Good video. I learned some things. A topic I would be interested in hearing about is the process of doing a border run to Cambodia. (I've heard tidbits, don't fully understand). Thanks.
Great information guys. My friend wants me to move here. I just explained some of the process to her. They seem to make it very difficult. I helped someone get their permanent residence in America. It was much easier than Thailand process. I may have to just continue to visit.
@@davedaniels4967 I’ve learned it so it’s not a major issue. If you don’t speak English, getting American residency means you have to have much more reliance on family or cultural connections and they have to be seriously strong, usually religious and such.

Tim, I'm surprised to hear that you haven't learned Thai after many years. I'm curious why. Was it too difficult, or did you not need to? I'm asking because I'm hoping to retire to Thailand, learn the language, and meld in with locals. Is that not a reasonable expectation? Am I just going to be banging my head against a wall trying to learn Thai?

How long can foreigners leave Thailand per year and still be eligible for permanent residency? What about naturalization? Would the foreigner have to stay in Thailand for 8 years nonstop to become a citizen? I hope not. For example, could a foreigner travel for a few months a year and still be granted PR in about 3 years?
they can get a sponsored work permit.. Companies like shelter etc who are registered under BOI and who will employ you and pay your taxes and social costs etc or you can form a Thai company, 2 mil paid up capital, employ 4 thais, get a registered office, pay yourself min wage for your country of origin and get a B Visa and work permit yourself.
@@SeftonHanley There's really not such a thing as a "sponsored work permit", at least not in Thai legalese as far as I am aware. There's the "normal" work permit that one obtains when working for a company in Thailand, with the normal privileges & obligations (e.g. insurance & taxes). At the moment there's no such thing as a digital nomad visa, but there's been some talks on this issue, but it seems the visa will not be easy to get, probably many hurdles to be approved. Perhaps the best way to stay long term in Thailand when under 50 years old and when not wanting to be married (visa based on marriage) or take care of a Thai child (dependent visa), one can get the Thailand Elite visa. But officially it's not allowed to perform work on any of these visas as far as I know.
Should clarify that the process of tax paying / work permit then precludes successful application for any of us retired and or married here no matter the length of stay.
@@anthony7091 in actual fact there is no 'requirement' in the legislation to have the 3 years work history, as you say under humanitarian case etc.. But I am informed by people who have done it and legal advisors who assist others that you simply never will be accepted without those 3 years (maybe some celebrity reason or other 'gifted' case / connected benefactor).. Foreign lawyers are are not allowed to practice law in Thailand. Law is a one of the prohibited occupations in the royal decree. They can only be advisors to law firms. Often the excuse to get a WP is that they need to advise on foreign law for Thai clients investing or moving overseas.
No mention of the 'purchased' PR systems for the wealthy which seem to override the rest of the points based system. 40m investment (now I read via BOI) can attain PR, I used to know a PR holder who couldnt speak a word of Thai who came that way with 40m invested in an accepted investment category. I m not even sure what happened to the old 10m investment visa category going to PR after 3 years ??
However, it's not cheap; A non-refundable fee for each application is 7,600 baht, and If the application is approved, the fee for the PR is 191,400 baht.
He is embarrassed, it should be around 10k baht. They want to charge a lot more. It was 5,000 baht for me to get Thai citizenship. It wasn't hard yet lawyers wanted 100k baht just for getting a few documents together!
