There are incredible drummers who get into the studio setting and collapse "under the microscope" of recording. It's a _totally_ different animal than playing in a rehearsal space or live concert environment. Only the _best_ of the *BEST* shine in the studio environment and can lay down classic tracks with minimal time/money spent. Not only was Jeff Pocaro a human metronome, he was a human _compressor/EQ._ His control of dynamics and "bloom" of the drums and cymbals were unlike any other. A true legend. RIP. A true GOAT.
One of the things that must be commented on when discussing this Master is his modesty. In an interview on TH-cam, he says he is not a great reader, doesn't do drum solos and is basically just a 'timekeeper'. Coming from one of the best drummers EVER that is incredible. Don't forget, he played on Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees ". I tried for ages to master 'Lowdown' then found out it was Jeff Porcaro and realised why I couldn't crack it !!!!!!!
His time is what always gets me about the guy. The feel of his time. My favorite drummer since I was 16 and heard Steely Dan's Black Friday. They never rocked that hard before or after. The fade on that thing when he starts pumping the triplet kicks and the bell on the ride. And no matter what he plays his time is flawless. And not robotic... it's got this slight swing to it.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO. This is one of my two most favorite tracks of Mr. Porcaro's , along with Till The End !! Of course, among the hundreds of great tracks he played on !!!!!! Thanks again !!!!
While listening to my Toto IV album back in '82, I remember that it was the first time that I (a non-drummer) really noticed and enjoyed the interesting and cool drumming on each song. And that's not happened with any other album since. Jeff Porcaro is sorely missed.
"Soy un perdedor"...I love this song!!! 😀👍 Thank you Roberto to remind me! Jeff and Carlos Vega are amazing in all their work with Luis Miguel! (Luis Miguel is not very popular here in France).
Just imagine all the incredible stuff he would have done if he had lived to a ripe old age. The man was a drum machine. Awesome!
yes Russell, he would have made us dreaming again!
Pardon me, He made the drum machine look like a toy gun...
Wow! The groove was in him! For me, he was the best drummer of all the times...R.I.P., Jeff!!!
The legend and king of those signature double crashes. Don't think anyone did em any better in grooves and fills.
Christopher, that's the Porcaro' sound!!!👍💖, for ever!
Paiste paiste paiste.. Porcaro + Paiste + Pearl = PPP
This guy was incredible. Probably the first take.
I think this was take 1 you hear with the raw audio, the one that ended up on the CD is another take, probably take 2
I always loved that snare drum sound. It's a jeff porcaro sound.

So many great drummers on the Planet. But when he's in the room there is no other....
That’s my favourite drummer right there. Even after 32 years!
Superb. I miss him. He was a huge influence on my playing.
I miss him too, he was a influence for so many drummers....

It looks like he barely holds his sticks at the end of his fingertips, like a feather, but can pound them like a hammer, when needed . Amazing.
I'm pretty convinced that had he lived, Jeff would be the most recorded drummer of all time. He was MONEY in the studio and had such incredible feel.
I think he would be drummer and producer!
one of the best studio drummer
I don't know why the ultimate time keeper needed to wear a wrist watch
🤔🤣 the guy was an absolute master and will forever be missed ❤
Miss you, Jeff ❤
The groove máster!!!!!
Incredible, on point, like a volcano! ❤👍
El mejor del mundo por siempre

Perfect 😍👍🏻
Merci Jacques!!👍 Faut garder en vie ces choses là!
jeff porcaro always made you want to play with him. that is his big secret. try playing over his groove and you will feel it.
Jeff Porcaro is more enjoyable to listen to on a crappy video camera recording than a lot of drummers recorded in professional studios.

Till The End is Amazing!! So hard to play like Jeff!

Introducing 6/8 shuffle intro rock music
This snare
monster¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
He recorded about six songs of a CD with Luis Miguel in 1988, do you have any of that?
"Soy un perdedor"...I love this song!!! 😀👍 Thank you Roberto to remind me! Jeff and Carlos Vega are amazing in all their work with Luis Miguel! (Luis Miguel is not very popular here in France).
@@STEPHANEBOUICHET Thank you! greetings from San Diego CA.
Máster!
A no bullshit hitter.
And someone doesn't like this???
Nobody doesn't like this!😂
Is that a large ash can to his left? RIP Jeff Porcaro!
Is that an ashtray next to him?
Maybe Jon! a big one!😄
Why are the cymbals placed so high, not very practical for quick reach
I assume it's because he started playing drums from a young age on a normal-sized kit, and he just got used to high cymbals.
@@lmahu6627 Ok makes sense, thanks for clearing that out👍🏻
It could also be a recording technique to make more separation between mics FWIW
Did he yawn at 0.31?
I don't think Tery!! 😄 I thonk he lived this track inside of him! 😂
adds to the rich legacy of analog - no algorithm will take two chords (Cmaj7 and Em) to create Eleanore Rigby. Digital is rubbish.
It’s a shame his allergies did him in.
look very stiff?
