My father contracted polio at age 10. He was in a wheelchair the rest of his life. This is an important discussion for people to understand not only polio but how vaccines work.
The C vaxxes and the Polio vaxxes are "apples and oranges".
Anyone who uses Polio (or measles, or small pox) as a model for the risk/reward/necessity of the C jabs is selling you snake oil.

1) "the covid vaccine was made too quickly and not tested long enough". At least it went through testing. The smallpox vaccine was never once tested before being used in humans. In fact Jenner had no clue if the vaccine would even work in the first place.
2) "the covid vaccine uses messenger RNA". So does the smallpox vaccine. Messenger RNA is critical for a live virus vaccine. It's also critical for life in general.
3) "The covid vaccine causes adverse effects". Have you seen the shit caused by the smallpox vaccine? Myocarditits, pericarditis, brain inflammation, spread of the vaccinia virus to other areas by accidentally touching your vaccine site wound and touching another part of your body, and other annoying stuff.
If anything the smallpox vaccine is actually _worse_ than the covid vaccines.

This one really hits home for me. I had a family member who was born a few years before the Salk vaccine became available. He suffered the effects of polio--very debilitating for him--his entire life. He also died early.
The anti-vaxxers are so deluded.

Same here. My grandfather contracted polio in 1955, just before the vaccine was widely available. He lost the use of his legs as a result.

Why can't flies be part of the vector for polio? For instance, a fly lands on some polio-infected fecal matter, the same fly lands on some food which someone then eats? What if you have a lot of flies around your picnic and latrine/outhouse?
Poliovirus does not replicate in flies. They don’t pick up enough virus by landing on feces to transmit it.
Good point. That probably was the main vector pre-1900. So most babies got polio that way, but their maternal antibodies protected them. Then along came extreme hygiene in the 1900s, so no flies, no infant infection, so when the 10 year olds (say) were hit with polio later, it was much more serious because they had no immunity.
Vincent has some good videos on this, but he seems to be rather coy about it now, maybe because he fears this knowledge will increase vaccine hesitancy.
@@roncarlin3209 There were still plenty of flies throughout the 20th century. The thing that changed was water treatment and wastewater treatment along with indoor plumbing. Polio spreads through an oral=>fecal route. This was stepped-up during the polio epidemic of the late 1940s-early 1950s, when a vaccine came out. That is even though only about 1 person in 1000 who get polio have serious after-effects from it. Still, that's a lot of people! PEOPLE WANTED THAT VACCINE! Parents lined up around the block to get their children vaccinated! Babies were vaccinated shortly after birth, and almost no one objected. Unlike the epidemic of the 1890s, many people survived the infection, and spent years disabled. After the vaccine, the number of polio cases decreased rapidly - it was in the single-digits per year in the US in the 1970s. Then, came the anti-vax movement. It had been there all along, among some religious and cultural groups, but it became more widespread. Then, (somehow), it became politicized, and many people are trying to make polio great again.

Slightly related: iirc MD (Dr. Phill Hammond) writing in Private Eye (UK based publication) noted a reduction in gastro infections in the early days of Covid due to all the messaging about washing hands.
The Sabin vaccine was introduced into the U.K. in 1961, it was administered on a sugar cube, the only time as children we were encouraged to eat a sugar lump! As far as I am aware I never had the Salk injected form, but I maybe mistaken; however the vaccine used as prophylactic anti tetanus in urgent care and the ED is typically a triple vaccine of diphtheria, tetanus and polio.
Not here in Germany, unfortunately. The regular booster typically referred to as just "Tetanus", which you should get on a once-per-decade schedule, is actually a quadruple of tetanus, diphteria, polio and whooping cough, but the urgent care tetanus shots are usually tetanus-only. Not sure whether that's for cost or acceptance reasons, maybe a mix of both ...

When I was child and the public health nurse was coming to my school to immunize against polio, and 3 others there were people who said that an MD was the one to ask because they thought the doctor could do a better job.

Where? How?.....he didn't actually give any detailed information or provide valid scientific methodologies. He just made assertions and said he is a virologist so he is right.
I think the greatest feeling in government and leadership during the pandemic was science communication. If efficacy was addressed faithfully, the anti-VAX movement might have had far less momentum. It also would have taught the general population to think, scientifically about issues that are extraordinarily complex. I know many people, highly educated, and successful in their fields, in engineering and science, who demonstrate none of this facility, with even the rudiments of vaccinology precisely because of poor and I would even say derelict science communication at the highest levels of the government which, under different circumstances, may have led us to depopulation.
Polio hasn't had antivaxxer problems because the disease is easily visualized in terms of paralyzed children. If covid had come with symptoms like painful pustules, or bleeding from the eyes and ears, or produced sterility, there would have been little antivaxxer problems. The emotions dominated over the science, and people died out of sight in hospitals with covid.
They still have misinformation being spread in Pakistan, where they still have polio cases.
Unfortunately, the covid antivaxxer situation is now going to make the polio antivaxxer situation viable because of the rising popularity of being against all vaccines

If I brought my sick child to hospital, would it be possible for the doctors to order a test to see if they had active polio infection?
Would they be able to check for antibodies from a previous infection? And can they distinguish such antibodies from the actual polio infection vs from the childhood vaccination?
Every child should be vaccinated against polio. It's a horrific disease.
Polio titers can be drawn to see of antibodies exist from vaccination or a previous exposure to the disease.
A blood test, PCR, or active culture of body fluids can detect the case in a diseased person.

Vax hesitants and deniers fail to appreciate that all medicine works on a cost/benefit analysis. That is, what is the cost of treating (not necessarily expressed as a monetary value) vs what is the potential benefit. For example, is the cost of treating broken arms in a population more or less than the cumulative benefit of doing so? Clearly the cost is low and the benefit very high so it's a win. One has to ask the same question for vaccines. In the case of covid , is the estimated 1.3M persons in the US alone who did *not* die because of the vax more beneficial than the number who are vax injured? It's a brutal calculus, but necessary to determine if the vax is desirable.
It's typically referred to Risk vs Reward/benefit not cost though I see how you could say that though it's not as clear IMHO

you first give IPV and after some time you give OPV.
this is the way it is done in Israel and the first IPV shot prevents the rare cases of infection by OPV.
this has the benefit of not only immunizing the child but also prevents him from spreading the virus.
eradication of the polio virus is possible, as we did it to 2 of the 3 types of polio virus.
I watched until the end. sorry but he is mistaken. we don't need to see sick people to know if there is Polio in the population. sewerage surveillance does it for us.
and you can see that in most countries that do this surveillance there is no polio viruses in the sewerage. again polio eradication is possible and has already been done in most of the world.
also even those who were vaccinated only with IPV have reduced time in which they spread the virus compared to the unvaccinated.

Interesting conversation. Whilst science communication could be better, I certainly don't think that we can "blame" (and I use that word very lightly for lack of a better one right now) genuine scientists for not doing more to counter misinformation. Most of the time a lot of people are engaged in scientific work and mostly not many people care. It doesn't make the news. If your doctor prescribes a drug for a condition a lot of people take it, without understanding the scientific principles and research that went into that drug being available in the market. A number of the people spreading misinformation are making money out of it and/or are funded by groups to do so (I'm thinking more of funding for, say, climate denialism here). So expecting an honest scientist to go about their work and then make extra sacrifice in the rest of their life to counter BS produced by grifters and propagandists is a big ask. It is great that people such as Dan and Vincent do put that extra effort in, but it is a big ask of people. I am grateful their are those who do it. Not just debunking; it's really good to just listen to enthusiastic people explaining their field. Hmm rambling a bit now, perhaps, but just looked up en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simonyi_Professor_for_the_Public_Understanding_of_Science more of this would be good. iirc there used to be a maths based quiz hosted by Marcus on BBC4, but less of that now. I'd like to see more science stuff within main "entertainment" channels (I'm old enough the remember shows such as: Tomorrow's World, Equinox and Horizon on terrestrial UK channels). I don't know if : there are less, I'm falling into the "things were better when I were younger" :0) or as the effect of more online content means mainstream stuff congeals around a more generic entertainment blob, leaving niche interests to online. I am not convinced that there isn't an interest amongst the public at large for well presented science based programming. Meh.. I'll leave it at that :0)

An additional 9k children develops MIS-C which is very severe complication of COVID that puts 80% in ICU . Close to 1300 passed away . In MSM the message in early 2021 was that vax stopped transmission. This error still has repercussions now & has led to distrust in science.
That’s what the evidence showed. Only those who still don’t understand the basics - that different variants have different transmissibility - have decided that they now distrust science.

Sorry but I have to disagree with some of what was said here. I'm not sure about the US but in the UK polio was not circulating. Otherwise why was such a big fuss made when it was discovered in London sewage. It was believed to have been imported by a vaccinated individual from Africa. Also some vaccines are very effective at preventing an infection. By this I mean, if a person is exposed to the virus, the immune system deals with it before symptoms appear and they become infectious. The measles vaccine for example does this very well. In fact we could probably eradicate measles if it wasn't for the idiotic antivaxxers. Also why bother vaccinating boys with rubella and hpv vaccines if they don't prevent transmission? The covid vaccines aren't perfect and we should be looking for improved versions. It appears that vaccination against covid is not effective in preventing long covid.

Here in the U.K. all polio vaccines are injected as part of the scheduled vaccination programme. However, in the event of an outbreak then the OPV is used as it is quicker to distribute.

Immunotherapy seems to be promising in controlling and putting cancers into remission and possible reversal. Immunotherapy via vaccine administration seems safer and more effective than radiation therapy, chemo and surgery all which are riskier than Immunotherapy up to date in addition to maintaining good diet, plant based nutrition, life style changes and more. I don't see why any sensible person would object to Immunotherapy
Hopefully mRNA for cancers will be a game changer.
Silly question probably, but is the paralysis following OPV different to that caused by primary infection? Are there different levels of CNS involvement resulting in different levels of paralysis? How do you differentiate between autoimmune Guillain Barre syndrome or transverse myelitis and polio?
