jump to my feet in joy, Game 5... I literally cried. I am pretty sure it was the Oxy. 😂

That lineup was devastating, Griffey, Edgar, Arod, Buehner and TMart. They produced in ridiculous consistency. BlackJack didn't have a chance in this one
I'm from the Midwest, and to be blunt, I never heard of Dave until I saw the "Deep Rewind" of this game that is on SB Nation/Secret Base. But I have to say, that is a phenomenal call on his part. In my subjective opinion, this ranks a half-step below Skip Caray's call of the bottom of the 9th inning of Game 7 of the NLCS between the Pirates and the Braves. That's not an insult, I hope you realize. This is a great call. Unless you guys play the White Sox, I wish you Mariners and Mariners fans all the best. I would love to see you guys get a World Series title someday.

Tigers fan that wasn't born until 2000 but same
@@zetasong I appreciate you all
Rizzs' voice is just so soothing. I listen to him on the 710am radio every Ms game, he's masterful. He came to my elementary school, Issaquah Valley Elementary when I was in 5th grade. Did the coolest play by play pretending call about one of my classmates named Maddie!
To this day, the greatest call by any broadcaster in the history of baseball. It's given me goosebumps over a hundred times. He called it PERFECTLY!
You simply cannot appreciate how much Dave Niehaus meant to the city unless you are from here. RIP
"This is a moment from another world, where cycles close and stories end, where there are heroes, and the heroes win. A moment like this has no business in our world." -Jon Bois, The History of the Seattle Mariners.
I will never not watch this when it comes up, in any form. And it will never not bring tears to my eyes. Thank you.
What makes this even more magical is how Dave Niehaus made the call before it happened: “They would Love a base hit or a double to the gap and could win it with Junior’s speed.” Gets one believing, gets one in a place of anticipatory hope that it’s possible. And then it happened. Just. pure. magic.
One of the greatest calls in Baseball history.
Who loved the game more than Dave Niehaus?! He was such a treasure! I was 10 years old when this happened and watched it all unfold with my mom. On tv. Wish I could’ve been there!
I never tire of Dave’s call of the double. The best.
And Edgar finally takes his rightful place in Cooperstown this Sunday..
Indeed, Earned and well-deserved!!
Edgar never failed
Never ever
And his drug test were as clean as a newborn child
He fought eye problems to hit like that that's skill not just athletics.
Honestly, I'd rank Edgar Martinez as the greatest pure hitter I've seen in my baseball watching lifetime--(roughly 1969-present.) He could hit line shot lasers falling out of bed!!
@@nyterpfan you my friend, have a point
Listening to Dave Niehaus still bring tears to my eyes. He was favorite sports announcer for the Mariners Baseball Organization next to his pal Rick Rizz
Hard to believe this was 20 years ago, seems like yesterday.
Now, 9 more years and still awesome!!
Edgar Hall of Fame!
Yes please
Greatest moment in 40 years of the Mariners. Someday....they will win a pennant. Someday.... they will win the World Series. Someday........
Yeah Lynn..we might see it this fall!!!!!
I'll never get tired of hearing this call. I still remember watching this game as a junior in high school, dreaming of playing in the big leagues
Dave: "How many times have we said this is the most incredible ballgame of the season?!"
Rick: "About 20 times in the last 20 games!"👊🍻 those were fun times
I could watch this a billion times and never get tired of it. My oh my!!
My first time watching this but I can just feel the excitement still, I can't even imagine what it was like being a Mariners fan and witnessing this
Y4123 having been there to see it, it was as good as you can imagine. I thought the upper deck was gonna come down it was shaking so much from the excitement
It's a smaller call amidst a huge inning in a huge game, but I love how Dave calls Cora's bunt: "It's a dandy!"
You gotta love the excitement of the late, great Dave Niehaus.
I could never get tired of watching this and listening to Dave's radio call.
I got chills and feels!!!! Dave Niehaus is missed!
Dorktown has made me a Mariners fan for life now
was at this game with my Dad when I was 5 years old. I will always remember it. Mariners and Dave Niehaus fan for life.
Gotta love the read by Jr. off the bat- dude was already going full-bore around 2nd.
My tears never fail to start up every time I hear Niehaus screaming that call...and when Griffey appears on-screen at blistering speed! To have this happen right on my birthday was incredible!!!
This very evening happened right smack on my 27th birthday!!!! :*)
Man this brings back such a flood of emotions. I really miss Dave, damn he was so good on the call.
Goosebumps. Every time. Dave Niehaus. We will never hear his like again.
Not a Mariners fan but I've lived in Portland all my life and we always have Mariners games on the radio here. I listened to so many Dave Niehaus broadcasts, so much so that I was probably happier for Dave Niehaus here than for the Mariners themselves.
brings a tear to my eye EVERY. DAMN. TIME! thank you to this group of Mariners. you are all LEGENDS!
love how Joey Cora bolts toward 2nd to be with Edgar after that hit...95 Mariners season was the highest baseball has ever made me
My oh MY, thank you Dave. I needed that! Miss your amazing voice!
It seems fitting that Griffey makes the Hall of Fame, 20 years after this happened.
One of the Greatest Series in MLB History! Dave was perfect for this moment, no one could have done better.
I have this as my son's ringtone when he calls/texts me. When I watch it, I still tear up and remember when...
man this still gives me tingles..dave was the best in the bizz..swung on and BELTED
Channeling these vibes for the 2021 wildcard!!
I had loved the game before this, but the Double was when the game loved me back.
Always well up a little bit when I watch this.
I was up high in the 300 level for this amazing game the Kingdome was rocking
First base line. This was such an amazing season, and game, to be a witness to
God this give me chills.
Niehaus!
This at bat is without question why I'm still watching the Mariners today.
This is the best moment ever. My go-to video to lift my spirits.
This is my favorite moment in baseball ever. I love this sport so much.
Willl never forget watching this game in person
I was standing in my kitchen watching the TV in the family room when Edgar hit the double, I started jumping up and down yelling for Junior to score. Solidified me as a baseball fan forever.
Every time I hear this call I get goosebumps! I was at that game and as a 5 year old I couldn't hear squat for 3 days haha.
I'm not a Mariners fan but I teared up hearing this
I was there. Greatest call of all time.
Me a Nationals fan: “yo why am I crying”
Left the Mariners as the only team without a WS appearance
I had just had rotator cuff surgery and was in a sling, totally iced and wasted on Oxycodone. Game 4, Edgar made me jump to my feet in joy, Game 5... I literally cried. I am pretty sure it was the Oxy. 😂
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Japanese-American, too. I know a guy, born in Seattle in 1974, who cried when the Mariners won this game. And, he cries whenever he hears this Dave Niehaus call, today.
My oh my . . . Edgar heading to the hall. So happy and proud!
Not a Mariners fan, but I love this highlight. Niehaus's call is great, but god I love Junior at the bottom of that pile, smiling and laughing. Baseball is so good.
4:06 was a brief moment in history that helped shape my childhood. Junior was truckin!
Did anybody ever find out what that flash of light was going from first base to home plate?
Me too, I miss listening to Dave Niehaus on the radio.
This will never get old! RIP DAVE!!!
"This moment belongs to these three men"
Epic. Epic call. Epic moment. Epic atmosphere. Just all around epic.
I'm glad I was born a Mariners fan. Excuse me I should say Seattle fan.
Also loving the voice of young Rick Rizzs!
Was just going to comment that Dave is a legend but hearing a young Rick here made me smile as well!
This was his first year back with the M's after the impossible task of trying to come after Ernie Harwell in Detroit
Still brings tears (of joy) every time I see this!
That lineup was devastating, Griffey, Edgar, Arod, Buehner and TMart. They produced in ridiculous consistency. BlackJack didn't have a chance in this one
Greatest call in baseball history
Makes me tear up everytime. Wow!
i came here to honor Dave. this is all for him
This just gave me chills
Still gives me goosebumps 🙌🏾
I heard it live. It was insane for 15-year-old me
I remember watching this as a mid teen it was so great seeing Mariners win what a game & series
No offense taken, my friend. It is a great call, one of the greatest in Baseball history.
Still gives me Goosebumps
I love Dave and I love Rizz, too, but I'll never love either of them as much as I love my memories of the 1995 M's season.
