I hate how the 'expert' threw in the autistic bit because I know how people will make that casual association in future when some crime happens and the perpetrator shows no conscience (more than before, which is already too much). Yes, one marker within autism (it was one of the markers in Aspergers, which I got diagnosed with a decade and a bit ago before they got rid of the term and put it all within autism) is a lack of demonstrated empathy. Note the word ''demonstrated''. I can feel fine. I'm law-abiding and I have morals. I have empathy. The difference is that I tend not to try to fake it in the way neurotypical people might. I tend to keep my emotions and deeper thinking for when I'm alone whereas being amongst people always makes me feel slightly anxious and ill at ease. I've never listened to someone's tale of woe which I have no experience of and said things like ''I know exactly how you feel'' or ''you were so right to do that'' unless I've actually felt empathy (rather than sympathy) because I'd feel disingenuous pretending to know how they feel. So it's not so much a lack of empathy with myself. It's more an aversion to group dynamics and all the fakery that goes along with it (of which there is a lot). It certainly doesn't mean I can do horrible things, not feel guilty about it, and then calmly inform the police where the bodies are when they come to arrest me. You'd think a psychologist might spend a second making that sort of distinction and giving some thought to autistic people listening to him. They already get enough undue suspicion and derision thrown their way.
On second thoughts, why are we listening to the diagnosis of a stranger who has never even spoken to the person he's diagnosing? Isn't it enough to simply say ''she behaved very strangely during her arrest and I expect psychologists may diagnose her with some condition in future investigations during the course of her coming trial'' without having to speculate so much on that as to attempt the diagnosis from a distance? I'd have thought actually communicating with the patient comes before diagnosis usually?
