As an old timer myself 😉, I first started watching Bill Alexander paint back in the early 80's, subsequently taking up the hobby myself shortly thereafter.
After years of watching Bill work his 'magic' on the canvas, and as I continued struggling along attempting to improve my skills and paintings, suddenly one day out of the blue a "new guy" (Bob Ross) & fellow student of Bill was hosting Bills' show !!
I remember being upset at the time, and struggling to watch Bob Ross, since I didn't particularly care for him hosting, or his different techniques of painting than I had learned and was used to after years of watching Bill faithfully.
But I struggled through watching Bob, and I eventually got used to him & his methods. (Well, everything except maybe "hugging a happy little tree" 😉 here & there)
Long story short, I ended up watching Bob Ross for years also, and was saddened and quite surprised to hear when he suddenly passed away.
It's unfortunate that after their long friendship, that Bill and Bob parted ways in frustration & anger in the end. Unfortunately, this happens quite often between friends, when money, and fame get in the middle. Of course hindsight is almost always 20/20, and Bill could have been proud of Bob Ross for continuing the craft Bill basically started/invented himself, Bob on the other hand could have given Bill the credit he deserved, when Bob took the reins. In fact, many people that later watched Bob Ross, never even knew about Bill Alexander, and that he had taught Bob everything he knew about painting, since Bob only mentioned it on air on ONE brief occasion if memory serves.
And now that both of them are long gone, it really puts into perspective for us, how insignificant arguments and holding animosity like that is. Because what could have been so easily avoided at the time, in the end only hurts those two involved. 26:56

It is interesting to see the different styles in painting and talking while painting between Bill and Bob Ross.
Bill seems a bit more spontaneous and chaotic in a very positive way and he is funnier, while Bob was the calm and gentle one.
    Love them both.
Although I have to say, that the Bob Ross videos seem more -what's the right word -contrived? Especially when you know the whole story. I think Bill and Bob would have made a better team, than Bob going down that road with the Kowalski's.
BTW, Happy Birthday, Bill! You will live forever in our hearts.

Natalie, that is a good question. There may be some for sale. Occasionally private collectors contact us about wanting to sell. Usually it is someone who has inherited Bill’s painting and they are interested in selling. There is no where to view his paintings. However if you come to our Live Event on Saturday you will see some that haven’t been seen before. You will get to see just what a Master Artist he was.

Wilhelm's subject matter is generally the same as Bob Ross's but the variety he shows in details is far greater. This demonstrates his abilities as an artist is also far greater.
The student never surpassed the master.
One thing I noticed was the paints used by Onkel Willi are fairly normal paints. Bob Ross always said his technique was easy to master and anyone could do it. That was true only if you also bought his line of extra thick paints though.
Wilhelm's technique is more "truly universal" and he could rightly say that anyone could do his style of painting with some effort and practice.
The captions don't quite match what he's actually saying. I guess you have to have an ear for Germlish like I do having grown up hearing it every day.

    • @nckhed
      @nckhed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Bill occasionally mentioned that having very thick paint was important for the technique to work. Bob mentioned it often because many people wrote him and said they were having problems with the technique not working and it was usually due to oil paint that was not thick enough. It really does matter. Besides, the Bob Ross paints are terrible these days, which leads to my next point.
Check out a documentary called "Happy Trees: Betrayal & Greed", or something to that effect. If you want to upset with Bob Ross, you should look no further than his own business partners, who are still in charge of Bob Ross Inc. They screwed him over while he was on his deathbed. They screwed over the entire Ross family. They also screwed over Bill Alexander in the process, and stole from Gary and Kathwren Jenkins, husband and wife floral artists.
