I went to Auroville as a tourist few years ago. I felt something was wrong. And the fact that people had to pay to buy a house but couldnt get back the money if they had or wanted to leave..
Since the mother left, this place became commercialized. This is sad.

That's how the Asuras in Auroville want it to be. When they speak about the Mother or consciousness, know that it's hogwash to collect your money, blood and sweat and get free labor

From what I’m learning, it looks like people have to pay to build their house on a pice of land allocated to them by and owned by Auroville. And it’s a very closed off community, you can’t just access it unless you’re either staying in their guesthouse or an Aurovillian yourself. Which means you’ve built a house with your own money on land that you could be evicted from. It’s beyond messed up no one thinks how illegal this should be.

Commercial is nothing wrong, money is a tool, just like any tool. can be used for good or be used for bad things. Money create more opportunities for the population, so they can have more time when more money create more stable comfortable living. If you are constantly thinking about financial issues you would have no time to think about spirituality and other topics to evolve.
But ripping people off is wrong.

This was incredibly good! I’m in Auroville for the second time to stay a week. I did think about joining and then I read their info on how that process works and immediately, alarm bells went off. They want people to come in with a minimum of 15 lakhs, pay their own way for two or three years with no definite timeline for becoming a newcomer and then an Aurovillian. You have to build your own house and pay for it on their land, so that if they boot you out of their community cult, you’ve lost your house and your money. Plus the managers of this guesthouse I’m staying in have proven to me that aurovillians can be villainous and horrible. This is not a good place to come back to

I was in the same situation. I came there, and I adored south India when I saw the beautiful greenery. I am from the north but immigrated out of India. I was astonished that they need 4 years of your life to waste just so you can put a name into them considering the application. Secondly the 20 lakh (2 million) rupees cost was like what are they talking about, and then the guest house I was staying at was made by someone else.
I had so many ideas of creating employment and other educational institutions in auroville but I was disappointing that it was just a rip off essentially.
To create a sustainable community and a sufficient market they should allow people especially younger ones (like me) should be leased land on 5 month contracts in exchange of 80% of the production, only to be renewed to see what a person can do, so more farms can be established and more food can be produced. The had a model of keeping scarcity so they can have a good control of population.
Majority of the food came form outside even though the land and climate is perfect to grow surplus of food - fruits, dairy etc. And they had a monopoly as well for certain businesses. I was thinking about creating cheese workshop but they said that there is already one cheese maker. Very weasel like altitude.

I travel to spiritual places in the South. I am from the North and I just left Auroville today after a stay of 3 days. It was awful. The guest house people were racist and rude. It was a pointless place with a very negative and strange vibe. I tried so hard to like it but only local Tamil workers were good people and I felt a relief coming into Pondicherry as I left and just being around regular people again. It felt risky and dangerous to be in Auroville. People seemed off and very weird. It is sad that the dream that was seen by Divine Mother has come to this.

I am French, I stayed there for 9 months 20 years ago, it took me 9 months to understand that everything was false. So I must not be very intelligent. It is a disguised commercial enterprise. I worked for free, I had to pay for my accomodation, my food which was very poor. It is not a spiritual place at all. Lots of people are abused there, foreigners or Indians. These vultures surf on the need for spirituality of people, and by this fact, the best of humanity.

The real Auroville is not on the ground. It is in the spirit of Auroville where all the work is done. It wil take hundreds of years before the aim will be reached...

Of course, the spirit of Auroville is carried by many people across the world. As I've always said Auroville cannot be in South India as it's destroyed beyond repair.

It is both really sad and infuriating at the same time what is happening in Auroville. Been there three times: twice as a visitor and stayed there for a few days in 2022. Called it intuition, but I felt something off in Auroville in 2022. I felt a lack of coherence and true guidance that is so palpable that it transpires in all corners of Auroville. Watching this video and others as well, my very simplistic conclusion is this one: Auroville has become a cult. It has all the red flags of a cultish community. And THAT is very dangerous.

I’m here in an Auroville guesthouse right now. I was here six months ago and was so impressed and found such peace in The Mother and Sri Aurobindo, I came back at a difficult time in my life right now searching for peace. Staying in a different guesthouse than I did the last time, and this place is an absolute hellhole. Not managed at all, broken AC remote, AC not working in the worst month of summer because the keycard and slot don’t work. An aggressive dog left loose near the front gate so I couldn’t go collect food I’d ordered and had to go to sleep hungry. No drinking water and had to hound the crazy lady running this place for hours to get drinking water running again. Staying here has shattered any illusions I had about Auroville being some sort of a utopian dream. It’s a monstrosity and I wish I had booked a hotel room in pondycherry instead and explored that beautiful city for a week

Just what I think, there's something wrong in Auroville's relationship to money.
Unless they are fully autarcic, wich does not seem to be the case, their interactions with the outer world requires real money. I don't think that;, e.g. their suppliers; accept to be paid in "Aurovillian tickets".
The very little money that the residents makes goes almost entirely into the city's treasure chest. Unless they've kept money in accounts outside the town, the very little money they keep actually ostracizes them from the outer world.
All the properties, houses... in Auroville belong to the community. Who actually controls the capital that all that real estate represents?
