This Landmine Clearing Machine Actually Existed, But Can It Clear Buildings?

  • Welcome to another episode of Instruments of Destruction! Today I am building a demolition vehicle based on the Sherman Crab Flail Tank. This was a real tank that could clear minefields by spinning a drum covered in chains that would slam against the ground to trigger mines. It's a ridiculous concept that was actually pretty effective. So I want to repurpose it into a demolition vehicle and see how it does at demolishing buildings!

    About the game:
    Instruments of Destruction features an advanced physics-based destruction system. You can demolish every structure in the game piece by piece. In addition, every object you see in the game world--save for small decorative plants and rocks--is part of the physics system. Each element of the world interacts with each other and together they create a physical, visceral world to play with.
    Build Your Vehicle
    Build a vehicle your way, with an ever-expanding array of parts and pieces. Using an intuitive vehicle construction system that also lets you customize your vehicles' appearance and controls, you'll always have fun creating your next awesome invention.
    From simple splitters to advanced joints, a variety of parts slowly unlock as you play through the game, and each unlocks countless new possibilities.
    While some vehicles will perform better than others in accomplishing your objectives, it's always a bit more fun to get creative and go a little off script. Optional bonus challenges and objectives will reward more creative builders and add more replayability.

    Hey scrapman! So I used to do mine/IED clearing. We still have mine flails in use. They are more purpose built nowadays, with a longer body, driver in the back and blast shields in front to protect the machine. Another thing to do is we have small weights at the end of our chains. A couple other clearance vehicles to check out are the Buffalo and husky. They're not really destructive but they're designed to get blown up. Your little conversation was pretty close to what my job was minus the flails. "Why don't we just drive over em"

      The US Military still has Abrams mountable mine flails, but when we transitioned from the cold war doctrine combat to the modern MOUT ant urban combat roles they were, for the most part put into storage, still saw a few mounted in 1999, but by the time 4id had gone to NTC in 2001, they were removed. But, I'm guessing you were in a while ago, or you were stationed in Korea, because that's the last place I saw an AVLB/drove one. Too bad there isn't Oil leakage mechanics in these games, if there was I'd suggest he makes a M9 ACE that doesn't leak like a siv.

    Fun fact, some Sherman tanks opted to keep the chain rail on the front for extra protection. From the ranges they engaged at, usually above (700m) a shell would not be able to penetrate the 33 mm of extra metal. The extra armour allowed the ally tanks to be used farther apart and less together. Which is vital to warfare.

    As one engineer said, its not stupid if it works. The idea of chains is a great idea, you can buy heavy duty chains from just about anywhere, even back when this was made, so its easy to get replacements for the parts that are taking the bulk of the damage once they are finally cut up enough to stop working. A lot of military designs make the mistake of relying heavily on specialized parts, which raises the cost of production massively, the arms were likely not cheap, but the chains themselves would protect the mechanism from a lot of the damage meaning you can get a lot of use out of them before it would be a issue.
    Whoever designed the first mine clearer using chains deserves all the praise.

  • @user-ud8zy2dv1k
    @user-ud8zy2dv1k 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    honestly its a very well thought out design for its sheer impracticality in concept(as in it seems stupid, but it works). the chains are not solid arms, so they can deform with uneven terrain while still delivering enough force to force a detonation if they hit. this fluidity in structure, along with the 'free-hanging(as in it can swing upwards if caught in the blast)' arm drastically reduce the damage the upwards penetrating mine has on the device, creating a machine that can easily hit a whole bunch of mines without loosing too much effectiveness.

    The Sherman minesweeper was such a shock to the Germans in June 1944 that often times seeing one rolling toward them across a field terrorized the infantry so much, they surrendered in the dozens to hundreds… so, one American, British, or Canadian tank would have to stop clearing duties to find a way to accept a mass surrender. It truly is terrifying. Today, the modern equivalent takes 2 hours of checklist to even turn on and roll forward, and after detonating one mine stops, shuts down, does 4 hours of check lists, then starts over at the top of the 2 hour checklist… 1944? BANG!!! and kept going… BANG, BANG, BANG!!! Kept going… despite being “less safe”… what a difference.

    Thats really cool, Scrapman can you play Homebrew Patent Unkown, its a really unpopular game, but its way more complex than main assembly for comparison, community is really good, and its quite a challenge to make great creations, i challenge you to make a fully working baja vehicle

    You should watch TopGear where they tried to take down a house, they used a similar tank, it just didn't have chains it had "swords"
