I used to call it a lower back pain or buttock pain. I knew also about bursitis. Now I learned the new correct name of my problem is "sit bone pain". I have been having it for a few years. My remedy is only rest, walking, sitting on good cushioned chair, less use of hard chair, avoiding long time sitting, changing posture in about every half hour, rest with lying on soft bed, no use of any medicine, drinking normal and cold water help me a lot .
I am fit for almost all activities commensurate with my age.
Thanks for giving me additional knowledge.

I’ve been suffering from intense pain in this region for 3 years now. Before that I was a kayak racer and I’d train or race in the kayak 3-5 days a week for 2+ hours each, and on my bike 1-2 days a week for 3-4 hours each. The pain is so intense I had to retire as a computer programmer because I can’t sit at a computer for any length of time. I also can’t paddle or bike, or even ride in a car for more than about an hour. In the 3 years, I’ve had diagnoses of ischial bursitis, high hamstring tendonopathy, sciatica, demylenization of the sciatic nerve, and probably others I don’t recall. I’ve had corticosteroid injections in the sciatic nerve (high and low), the ischial bursa, the hamstring, and I’ve also had PRP. Nothing has given even temporary relief. One doctor recommended an ischial bursectomy but I can’t find a doctor who will do it. I’m basically stuck in bed most days. My life sucks and I wish it would end.

Me too. It has taken almost 3 years to even get a diagnosis as I was fobbed off with Fibromyalgia. I have tried physio, strength exercises, steroid injection, strong anti inflammatory drugs and I still cannot sit, stand for long or walk very far. Unable to work so I am basically stuck in my bedroom all day. Sometimes I wish I could just fall asleep and stay asleep as quality of life is poor. If I do too much I feel like I will pass out from the pain. It feels like my leg is being pulled off plus electric shocks down leg and all over my pelvis. I feel like a burden to my partner 😞

Sorry to hear that you are suffering. Me too have been in pain for almost 3 years. I have asked for help from more than 20 doctors, more than 20 MRIs, CTs, USs, and other tests. Have tried almost every treatment from pain (nerve) doctors. I even had a surgery to remove my posterior femoral cutaneous nerve. Hope we find relief.

Following a very difficult childbirth at age 20 (50 years ago) I have had intense burning in the deep perineal and anal area. In last 15 years, this has now localized to a large deep area surrounding anus, worse when sitting and especially when lying down. I cannot sit on hard surfaces or sit straight up, must lean forward to extend sitting time a little, or sit on one buttock.
To sleep I place a hot water bottle (frozen) between buttock cheeks; this continuous cold every night for many years has damaged the quality of the skin it touches and that skin appears fragile and of different texture but..no choice. The freezing cold seems to numb the deep burning enough that I can sleep.
I've had this MRI'd, checked out by urogynecologist...no answers. This has greatly affected my work and personal life.
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1989, and small fiber peripheral polyneuropathy last year.
      Any thoughts, doctor?

Grazie.

Quads extend knee and hamstrings flex knee. I dont understand the part you explained that hamstrings extend knee while they “bend the knee backwards”. Do I misunderstand what you meant?

Thank you Dr. Furlan. Always good ideas. I have pain on right side, that is worse when driving especially long trips. Many years ago I fell on the ice and bruised my bottom on that side. Could this injury be related? I do walk as much as possible to keep fit and stretch. I will try some more hamstring stretches.
