  • History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 22: Rick Rock is a legendary producer whose extensive credits include some of the greatest rappers of all time. He's made hits for 2pac, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, E-40, Busta Rhymes, Redman, Method Man, Angie Martinez, Spice 1, RBL Posse, Mystikal, Marvaless, and so many more. From his humble beginnings in Alabama, he relocated to the Bay Area after passing a beat to Oakland's Conscious Daughters. That led him moving in with legendary producer Mike Mosely and many amazing opportunities that Rick describes as a dream come true. He was a member of the group Cosmic Slop Shop along with Doonie Baby and Big Lurch, and later went on to co-found the Fairfield group the Federation. As the in-house producer for the Federation, Rick single-handedly created the sound that would spark the hyphy movement. In this interview, he breaks down his approach to creativity, the music business, and the stories behind some of his greatest hits.

      I will 1st admit that I am jumping to conclusions but I ask you what do you consider a legend of your Bay? What is your definition if he is mainstream and he aint never been on his own to know what it's like to have experience of a king to his own cave if he caved? I always hear people always putting some corporate company man who didn't even own the company always as someone to represent someone who they are and that person is not like you at all. Because I am pretty sure that's how I came to this page and it was recommended to me because I run in the independent underground circuit that's why you don't even know who I am because that's real.😂❤🔗

    I was born in 92 from Tracy, ca. been slappin bay area music as long as i can remember. To hear all the stories of the OGs i grew up listening bumpin is so dope. But to hear the rick rock credentials and stories out loud is too dope. Never knew about his early career, even though i was still unknowingly bumpin his early work

    I went to high-school with Big Lurch and lived across the hall from him in Garland Texas. He was cool as a fan didn't even talk much. We use to rap after school he just watched! I didn't know he could rap until after school I heard he moved to the Bay and a tape started going around the neighborhood with him rapping on it. Looked up and he was on BET! Then we heard about what happened. Damn!

    It's like all my dreams get crushed because every time I think someone is independent they tell me another way that they rode the educational system or some linear lineage that mainstream is and is the total opposite of grass roots independent and totally green. It's like the older I get the more sick I feel. 😂❤

Im from the V so im up on all the shit A-1 from Day 1. The Country Club is was and always be my stompin grounds though but Fairfield and all that had them good ass aftershocks that put shit to the point where you knew your roots was well grounded , nothin but good vibrations csme from all of it. What is the "Detroit" sound that people keep saying the Bay got from them? The only thing from their OGs from the 90s sound like them copying the West sounds and if you listen to them from the 00s they sound like they copying the South.

    • @timothymaxheaux
      @timothymaxheaux 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They use the same synth bass thats in heavy rotation in Sac Artist right now. Detriot is more uptempo rapid piano keys. But its they same sounds used. You can load up a beat machine with the drum sounds, synths, keys, bells and you can make either a Nor Cal Beat or speed up the tempo and make a detroit beat. Thats the long version explanation. short version is they use all the same sounds lol

    Being born in San Francisco and moving to Fairfield at a very early age being an 80s baby all bay artists were heros in the game. But being from the Flatz 707 Mike Mosely, Sam Bostic and Rick Rock are above all to me. They from my little ass town. I said all that to say this.. I was really looking forward to hearing his story and was excited about this episode. BUT HE HEAVILY DISAPPOINTED ME. THIS WAS WACK AS FUCK. WHY THEY LET HIM GET ON HERE LIKE THIS. I TRIED TO WATCH IT BUT IT WAS TOO IRRITATING. Im such a fan of this guy I Bought El Dorado Red East Side Rydah Album because it was Rick Rock Label. Fairfields own. SO DONT SAY IM HATING. IM JUST LET DOWN. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE BEST EPISODE EVER. IM UPSET. THEY SHOULD HAVE NOT PUT THIS OUT AND BROUGHT HIM BACK SOBER SO WE CAN ACTUALLY HEAR THIS HISTORY WITHOUT THE DRUNKEN BULLSHIT
