    I’m a huge fan of 20” kicks too. I recently got my end game (probably a lie) “kit”. It’s actually 2 kits. Both are PDP concept maple in satin black. All in all, I have 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 inch toms and a 20 and 24 inch kicks. So, I understand you looking at the other kit with the 22” kick. Lovely kit there Mike!
    Might be worth checking out those Inde DTS mounts at some point, just replaces one lug rather than the Gretsch 2 lug version, and works in a similar way to the Ludwig atlas but without the bulk! Best of both worlds there!

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like what iNDe does with most of products, but I'm kind of a nerd for keeping the brackets/mounts /etc on a lot of drums consistent with the brand. Especially helpful with resale if that's ever an option.
      I do use their snare mount though, and if I had a vintage kit with inferior hardware, I'd certainly rely on some of their no drill mounts to make those older drums a little more roadworthy.

  • @johnschweiger6486
    @johnschweiger6486 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great playing and great video Mike. I bought a new Brooklyn kit from Steve Maxwell in the expresso burst wrap color. It was first new American Gretsch in 34yrs. I wanted a USA custom but my wallet just couldn’t open up that much, so I went with the Brooklyn series at almost half the price of the customs. I bought new, so that’s a much different variable from buying used like you do and many others I know, but that’s me.
    Having said all that, the Brooklyn’s make the grade! I use the factory Gretsch heads and for the amount of music I play at home and live, they suit my needs perfectly. I like you, removed and sold the suspension mounts and went with DTS using the 4825 tom brackets.
    I’m very happy with the look and the tone. I like the tone you get from your toms, could you share your tuning technique with those who are interested? Thanks.
    Again, you have a cool channel!

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  ปีที่แล้ว

      I love DTS mounts, but since this is my more "modern" kit in the array I use, I'll probably stick with the isolation mounts so I have some drums with that ultra sustain tone that is sometimes useful.
      But visually and practically for gigging, I just love DTS. I bet your kit is gorgeous, that espresso burst is really cool.

    Really enjoy your videos. I've learned a lot from your videos and gotten lots of good ideas for my own setups. I'm curious about the Gibraltar internal mic mount that you use. I tried the PDP mount that clips to the outside hoop on the reso side of the bass drum, and I've found that the cowbell that I had mounted to the bass drum hoop on the batter side made the bass drum mic make a really loud knocking sound. I'm wondering if you've ever tried the Gibraltar mount with a hoop-mounted cowbell and whether it caused you any similar problems.

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have the dunnet hoop mounted kick mic attachment, but I know it has an isolation gasket to try and prevent that. I think you have to be disciplined with how much you mount of the kick. I had a similar issue last year when I mounted a clapstack off my kick.
      BTW, kick drum mic mounts are a topic that's been on my to-do list for videos. So glad to now others take notice and appreciate that sort of thing.

  • @Imabassplayer2

    Very nice sounding kit. I would love a 24 13 16 18 kit, or 22 13 16. I tend to like bigger sizes personally. But I do still want and like 10 and 12 toms. As for the badge issue all you need to do is move the mount to the other lug on the other side of the badge. Then both badges will face outward.

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not gonna say I didn't already buy the 22/13/16. in the same sizes....
      As for the mount, since I gig with mostly a 4 piece (20/12/14) I left the badge on the 12 reversed for the standard mid tom position, but it's an easy enough switch to make if I need to.

    Great video as always, Mike!! I’m a big fan of Gretsch Drums as well so it’s always cool to see you showcase some really cool Gretsch gear. This Brooklyn kit might be my favorite kit you’ve played on this channel, it looks and sounds amazing.
    I play a Catalina Maple with a 22 kick but someday would like to add a Renown or Brooklyn with a 20 as an alternative kit sound. After some time with these, how would you compare this Brooklyn kit to the Renown kit you had with these sizes in terms of versatility? And if any, what sound/feel differences have you noticed between the several Tom mounts you’ve used for both? (Or other mounts you’ve used on other kits- any experience with the Ludwig Atlas mounts?)

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jake, and yes, this kit is also one of my favorites I've highlighted on the channel over the years. I think the quality build is noticeably improved, but it's very similar in terms of components and pieces of the puzzle. Shell is noticeably higher quality, and was just easier to tune and get where I wanted.
      20's are my favorite versatile kick size.
      As for the tom mounts, I think this mount I added on these drums are really a great balance of what I like in DTS, and what people really appreciate in suspension mount systems. So I'm glad t made the change.

    Just subscribed to the channel excellent content. I’m also a working drummer and I’ve picked up some great tips from you. The microphone stand inside the bass drum is one of them, as I tend to put a beta 52 and lay it on the pillow inside the kick. One question I have is what microphone do you use as an overhead when playing live?

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A Beta52 will be tricky to put on that specific mount, but it’s great for plenty of other mics like the Audix D6, or something that plugs in horizontal instead of vertical.
      I typically use a Shure KSM137 as an OH on live situations. If I add a snare mic it’s typically a Sennheiser e604

    • @Monsterdrumma

      Gretsch are super musical, they can tune anywhere without losing life in their sound. No room can deaden them, they cut big time, super fat and warm sound with major cut and projection! I am a Gretsch die hard so I figured I would give you my take. They record perfectly also and engineers say this as well as most drummers record with them regardless of their endorsements. In Nashville and engineer told my friend most all use Gretsch but the other brand was yours Ludwig which I also do love Gretsch are just my favorite. Also older Jasper era Gretsch sound better as the shells were thinner, not sure why those specs were changed when Keller took over.

    I’m a Sonor guy, but I’m looking to add a Ludwig or Gretsch. Neusonic, CM, Renown, or Brooklyn?

      I've owned both the Renowns and Brooklyns and they are fantastic drums, but you really can't go wrong with either Ludwig or Gretsch in their professional tiers.

      @@malonedrum yeah, it’s such a difficult decision. Do I want 30° edges or undersized shells? (Ludwig undersizes by 6mm while Sonor does by 12mm.)
