Making a Wooden Lipless Crankbait, High Speed trolling Lipless Crankbait

- I wanted to test my lipless crankbait design criteria to see if it would hold up to being scaled up to a much larger size. In this video I make a wooded lure that is 6 inches long and is designed to be a high speed trolling lipless lure. Then I take it out to the lake to get some underwater action footage.

Great job! Thanks for the movie.
I love this too, but I must admit that I am eagerly awaiting Rowboat Conversion #8!
coming soon
Well conceived engineered design + great stability while trolling + very nice color/flash = WINNER !!!
Glad you like it!
Great job Franco ,this is the most beautiful lure had You make I thing... I Will really fishing in Kino bay México whit these amazing bait. Congratulation buddy!!!
Thank you very much.
Awesome work! The paint scheme kinda reminds me of a chum salmon.
That looks great!
Thanks.
Im no engineer by no means, but you explain this for a normal man lile me to understand. I Appreciate your generosity for sharing the knowledge with us. Fantastic work! Keep the man glitter flying.
I appreciate that!
So nice lure! Congrat!
Thanks!
Τhank you so much for the well made videos, the tons of generous advice, and most of all for the kind heart you expose! We learn a lot and deeply appreciate your work. Greetings from a fellow angler in Greece.
Wow, thank you!
Fantastic work!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow!!!! Good job!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent work!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome job.
Thanks
Turned out great. That erratic flash is killer.
Thanks, I think so too.
Nice looking lure there
Thanks 👍
@@EngineeredAngler like always very informative and interesting info and helps me think about new ways and ideas thank you
Thanks for your useful technical tips! They're the base of my channel which is growing great also because of you! I learned so much by your work!
I'm repetitive and I often comment your videos, but I'm so grateful for your knowledge sharing!
Thanks!
Great to hear!
Nice looking bait, really like the paint job! Thanks for sharing with us mere mortals! You're right, those eyes really did bring it all together, great choice.
Thanks for watching!
Might be my favorite one you made so far. You nailed it!
Thanks!
How about you version of a Pogo Shad? Basically your version of a lipless crank bait with a tail to give it added action!
That is a killer bait! My favorite one of yours so far.
Thank you so much.
Can’t wait to see the vid in the gulf with that lure🤙
Coming soon! I hope...
That came out sweet🤙🥃
Thank you.
Hi, Awesome design and the lure action is nice keeping it very stable.....thanks for sharing.....saludos
Thanks for watching!
Always learn something from watching thanks .
Glad to hear it, thanks.
Hi Franco, since I found your channel I've started trying my hand at lure making.
It keeps my head from exploding during lockdown. Loving the design and build stuff in wood. Thanks to you bud, my amazon bill has gone skywards !
😆👍 Best Wishes from Wigan UK
Thank you and stay safe...
That's awesome 😎😎😎
Thanks.
Franko, looks like a great Wahoo lure. Would please make the same lure out of clear poly carbonate aka Lexan? Jim Rodgers
I like that idea
Perfect👍👍👍
Thanks.
Definitely going to try making this one!
You should!
Hello Franco
Love the new video but I have some questions.
If you are going to use this lure where it is going to get damaged and you are going to make more replacements
Why don’t you make a mold use the 2 part epoxy resin with the micro balloons, once you figure out what you need you can quickly make more.
Also, isn’t that material tougher than pvc trim?
Also, you can color the resin so you don’t have to paint it, you could probably add some glitter for shine
Anyway, keep the videos coming I look forward to them every week
Great job lots of flash!, . Your channel inspired me to make some knock off Nakima T60 flatfish from red ceder for king salmon. Where I live we are under covid stay at home order so making lures is my mental therapy thanks for the inspiration! I only fish the HOMES (Huron,Ontario, Michigan,Erie and Lake Superior ) The Gulf of Mexico sounds amazing.
I don't know...I think your fishing grounds are pretty epic. Cheers and thanks.
Great design and build. Have you thought of a goby design. They have invaded Lake Michigan and surrounding streams. They are now in the food chain so I would think they would be a good bait fish design. They look a little like a sculpin and came into the Great Lakes from Russian cargo ships dumping ballast.
Love your builds. Thanks
Yes they look like saltwater bleny or goat fish haven't done one though.
Man that thing is beautiful! I attempt to make musky lures up here in Michigan and a novice at best. That would be killer up here. I might have to try to make something like that! Great work, video and information as always. Love the channel!
Thank you so much.
Excellent inspiring video as always Franco 👍
Thanks a million!
Nicely done 😌 I must have missed that video somehow 🤔 turned out great - any fish caught while trolling it ??
Haven't had a good trolling day...too much grass in the water.
Beautiful lure.
I had to start this hobby because of you and people like you.
I just designed 2 lures with 3d program and produced on 3d printer with PLA material.
But I couldn't catch the action as I wanted.
So I designed new versions. Now I m waiting for prototypes.
I will produce the lures with epoxi if I success.
Can you give me advise if I send the drawings ?
Keep it up....
Tebrikler.
Gayet başarılı...
teşekkür ederim
I would buy them
Dip coatings are more practical. Epoxy turns yellow and leaves an un aesthetic mark on the bait lip.
Which one do you consider as the final coating?
Standard epoxy + hardener
Allumi UV resin
KBS clear diamond finish
Solmaster lv 1 uistinlakka
Accel Urethane lr+
Accel Cellulose Cement
Nagashima Cellulose Clear
real cool lure👍 hope you make a fishing vids with this, really curious what kind of species will it get. by the way i try to make your previous lipless crank bait and it works like a charm👍 thank you for the tutorial on that🙏
Wow, that is so satisfying for me to hear...hope you catch a big one with it!
@@EngineeredAngler hope so😁
Spot on video Franco 👍 bit of everything in there, the lure turned out great, how come the head kept it's shine even after a top coat?
Even after the clear coat you keep some pretty good flash...that's why I keep using it. Thanks.
Good morning! Awakened to a new vid. Coffee, expand the video full screen and a nice watch. The action is really very good as you said. Thanks.
What wood did you use?
Glad you enjoyed it! I used more of the camphor I have laying around the shop.
Great job! I really like your approach to luremaking. Do you think this could be made even bigger and maybe have a spinner blade added at the back of it (kind of like the Molix Spin Shad)? Think this might be a great choice for pike in pelagic waters as well.
Possibly! Let me know if you try it...and it works.
21:12 lol as I'm holding my phone I realize my left thumbnail is also painted black.😁👍
The action if this lure looks great. Is the fin just for decoration or is it an integral design feature?
The fin on the bottom does nothing but look cool...When you put one on top it can really change the action.
nice work, good explanation, i have a question, does this principle of 15% more weight work on every density of wood or are there some variables on the different types of wood
It works pretty well on low density wood like camphor and cedar, but it's an estimate intended to make sure the lure is heavy enough to sink. If your trying to achieve a more refined sink rate, you'll need a more accurate method. And you apply the 15% to the calculated weight, to be added, not to the total weight, in case I didn't make that clear in the video. Thank you.
Loved it! One question: have you tried the black clips on the end of the line? They are flat black and won't distract from the lure.
Yes...I have the black ones as well. Thank you for watching.
I would think you would make up some type of camera mount
that attaches to the boat and a pole with a string on it pulling the Luers
leaves you free to steer the boat
But excellent job for what we have as I said before I would buy them I’ll give you $100 each
The boat I'm using is a loaner...My boat "Alumina" is due to be put back in the water very soon. I'll make a rig for better underwater vids soon. Thanks you and cheers.
Yup, I’m more confused about the weighting. Curious my you don’t melt lead? Maybe the obvious health risks/fumes etc. Beautiful bait and great timing as I am mid build on something similar.
You're right...I have a small space and lead fumes are really bad for you. Also, how would one weight out and exact amount of l molten lead? Good question though...probably lots of folks wondering the same thing. Cheers.
@@EngineeredAngler I’ve been using round split shots for bait building myself and had been contemplating getting a lead pot but concerned regarding fumes and can’t seem to justify the spend when splitshots work well enough thus far. Good to see a veteran builder like you doing it this way.
Hi Franco. I have decided to make some 6 ins Plugs from a convenient broom handle and wanting them to be Pilchard/Sardine shaped and weighing about 60 grms for catching saltwater Bass here in the UK. I have taken lots of your advice and shaped down some already. My real Query is, if I make a Top Water lure should it float level and if I make a Sub Surface Lure should it sit tail down ??? I want to Walk the Dog with both types. I have large split shot to achieve the balance I require. I really enjoy your videos and would really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance. Hartley Pascoe
The short answer is that moving the weight back on your lure will usually results in easier walk-the-dog action. But I suggest you watch this video for a better understanding.

@@EngineeredAngler Many thanks for your quick reply, that video didn't quite hit the spot but it triggered my memory and I found another of your videos entitled @ Topwater Lure Design' which did hit the spot. Many thanks, Hartley.
Franco I need help figuring out why my lures after correcting the lip and adding more weight. Why they still swim on their side and not upright
Watched this when originally created... And again today... Wondering if you caught anything with it since you said that you were going to troll it...?
Yes...I caught four big pickerel in a row in one troll. Haven't taken it to salt water yet.
Is the "popsicle" anal fin needed for stability or is it more ornamental? Have you found a relationship between the length and the required maximum width? Any important relationship between where the line tie is located and the location of the forward hook?
Great looking lure. Would be a killer fishing among rock piles for striped bass.
The anal fin is just for looks on this one...the ratio of length to thickness is so dependent on the shape that it's hard to say what is optimal. I like to keep it around 8-9 to 1 (length : thickness) with an absolute minimum thickness of 3/16 inch. Thanks for watching,
Hate to ask as you must have done a video. How and what do you recommend for clear coating, finishing. What brush, for no brush marks? Thank you for your help
I have done a bunch of videos on clear coating. Here's the link to the playlist

@@EngineeredAngler thank you. Love your page, thank you again.
That is a Beautiful Bait....do u sell any u make ...would love to have one like that...
No, sorry. But thanks for asking.
What airbrush you using?
Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/jrU4JaL7GZs/w-d-xo.html
What brand of air brush paint do you recommend?
I like Testers and Badger brands for value. Golden is super good but a bit pricey.
You have very interested shows. I enjoy very much.
I would eat that 😋
I’d give you $100 each if you can cast them out of Rezin and full wire through with a rattle same paint job
10 of them of $1000
That's a nice offer...going to have to wait until I retire😎😁
It is moving amazing, do you have Instagram that we can follow ??? Thank
