Oh Dave. If only you could've seen these 2022 Seattle Mariners. They did it. They broke the curse. I can only imagine how good it would've sounded to hear you call out the walk off home run that put us back to October baseball. I was way too young to understand even words the last time we were there, and what I wouldn't give to have you back just for one final playoff game for us. But I know that regardless, you'll be with us in spirit, sitting next to Rizzs and Blowers and Sims. You'd really like Goldy, too. I'm sure you two would have an absolute ball in the broadcast booth. You've been such an inspiration for me in announcing and commentating, and you will always be my favorite announcer. Thanks for all the memories. Love and miss you.
In Cleveland we've had Tom Hamilton all these years. I dread so much the day he goes. But this cat Dave Niehaus is the only guy whose calls hit me the way Hammys does. What a voice. His call on Edgar's double is the best call in my lifetime. cheers Seattle. From Cleveland.
My late father and grandfather used to turn the sound off on the TV and put on the radio. Dave's voice was such a big part of my childhood, as I'm sure it was for most of us in the Northwest. "My oh my!" Indeed Dave. Rest in power.
The man was a vital part of my childhood. I preferred to listen to the game unfold through Dave’s voice than watch it on TV. That was how great he was……
Swung on and BELTED deep to left field, and that one will fly, fly away! My oh my! Besides his iconic catchphrases, what set him apart was his incredible enthusiasm. When he was announcing a home run, he sounds so thrilled he might as well have hit it himself!
I rarely miss lost relatives, as in I don’t get emotional thinking about them but when I think about Dave and listening to him calling the games on KIRO when I was a kid and how I will never hear that voice again or experience baseball like that again it makes me sad and often does bring a tear to my eye. Dave felt like immediately family to me. I listened to him tell a new tale just about every night from Sept to Oct. He will never be forgotten.
Dave Niehaus will always be the “ Voice of the Mariners”! I am lucky to have the Commemorative Tribute Video of Dave’s calls! One of my prized possessions! To hear Dave call “The 116 Wins” “1995” Absolutely Wonderful! #TrueToTheBlue
Swing and a high fly ball deep to center field, back goes Lewis to the track, to the wall, makes the leap... AND MAKES THE CATCH! MY OH MY! I heard of Griffey-esque and Cameron-esque, but I just saw a LEWIS-ESQUE CATCH! Same direction as well, and he did a little Griffey tribute along the way and that got away of trouble from the A's!
9:50 Mmm, that delicious moment of schadenfreud when A-Rod came back to play against us. I grew up going to the Kingdom and Safeco; I got quite a few balls signed by the 1997 and 2001 teams. So many good memories. I miss Dave.
this was the voice of my childhood. not many games i can watch of the 90's mariners i havent seen with my grandpa and dad. time goes on but sometimes i like to go back to appreciate the things ive seen that arent here anymore. miss your voice dave. it's calming to hear it again.
I originally got interested in the mariners thanks to Jon Bois and Secret base doing their "History of the Mariners" documentary and like. God if they aren't wrong about Dave Niehaus making even the most most blowout games an absolute joy to listen to.
Dave Niehaus for the Mariners , Steve Raible for the Seahawks and Kevin Callabro for the Sonics all give me chills listening to their play by play calls. Awesome Trifecta. 🎉 you can feel the excitement
I knew what would happen if I watched this video, yet I did it anyways. We miss you Dave. Staying up past bedtime to listen to you as quiet as I can so my parents wouldn’t find out. They knew, but always let me listen to baseball.
I cannot count, or even begin to remember the numerous nights I was returning home in the Pacific NW, even as far as Southern Idaho, and listening to the game, highlights, and post-game. I would be tired, but his call of the game would keep me going. Rick Rizz played his role so well. Dave was the star, everybody knew it. People say Junior saved baseball in Seattle, but Dave exemplified the sport, called the game, and if you could visualize it, put you on the field, in the on-deck circle. His call of Dad and Junior going back-to-back has always resonated with me. Had the privilege of meeting him and Rick one day. What a remarkable man, both of them. Dave, you are missed sir!
Listening how he could broadcast a game will never be touched again. Dave had the ability to call a game with equal enthusiasm that had shown no difference whether it was mired in mediocrity or with one with late playoff implications equally. Granted there was always a bit of a home field advantage when the Mariners did something extra special that deserved an extra dollop of mustard. He was graced with the ability to transport someone into the environment, and paint the actions and surroundings with his words. I just wish that down the road we are graced with baseball broadcasters that can equal the talent and skill he carried and shared with us all.
There has never been a more fun team to be a fan of for me than the mid 90s Mariners. The Kid, Edgarrrrrrrr, Bone, Big Unit, our skipper Sweet Lou. We had Arod and Tino for a bit. Fassero, Moyer, Wilson, Cora. All of that was made so much better with the legend Dan Niehaus on the call. My oh my!
2:23 "Swung on and a fly ball hit deep into the gap in right center field. The Kid on his horse, back to the warning track, THE WALL, MAKES THE LEAP AND MAKES AN UNBELIEVABLE CATCH! My oh my!! He is down at the 380' marker. And it's one of the most incredible catches you will ever want to see. There is no way a human being gets to that ball." My favorite part of this call is how quickly he gets all those words in as the play is happening and the way he raises his volume when Griffey gets to the wall. Dave was an absolute treasure. Not even a Mariners fan, I just love listening to his calls.
@11:15 I was able to go to one game, a Mariner's game, at the Kingdome as a kid, before it was demolished. The Kingdome looked like a giant clam, the Mariners won, and then before going back home we got Ivar's clam chowder in a bread bowl and the deal was SEALED.
On another adventure in my dad's '89 Silverado, the little monochrome screen reading 710 AM as Dave's glorious voice filled us with every emotion imaginable...Dave defined my childhood. When Dave passed, I called my dad and he immediately had to hang up...the feeling was mutual, it was like a losing a close relative. We would mute the TV just to listen to him on the radio. As life is constantly changing, he was the consistent voice that was always there to greet us every summer. His voice still fills me with goosebumps, just as it does with tears. We will never forget you Dave!
They don't make commentators like this anymore. They are all extinct I'm honestly trying hard to hold back tears and having goosebumps while rooting for the Mariners. Been a fan since 1996 right after witnessing the 1995 season. Go Mariners !!!
Lou Piniella's tantrum is the one of the most beautifully dumb and best moments of Mariners' history. He was SO worked up, and he made SUCH an absurd fuss, and then you see Griffey giggling like crazy in the dug out, and Dave is clearly having the time of his life calling it.
Awe, Dave! I always think of my dad when I hear your voice. I can't tell you the big smiles you put on dads face. He loved the Mariner's, he never missed a game on TV or on KIRO Radio. My 2 brother's and my husband and I go to be at the King Dome with dad in 96 or 97. We miss you and the team from the 90's, so very much!
I especially loved hearing Dave during spring training. Many games weren’t televised, so he would paint an even more vivid picture. After 5 months without baseball, his voice was comforting
Beautiful - he brought enthusiasm, excitement, color, joy to the game... his sound, his phrasing, his energy are incredible. One of the best to ever do it. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you. Dave was the greatest!! My only issue with this is that you didn’t include the lead up to the double. Dave called it. “The Mariners would love to get a base-hit into a gap, and they could win it with Junior’s speed…and, the pitch…” Of all the great calls, by the greatest, that call stands out as his very best. That moment was thee ultimate moment in Mariners history, so it only makes sense that it would be his best - and most famous call. Love you, Dave!
I can just imagine Dave cheering on the Mariners this year as they give hope to the fans of Seattle. They're doing some great stuff this year and I know Dave is proud.
I can't care quite as much about baseball without his voice that game out of the radio of my father's pickup as he drove all over the 509 or 208... the voice of killdeer in the pasture and Dave Niehaus on the radio were my signs of Spring. @2:43 of course (this play was before my time but I knew of it as a kid), Junior was injured by that catch... I've been through thinking I was really injured and wasn't and thinking I was fine but wasn't... I believe in just wishing for the best and otherwise waiting. @3:31 "19 long years of frustration is over" 😅 @4:24 I ran out down the driveway and down the road yelling like the kid I was. I can't do that if the Zags win the Final Four over UCLA and the championship on Monday. But I have more sophisticated ways to celebrate, I suppose...
I can't believe other teams didn't want to pick him up. I know the Mariners haven't yet even made the World Series, it's almost a shame that Niehaus' A+ broadcasting wasn't present at some of the most iconic baseball moments of all time. He seemed so pasionate about his craft though, and Mariners fans will probably remember him as the best announcer long after most of us are gone.

Truth!
You got that right, pardner! He WAS the best.
Not one day, and every time I listen to this, it is incredible and it breaks my heart at that same time.
When Cal hit that HR, my only thought was "It just continues. My Oh My!"
He was my dad’s best friend dad. I grew up with them. He gave a baseball signed by the 95-96 mariners.
To me it isn't a Mariners Game without his voice.
Rest in peace.
Back in the day we used to mute the TV and turn on the radio during Mariners games just to listen to him.
@Mark we sure did! He was The best in the business
To me the saddest thing is he never got to call a World Series. Miss ya Dave…
The GOAT OF PLAY BY PLAY...RIP DAVE

My dad would do that too….
Hearing his voice and jr’s swing… it’s what every kid imagined hearing growing up
The man was a vital part of my childhood. I preferred to listen to the game unfold through Dave’s voice than watch it on TV. That was how great he was……
My dad used to watch the game on TV, but turn down the volume all the way and listen to the radio instead.
Nothing makes my eyes well up faster than a full bodied “SWUNG ON AND BELTED” from Dave.
Earlier that day, I was laid off from a job I had for 17 years. Then I come home to the news about Dave. One of the worst days of my life.
Hearing his calls always makes me tear up. Every time.
I bet Dave Niehaus is saying, "My, Oh My" when Cal Raleigh hit a walk-off home run to help the Seattle Mariners break their 21-year playoff drought.
Swung on and BELTED deep to left field, and that one will fly, fly away! My oh my! Besides his iconic catchphrases, what set him apart was his incredible enthusiasm. When he was announcing a home run, he sounds so thrilled he might as well have hit it himself!
I think Dave really enjoyed announcing Lou Pinella kicking his hat around the field.
Was thinking the same thing.
Dave Niehaus= Best announcer in baseball.
Dave got better with age!! He will always be remembered
13 game winning streak. I'm thinking Niehaus is here doing his part as an angel on the field for these Mariners.
After last night's win and clenching the wild card for the first time in years you can just hear Dave Niehaus with his MY OH MY :)
With Rick Rizzs beside him.
