This is just a quick little video talking about my current favourite sketchbooks. I hope you don't mind the simplicity of it. One thing I wanted to mention about the Strathmore vision is that it's not the most durable paper for watercolour but it works ok, and graphite has been smudging between pages (as most sketchbooks do). Just wanted to point that out 😊 the vision series has a watercolour sketchbook too so I definitely want to test that.
JelArts hi I have a good sketch book recommendation I don't know the name but theirs a pocket on the front to you can slide things in and out and it's roughly the same size that you like . Also it's only like 2.79 $ ! You should check it out I found mine at Walmart
@@JelArts really? cause ive just started and i cant draw big at all but a book i was reading on sketching said when youre a beginner you should draw as big as possible,so you can see your errors and use your arm more or something?
Ciara Walsh I’m no expert but I would not recommend that. That’s sounds really discouraging and intimidating! I can barely start an illustration in my 8 by 11 sketchbook. There’s a lot of pressure in a blank page. Though I think it’s important to recognize your mistakes, when you’re a beginner that sounds really discouraging. Once you start off, you are going to make *so many* mistakes. For me, seeing me make things that I like in my art was really what kept me going as an artist. I don’t think it would hurt to do that every once in a while but not as an entire sketchbook. Again, take this with a side of salt because this is just the opinion of a pretty average artist.
@@ciareenie You really should work big. It may be intimidating but its better for you. Drawing in small sizes lets you get away with very limited drawings that may contain mistakes. Even in art schools the recommended sketchbook size is a3, in life drawing you work on pages almost as big as the easel so you Can comfortably fit both the Big shapes and details.
I have this dilemma where I LOVE the paper of the Canson XL Mix Media but I love the presentation of a more traditional-bound sketchbook, with a plain black cover. Does anyone know of a book-bound sketchbook with paper that behaves like the Canson XL? Please???
Ashley Is Artsy i mean you could always paint it, I did that with one of them (I have a lot of those) and it was alright. It fell apart after a while because of the spiral though
This is a month late comment, but Strathmore has hardbound mixed media sketchbook that I like: www.amazon.com/Strathmore-Mixed-Media-Journal-11-Inch/dp/B008HTCZYA Stillmin and Birn also has a variety of high quality bound sketchbooks for mixed media and watercolor: www.amazon.com/dp/B00BW5FLN8/ref=sspa_dk_detail_7?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B00BW5FLN8&pd_rd_wg=READP&pd_rd_r=75V1SSE3MRJ7B0TR4RYZ&pd_rd_w=svjq1&smid=A1Y3PCPH3CY53X
you could just take the pages out and make yourself a sketchbook with whatever cover you want thats what i do with pretty hardback books from charity shops
Totally agree with the Canson, they do not feel cheap at all. I think I got mine for $4-7 at my local Walmart. So my sketchbook journey has been, I’ve hated just about every sketchbook that I’ve owned until my current one which is a Blick Sketchbook. I love it to bits; it’s not too thick or too thin and it takes my Copics nicely. And I hate rough paper so I’m glad it’s smooth lol, I use mechanical pencils so I’m a bit incompatible. I do have colored pencils though so maybe one day but I still don’t like the look or feel of rough paper besides with watercolor.
I always keep a little leather pocket sized sketchbook in my pocket with a pen an pencil so I can sketch and write Ideas down for future projects. I really like the leather cover cause I customized it snd it looks really cool. You can just use acrylics and glue stuff on the cover to customize it
The sketchbook I’m currently using is the Holbein Multimedia! It’s SO good and it handles watercolor extremely well. I definitely recommend it as well as the Canson XL Mix Media!
キャンソンのスケッチブック試してみたい。I really want to try the canson sketchbook, the only sketchbook i tried and liked are moleskine and maruman. -not picky tho- also looking for a sketchbook that could work with acrylic/oil.
There is one TH-camr, that uses Gesso and then primes it a bit so the oil has something to bind on :) Maybe try it like that? She says that the oil doesn´t go through the page with this method :)
Hello, you may have already seen this but usually Canson sketchbooks/pads tend to be cheaper :) They also come with paper with many varieties. I know a few people who use Gesso, so you could try that also.
If you want a sketch book where anything you use, and I mean ANYTHING, wont bleed through Crescent Rendr sketchbooks are incredible for that. I will say though the paper is a little weird and so it doesn't work super well with watercolor, but if you want to use both sides of the paper you can. They also are pretty cheep.
the canson mixed media sketchbooks are a little on the pricey side on the UK amazon, but I'd love to try them one day. my current faves are the pink pig sketchbooks. I've got one at 150gsm which is great with pencil, watercolour and ink, alcohol markers are a bit risky without scrap paper protecting the next page though. I also have one of their watercolour sketchbooks at 270gsm which is great with gouache so I'm guessing acrylic would work well too.
Since I started drawing (2015) I didn't know a thing about sketchbooks and I've just used to draw on print paper lmao Then last year I started using sketchbooks (with really thin paper) and then this year I got to know more about sketchbooks and drawing in general got really interested in watercolors and now I made my own watercolor sketchbook 🖤 And btw the mix media one looks interesting but in my country everything is expensive so I will save some coins and I'll try it 👀
If anyone lives in the UK go to The Works! you can get a5 & a4 softcover sketchbooks for £1 and they have larger ones and hardcover ones as well. The prices vary but I think the most expensive one is £3 which is what I have & it works well with watercolour and acrylic paint and acrylic ink as well as dry mediums.
Uh I love the Mixed media from Canson too! It's amazing, but sadly pretty pricey on the german amazon :D What I also really like is the strathmore toned tan paper :) YOu can see color pencil drawings so amazing on them!
Shiroichi Art Jupp, found one on German Amazon for 9€ inc. Shipping. Used the Black covered, spiral Bound Version for a 30 day challenge in September. Actually I sketch Landscape in the classic bound Version. You can get them in German Shops for 8€ a DIN A 4 98 sheets, 100g/m^2 /67lb Sketchbook.
I've tried different sketchbook, but my favorite one so far has to be this one sketchbook from walmart, it's a Daler Rowney simply, a book bind one. It isn't very good for watercolor (but that hasn't stopped me), color pencils are pretty good, I haven't tested out markers besides sharpies, and it works fine with pencils obviously. It's pretty cheap, only costing me five dollars. It's not the best but I do seem to enjoy it.
The sketchbook at 6:59, I have the same design (3of them) except its a little bigger and the colors are dark blue, light blue, and brown. I found them at Ross. They're my favorite types.
My favorite sketchbook is the canson mix media for paint and collage and the studio black hardcover for dry media, those ones are 4$ at most Dollaramas
I always use the moleskin watercolour sketchbook and i loove it so much. I love to draw on more like...a rough texture. And i always draw with watercolours so this is perfect to me. It even has a little bag on the last side of it where i always keep my color-sheets of supplies i use so i can take it everywhere. Since it‘s just fits me perfectly it‘s worth the price for me 😄
no it's not yellowish c: (maybe yours is really not meant for sketching, more like a journal or something?) i also have a big mixed media sketchbook from Canson, i would say the paper colour is the same at least i never noticed a difference xD
Strathmore vision is my favourite so far. Right now I'm on my second one of them. I also find they hold water colour better then the Canson XL mixed media.
I have a straffmore vision, and im not very fond of it. I really like the custom cover, but the paper doesnt work well for watercolor, it does a weird imprint/buckle when i try to paint on it. The paper is also smoother then i like. I wouldnt recomemed it for watercolor
Nina Mcgill That's interesting! The pages buckle for me but not too badly. I tend to go lightly with watercolour in sketchbooks though, so maybe that's why. One thing I forgot to mention was that graphite seems to smudge fairly easily between pages. Not sure if the same thing goes for the Canson one though.
I also recommend the Canson XL Mix Media but if you use markers if you press too hard it will in off on the next page and are almost always guaranteed to bleed into the back of the page
My favorite by far is the Canson mixed media, I find it works really well with blending pencils and markers which are the mediums I use the most. I really don't use watercolor or acrylic that often, but when i do i usually use proper canvases.
The video is really super helpful and I think I really need to change from my current sketchbooks to something else since I feel more and more uncomfortable with them but now I know many other opportunities for sketches and that's great! :D
My favorite sketchbooks are the moleskin sketchbooks! The paper is so smooth, takes markers really well. The book you are holding isn't three sketchbook, the paper is much thicker and the cover is black
I currently have the Art Alternatives 9x11 sketchbook and i like it pretty well. It has a hard cover, which is nice but it bleeds with markers and the paper is a little less thick than I like. It holds up pretty well with watercolors and dry media so no complaints there!
I mostly get like spiral sketchbooks and their pretty fine, I have on big one from school a while ago that I barely used so I ditched my sketchbook that I have now to use it. It’s pretty nice if u ask me, it’s big with a plastic cover, but it’s a nice hard plastic and it’s for like $5 so yeah
Jel I am an artist and you inspired me to make art tutorials too! I hope the art community can benefit and learn from my videos like how you inspired others! Love Destiny ❤️❤️
As a mix media artist the canson XL mix media paper is great! But my favorite for mix media is actually moleskine watercolor sketchbooks! It's more or less all I ever use!
I have the Canson Mixed Media 5.5 x 8.5 sketchbook. I got it for $5, it’s pages are 98 lb and if has 60 pages which is perfect because the amount of pages arent too much and they arent too little. Its a really great sketchbook and I really recommend it 👍
The pound and grams rating in the weight of the paper. 98 lb means 500 sheets of the papers "unit size" which can vary between different manufacturers weighs 98 lbs. The GSM rating stands for the weight of one square meter of the paper in grams and is a more precise way of knowing a paper's quality. Multi media paper is usually thicker than standard sketch and has a more water resistant sizing (the starch like substance that hold paper together).
I think I'll just wish myself one of these ring-sketchbooks for Christmas. A really tiny one that I can carry anywhere. Thanks for your opinion and the video! :) I would love to see more painting like the paradise bird though ^^
Great video... I love videos about sketchbooks :D I'm also using my first Canson Mix Media Sketchbook at the moment... I'm like 2/3 through and it feels like it keeps filling itself! I never experienced that with another sketchbook. I used to be super into Leuchtturm, but these really don't work with watercolor. I like the watercolor sketchbooks from Moleskine though - nice texture :)
Hi JelArts, if you want a great sketchbook try Stillman & Birn, they have a whole series on different types of paper and they come in hardback and soft covers and they lay flat so you can do a two page sketch. You can find them on Amazon. These sketchbooks will take your art to a higher level! Try them you won’t be sorry! You are a fine artist so good luck!
I bought a sketch book from Heritz for 8 Euro. It works well with copics. I also bought one no name sketchbook 4 times, simply because it has over 100 usable pages and it costs about 3,50 Euro in Hema (a store that exist in Germany, the Netherlands etc.). But since the paper is rather thin I'd recommend not layering too much with copis or only using it for pen/ink sketches. Both are hardcover books.
Mix media sketchbooks are the best! I’m using the canson xl I would like other options though I saw one on amazon that is also canson mix media but with ticker paper I might try that one next since mine is almost done 😬
My favorite sketchbook is called artists loft because it's really good and i like how the paper is not to hard or too thin and i like that it has a hard cover but the only thing I don't like is that i can't turn it other than that i like it and the cover is really pretty it's a painting of a tree with different colors and its really nice and heavy cause it has a lot of papers to draw
I tend to love books with thinner paper, but that's probably because I work almost exclusively in graphite when I sketch. For a while in high school lined paper was actually my favourite because the pencil smudged less on it than in the sketchbook I was using, haha.
I think my favourite sketchbook is the premiere by nicole. It's about $5 USD, and it's really good for the price imo. Markers tend to bleed a little, and it can hold watercolour okay, but it does start to buckle after a few layers. Ink washes do fine, and other paints work well too. I think I just like it because it's cheap though haha
Hey so ik this is an old video but: I have a proper moleskin sketchbook and I don’t really like it. The paper is thick which is good but I think it’s too smooth for me. If you’re just sketching with pencil, it doesn’t stay to the paper. I had to stop drawing on both sides bc they would get blurred together. Not very good with water, but markers seem to be okay on it. I hope this helps.
I like the Moleskine art plus sketchbook. It has pretty thick, smooth pages, you must have gotten the normal Moleskine? Mine looks really good with markers. I got mine from Amazon
I just sent my mom for that exact mix media Canson sketchbook😂 I have a Canson sketch one but I plan to is watercolors and stuff with it because I’m trying to learn that stuff
i like the canson mixed media books, but during inktober i realized that i wanted mixed media paper that was smooth. so i did some research and ended up splurging on the Sillman and Bern Epsilon series which is so nice to draw on with color erase or pens. Theyre a bit on the expensive side if you prefer wire bound like i do, so I try and use it for more finished sketches. I may try out the strathmore version you have, since i use those recycled paper sketchbooks. I didnt realize that the not recycled one had whiter paper! if anyone knows of a cheaper option for mixed media that has smooth paper i'd love to know D: if you do a lot of watercolor in the mixed media book id recommend trying the canson watercolor xl pads instead, it's got more texture but it takes watercolor better. i use it for thumbnails n experiments n stuff
Hi Jelarts! You really inspire by everything you do! I am still pretty young and I'm not sure yet about if I want to be an artist or not. This was a really cool video and I give a big thumbs up! By the way, I was wondering if you play animal crossing pocket camp? I think you may have mentioned it before but I'm not sure. I love playing it so much! Thank for being here on TH-cam and a late congratulations for your 100k subscribers!( I'm proud to be one of them)
I really dont like the Carson mixed media it feels like it takes very little effort for my pages to come out. Not tear or rip mind you but just fall as I'm working on something. Though I tend to be a little rough and weird with my drawing positions. Love the paper and the possibilities it provides. So far im really enjoying this Premieré by Nicole sketchbook which i think is like 5 inx 8in but not sure. Has a hardcover and back much like a hard copy edition of a book with very light peddle - ish texture on its black surfce. I like that the inside of both cover and back are white so they kinda add an extra two pages. Its 5 Usd at my art store. Sadly i think ill need a gel pen or something to draw on the cover and make it look nice. I also have this Strathmore sketch pad ,with fine tooth paper thats 3.5 x 5 in that i adore because its so small and has 100 pages . It was around 1- 2 usd. Neither are mixed media but take ok punishment from my normal Mech pencil, color pencil and pens sketches. I also just bought a line paper notebook because it was 5.3 x 4 and a 1$. The paper is super thin but i miss drawing old school notebooks and the Cover was Green (my favorite color) And it says Little FAT Book in the corner leaving room for a Sumo guy or something on the front I love your channel!
Do you still think that the Canson XL Mix Media is still good? Because I heard that the pages fall out easily, even for those that don't do watercolor, even if you're gentle with it. I want to buy it for once but I'm not sure.
For graphite/ pencil drawings, would you recommend the Canson mixed media or the Strathmore vision mixed media? I’ve tried the canson one but would like to try the strathmore one b/c of the customizable cover but idk if the paper quality is the same?
I’ve been meaning to buy a new sketchbook haven’t In a really long time I’ve been just using loose leaf and it’s not as fun as having an actual sketchbook
i have the exact same 5.5 x 8.5 strathmore sketchbook, but whenever i shade with pencil it smudges against the opposite page really bad. does anybody else have this problem?
Yes, I do too! A lot of people seem to recommend adding a light wash of watercolour to stop it from smearing. You can also use spray fixative, or even stiff hairspray in a pinch.
i have a problem with the paper with the sketchbooks i buy. i think its that i erase too hard? idk but ill erase something i drew and the paper and the paper itself started coming off. im not sure if its the paper or just me
Is the strathmore vision sketchbook good for watercolor and marker? I found it at my local hobby lobby which I was so happy about but I want to get some more info about it

Ikrrr!!😆
i like the mixed media sketch books aswell.
I think I'll just wish myself one of these ring-sketchbooks for Christmas. A really tiny one that I can carry anywhere.
Thanks for your opinion and the video! :) I would love to see more painting like the paradise bird though ^^
LordCatzen I definitely want to do more speedpaints and such. I just have so much homework right now, heheh
the canson mixed media is about $50 where i live but is one of the few which holds watercolors
Rae Santos where I live, they are $6, what country you live in?!?!
Coco Loco i live in brazil, i think it can be a little less buying from amazon and other sites that ship worldwide
I for one really like the strathmore toned tan sketchbooks
I bought a sketch book from Heritz for 8 Euro. It works well with copics.
I also bought one no name sketchbook 4 times, simply because it has over 100 usable pages and it costs about 3,50 Euro in Hema (a store that exist in Germany, the Netherlands etc.). But since the paper is rather thin I'd recommend not layering
too much with copis or only using it for pen/ink sketches. Both are hardcover books.
The art lord has spoken
Mix media sketchbooks are the best! I’m using the canson xl I would like other options though I saw one on amazon that is also canson mix media but with ticker paper I might try that one next since mine is almost done 😬
You should do Sketchbook tour! 💞
Dokkyun_Heart Once I'm finished the sketchbook I'm working on I'll definitely film it!
Thank you!!! I've been looking for a sketchbook that I actually like.😂
You didn't show your art :( xx
Sophie Katchick There's small glimpses here and there, but not much, sorry!
Your very talented
Canson XL mixed media, and illo sketchbook are the best sketchbooks in my opinion.
I have the brown one too
i loved the vid JelArts!!
Where did you buy the mixed media for a good price
My front of my sketchbook is fabric, any advice to decorate?
Can you use markers in the mixed media ones
Hey so ik this is an old video but:
I have a proper moleskin sketchbook and I don’t really like it.
Reptarsaurus Oh same! Mine takes watercolors good, but its really thin for my prismacolor markers. They just bleed through :/
I just sent my mom for that exact mix media Canson sketchbook😂 I have a Canson sketch one but I plan to is watercolors and stuff with it because I’m trying to learn that stuff
i like the canson mixed media books, but during inktober i realized that i wanted mixed media paper that was smooth. so i did some research and ended up splurging on the Sillman and Bern Epsilon series which is so nice to draw on with color erase or pens.
Can the Canson XL Sketch work with watercolor?
The paper is super thin but i miss drawing old school notebooks and the Cover was Green (my favorite color)
And it says Little FAT Book in the corner leaving room for a Sumo guy or something on the front
I love your channel!
I want to get my hands on some good water colors
What is the best one for pencil ( no colors)?
I cri forever because the Canson Mix Media books are only available via Amazon for me and they cost nearly 20$ each.
Hi hows it going......JESSICA
+deadtrash Art HAHAA I forgot that was there 😂
Do you still think that the Canson XL Mix Media is still good? Because I heard that the pages fall out easily, even for those that don't do watercolor, even if you're gentle with it. I want to buy it for once but I'm not sure.
For graphite/ pencil drawings, would you recommend the Canson mixed media or the Strathmore vision mixed media? I’ve tried the canson one but would like to try the strathmore one b/c of the customizable cover but idk if the paper quality is the same?
I wouldn't buy any spiral notebooks, I like books with a flat spine.
Me too
And I really like your pfp if Tae
It depends for me. For bigger sketchbooks I prefer spiral, but for smaller ones I like book binding.
The blue one
Is canson good with alcohol based markers? If not which on do you recommend?
does anyone know if the paper in illo sketch books in smooth and thick? also does it work well with markers?
i use all different types of mixed media sketch books i have not found my fav one tho
I’ve been meaning to buy a new sketchbook haven’t In a really long time I’ve been just using loose leaf and it’s not as fun as having an actual sketchbook
I have a lot of mixed media sketchbooks that... I just haven't done anything with. like 4 or 5 cuz I keep hoarding them :D
i have the exact same 5.5 x 8.5 strathmore sketchbook, but whenever i shade with pencil it smudges against the opposite page really bad. does anybody else have this problem?
Yes, I do too! A lot of people seem to recommend adding a light wash of watercolour to stop it from smearing. You can also use spray fixative, or even stiff hairspray in a pinch.
i have that exact same sketch book right nowwww
i have a problem with the paper with the sketchbooks i buy. i think its that i erase too hard? idk but ill erase something i drew and the paper and the paper itself started coming off. im not sure if its the paper or just me
Ya! Jelarts uploaded a new vid :)
XL mixed-media SketchBook. I had the sketch but I had like two or three
I want to get a sketchbook on amazon but I’m nervous enough about ordering online
Anyway cool video your amazing artist!Stay hight level!
You have the same name as me!!!!! Yesssssss!
Is the strathmore vision sketchbook good for watercolor and marker? I found it at my local hobby lobby which I was so happy about but I want to get some more info about it
Try 'Elements of art (EL) ' it perfect!
You can get the Canson for a little cheaper with the 50% off coupon at Michael's
